阅读下列内容,从每小题所给的ABCD四个选项中选出一个最佳答案。

Wetlands are any land that is flooded with shallow water all or most of the time. They are a natural water holding system.

There are many types of wetlands. Among them, bogs, marshes and swamps are the three main types. The different types of wetlands have different kinds of plants. Only mosses(苔藓)and a few other kinds of plants can grow in bogs. Grassy plants like cattails(香蒲)and reeds(芦苇)are the most common plants in a marsh. A swamp is a forest whose ground is underwater all or most of the time. Unlike bogs or marshes, a swamp is full of trees and bushes. It’s not a good idea to go exploring a swamp without a guide. There are hidden pools of water, thick mud, and sometimes big crocodiles(鳄鱼)looking for their next meal.

Hungry crocodiles aren’t the only animals that make the wetlands their home. Otters, turtles, frogs, snakes and many other animals do too. The water is home to many kinds of fish and crabs. Birds, including ducks, geese and cranes, use wetlands seasonally during their long migrations.

Wetlands are important because they provide habitats for plants and animals. A wetland system can also protect shorelines, make polluted waters clean, prevent floods, and restore underground water supplies.

According to WWF, more than half of the world’s wetlands have disappeared since the beginning of the 20th century. If this continues, countless plant and animal species will surely die out. Without wetlands, cities have to spend more money treating water. Don’t feel helpless. Try to do your part to protect them right now. Here are some ideas.

As Chinese, I’m sure you know something about Taichi. It’s a kind of sport and one of the symbols of Chinese culture.

Taichi is common in China. If you walk through a park, you might see people doing these slow and beautiful actions. They are doing Taichi, an ancient art called Wushu. Doing Taichi is good for our health. It can make us walk and move freely. During slow actions we can pay special attention to our hands and feet. We can control them better. Taichi also mixes slow actions and deep breaths perfectly. People will become healthier by practicing it.

Everything keeps changing that is how we should see the world. Yin and yang depend on each other and make differences to each other. That is why humans can get on well with nature and people can use softness to beat hardness. Taichi makes full of yin and yang.

In China, Taichi has been practiced for about 600 years. At present, more people are encouraged to join in the Taichi and pass it on. Over 100 million people in more than 150 countries practice Taichi. It is getting more and more popular in the world.

Use it or lose it

The human body grows with the pull of Earth's gravity (重力).But in space, our bones and muscles (肌肉) don't need to support our body's weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. It's reported that astronauts can lose up to 20% of their muscles after just a couple of weeks. That is dangerous for astronauts because they will be too weak to work.

Astronauts have different ways to prevent this.During the lecture,Zhai introduced a special uniform Ye was wearing. It's called a "penguin suit".There are many elastic bands(弹力带)inside the suit.Wearing it,astronauts use their muscles to stretch(拉伸) the bands. This keeps their muscles strong.Wang also showed students how she walked on a treadmill (跑步机) and rode a bicycle.Astronauts exercise with these tools every day to prevent muscle loss.

Space water is different

Water in space acts differently from water on Earth in other ways. For example, water will not flow(流动) downward if you try to pour it into a cup. That's why astronauts usually drink water through straws(吸管)in sealed(密封的)bags. If astronauts cry,the tears will stay on their eyeballs instead of falling down. They have to wipe(擦拭)them away!

During another experiment,Wang made a water film (膜).Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth.

When you first meet Meggie, you may think she’s strange. She often tells people which word “tastes” good and who has a “delicious” name. But she’s not crazy. She has synesthesia (伴生感觉), something only one in 2,000 people has.

People who have synesthesia experience the world differently. For some people, different words “taste” differently, for some, numbers or letters have colors, and for some, music “touches” parts of their bodies. Many of them experience more than one kind of synesthesia, while some have just one, like Meggie.

Each of them has their own experience- two people with synesthesia may both “feel” music, but they almost never feel the music in the same way. For example, one may feel the music of the violin lightly brushing his face; the other may feel it on her ankle (脚踝). And one’s experience of synesthesia is always the same. If they see the number 5 in the color blue, then 5 is blue every time they see it.

There’s one thing about synesthesia: it can’t be “turned off”. If you have synesthesia, you’ll experience it all the time. Meggie once met a guy and his name made her think of the taste of bad eggs. He was a fun guy, but after thinking about his name all night, she felt too sick to be friends with him. Even so, she still likes this “gift” because that’s what makes her different.

1. What do you learn about Meggie from the first paragraph?

A.

She has a strange name.

B.

She is a good person.

C.

She is a crazy person.

C.

For some people with synesthesia, numbers or letters have colors.

D.

Many people with synesthesia experience more than one kind of it.

3. What did Meggie stop being friends with the guy?

A.

He often played jokes on her.

B.

He enjoys eating bad eggs.

C.

She couldn’t stand his name.

D.

She did not like his gift.

4. Which of the following might be said by Meggie?

A.

“The sound of drums touches my back.”

B.

“The number zero tastes like an apple.”

C.

As we all know, too much trashis a big problem for our environment. A woman in Indonesia’s Java island has come up with a great idea —lending books to children in exchange for trash.

Raden Roro Hendarti, nearly 50 years old, is a librarian in Muntang village. At the beginning of human history, people could only eat food they found. But then people learned to find more ways to get food. About 10, 000 years ago people started to farm the land. After that, people developed farming skills.

People eat different food in different areas. In China rice is the main food for people in the south while the people in the north eat noodles. People who live in European countries near the sea eat lots of fish. But in Central Europe, people are away from the sea. So they don’t eat so much fish. They eat more special meat instead.

Now people can eat different food from different areas. As we can see it is possible to convey food easily from one part of the world to another. Long long time ago, a man called Tom got a book. It was about the secret of a special pebble (鹅卵石) that could turn anything into real gold. The special pebble was lying among other ones on the beach. Because they looked the same, the special pebble was almost impossible to be found. If people touched the special pebble, it would feel warm. However, other pebbles were cold.

After learning the secret, Tom was excited. He dreamed of becoming rich. So he sold all that he had, bought garden forks, went to the beach and started picking up pebbles. On the first day, he picked up pebbles and then he threw them into the sea if there were not special. Again and again, the special pebble didn’t appear. But he didn’t give up and then he continued.

Several years later, suddenly he picked up one pebble which was warm. But because he had such a strong habit of throwing one pebble after another without thinking, he threw this special one into the sea as usual. He lost the chance to be rich. What a pity!

In fact, good chances do come in our life at any time. Try to hold them as soon as possible instead of missing them.

The World for Teenagers(青少年)

Learning Feelings Communication Community Activities

☆☆☆ Question in June: What do you often do after class?

Linda from Britain

I often use old clothes that people don’t wear any more to make bags. I opened a small shop in my community and set up a website to sell the bags online. Many customers think they are fantastic. Now I plan to write a new book about ways to use old clothes.

Linlin from China

Museums often teach me a lot. I have ever been to many museums, such as the ones in Harbin Xian and so on. But the Hangzhou National Tea Museum is my favorite. It’s in this museum that I knew about the history of tea. I watched the tea art performances(表演). They showed how to make a perfect cup of tea with tea sets.

I often cook Chinese food at home. My favorite is Yunnan Rice Noodles. To make the food, we need to have rice noodles, chicken soup, chicken vegetables and eggs. My parents often cookChinese food as well, especially gongbao chicken.
