On weekends, they rode the street cars to parks. Young people liked roller coasters(过山车). ◆The first movie lasted only one minute. Soon movies lasted longer. In the 1920s, movie theatres sold millions of tickets each week. In 1927, movies eventually(最终) had sound. Sometimes, people stayed at home instead, and listened to another new invention — radio. ◆People in cities worked indoors during the week, so they wanted to be outdoors on weekends. Bicycling became a popular activity. |
Now With more time, money and inventions, people have much more choices. ◆They can visit large parks like Disney World and ride modern roller coasters that go higher and faster than ever before. ◆They can choose from lots of different movies at a multiplex(a building with many movie theatres) or watch a video at home. ◆Many people jog(慢跑), bicycle, work out at the gym, or play sports. Teachers say the digital age has had a good and a not-so-good influence on the American teenagers. More than 2,000 high school teachers took an online survey.
75 percent of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a “mostly good” use for their students' research habits and skills, But 87 percent agreed that these technologies "make the students not have enough attention.” And 64 percent said the technologies “do little to help them in courses.”
Judy Buchanan is a director of the National Writing Project. Ms. Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster. Teachers really like these tools, because they are ways to make some of learning exciting. Young people enjoy using these tools. And the goal is to help them become creative students of meaningful work, and not just that kind of copyist.
But one problem the survey found is that many students don't have a good understanding of how to use the digital knowledge well. In other words, they trust(信任) too much of the information. Judy Buchanan says these students have not developed the skills they need to tell whether the online information is good or bad.
Another problem the survey found is something that might not seem like a problem, at all, being-able to quickly find information online. Teachers say the ability of their students to work hard to find answers is becoming weaker. They say students depend too much on search engines (引擎) and do not make enough use, of printed books or research, librarians.
Besides, many teachers are also worried about the problem that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others, instead of using their own abilities.

Do you ever find yourself getting really unhappy for almost no reason? Or suddenly feeling down without knowing why? Going from sadness to anger to joy in a matter of minutes can make many teens feel as though they're losing control. But why is the feeling so common among teens?
Maybe you're starting a new school and not able to see old friends as much. Getting good grades or wanting to be better in sports or other activities can be a concern (关注)for many teens.
Being accepted by friends is important. Teens also may notice, for the first time, a sense of distance from parents and family. You may feel you want to be on your own and make your own decisions, but it can also seem a bit lonely at times.
Another important cause for mood swings is biology. When puberty(青春期)begins, the body starts producing hormones(荷尔蒙). These hormones cause physical changes in the body. But in some people, they also seem to cause emotional(情绪的)changes.
Here are some things you can do that might make those bad moods a bit easier to deal with.
Recognize you're not alone. Although not every teen experiences mood changes to the same degree, they are common.
Talk to people you trust. Friends can help each other by realizing that they're not alone in their feelings. Talking to parents is important, too. Parents can share their own experiences dealing with bad moods. Teachers are often good resources and a doctor can help to answer questions about development.
Get enough sleep. Though it can be hard to find enough time, getting enough rest is very important. Being tired can lead to more sadness.
Create. Taking part in some kinds of activities, like building something out of wood, or starting an art or music piece. Writing can help you organize and express your thoughts and feelings. Get your thoughts on paper. Do the same thing with paint, music, or other art forms. Put your feelings into your artwork.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED, 牛津英语词典) is thinking of adding the Chinese word tuhao (土豪) to its 2014 edition (版本).
The word has become popular in China during the past few months to describe newly rich people who spend money in extravagant(铺张的,浪费的)ways. Tuhao has caught on in Western countries, too, to describe similar people in their countries.
The adoption (采用) of the word by foreign countries is an example of China’s spreading influence in the world not just economically, but also socially and culturally. People are paying attention to what is happening in China and are picking up some Chinese words in the process, especially those words that express unique (独特的) Chinese ideas that cannot be easily translated (翻译) into English.
The OED is also thinking of adding hukou (户口) and dama (大妈) to the already 120 Chinese words in its dictionary. Hukou refers to China’s system of residency permits (户籍系统) and dama refers to middle-aged Chinese women whose gold buying habits influence the global gold markets.
The news that the OED was adding these words has met with some criticism (批评). Some people say the words embarrass (使人尴尬) China, but others insist that in a globalized (全球化的) society it’s natural for words to spread and be adopted elsewhere. In fact, a word like tuhao expresses the humor of China. It’s easy to pronounce and very accurate (精准的) at poking fun at (嘲弄) rich people who have more money than taste.

Try reading the following sentences as fast as you can. “She sells seashells by the seashore. The shells she sells are surely seashells. So if she sells shells on the seashore, I’m sure she sells seashore shells.”
Not very easy, was it? What you’ve just read is called a tongue twister (绕口令). It is an exercise made up of sounds that are hard to pronounce in order to help people pronounce words faster and more correctly. Try the next example.
“Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper. Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers? If Pete Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?”
Tongue twisters usually do not have much meaning. They are just designed to improve people’s ability (能力) to pronounce words. Although they may be very difficult, these exercises are very important to people who are trying to speak English correctly. This is because tongue twisters help people to tell the differences between similar sounds.
So if you wish to pronounce words more smoothly, you’d better try picking out some tongue twisters and practicing them.

The shock of the recent earthquake in Pakistan has brought another shock: the rise of a small island coming out from the water.
In the aftershock of the earthquake, people living in Gawadar, near the southwest coast, began to see a strange sight. They looked out into the Arabian Sea and saw a mountain-like shape coming out of the water. “I could see this gray, dome-shaped (穹顶形状的) body in the distance, like a giant whale,” Bahram Baloch, a local journalist, told the BBC. “Hundreds of people had gathered to watch it in disbelief (怀疑).”
So what happened? The earthquake measured 7.7 in magnitude (地震级数). The force was so strong that it moved the sea floor, releasing gas. This gas pushed the seabed, mostly rock and sand, upward and out of the water. This is how mud volcanoes (泥火山) are formed. The island that measures about 20 meters high, 30 meters long and 90 meters wide is actually the tip of the mud volcano.
Is it safe? Although people have visited this new island, scientists have found dangerous gas coming from the newly formed island. “Our team found bubbles rising from the surface of the island, which caught fire when a match was lit,” said Mohammad Danish, a scientist, to Universe Today.
These mud volcanoes are not rare. But it’s striking because this one has popped up(突然出现) in a populated (有人居住的) area, and not far out in the sea. However, it’s not expected to last very long. Most of these mud volcanoes are swept back under the sea within one year.
After the earthquake, what did people see in the sea?

In the modern world, pressure is a serious problem. Today, most student are under too much pressure. Some students can’t get on well with their classmates. While others may worry about their tests. Even they can't get enough and good sleep. I’m always under pressure, too.
How can we solve the pressure problems? Here are my suggestions.
The first, tell your pressure to someone. I think a conversation with parents or teachers is necessary to solve the problem. We can talk our problems with our teachers or parents. My parents want me to be the top student in class. So they send me to all kinds of training classes at weekends. I feel tired and unhappy. Last Monday evening, I had a talk with my mother. I told her I was not lazy. I really felt tired. I needed time to relax. My mother agreed with me at last.
The second, learn to relax yourself. I think the most important way to relieve us from our pressure is to learn to relax ourselves. In order to relax ourselves, we can turn to some of our hobbies and interests. Different students have different ways. For example, we can listen to music, watch TV, or read some books. But for me I often exercise. I enjoy it. I think taking exercise can not only rest our brains and eyes but also help build our bodies. I think sports are really helpful to both my health and my study. We can also go for a trip. We can visit somewhere beautiful and peaceful to relax. And we can get close to the nature.

Maybe most people know that there is water pollution, air pollution and noise pollution around us, but few people know that there is another kind of pollution—light pollution. In fact, it can be everywhere, depending on the time of the day.
Light pollution is the result of the wasted energy. Instead of providing light for people on the earth, most bright light shines into the sky, because people don’t design lights very well. At the same time, lights are brighter than necessary. All these cause light pollution. Stars in the night sky always provide everyone with wonderful sights(景色), but light pollution prevents them from being seen.
Some scientists say that light pollution can also bring some health problems to people, especially to kids. So it’s the high time for us to do something useful to stop light pollution.
根据短文内容,判断下列句子的正(T)误(F)。
Light pollution isn’t serious enough for us to stop it now.
All the people know light pollution well today.
Most light shines into the sky instead of providing light for people.
People in big cities can’t see stars clearly in the night sky.
Light pollution doesn’t do harm to people’s health.
If you lose 12 times in a row (连续地), will you just give up? Dale Carnegie, a pioneer in public speaking and self-development, kept trying. And he became famous by showing people how to be successful.
Carnegie was born into a poor family in the United States. The boy didn’t see a train until he was 12 years old. In his teens, he had to get up at 3 am every day to milk the cows for his family.
When Carnegie first entered college, he felt upset because of his ragged (破旧的) clothes and ordinary(平凡的) looks. His mother encouraged him, “Why not try to be better in other things instead of just dress and good looks?”
Carnegie tried to be more active in college. He joined the debate (辩论) team. But one after another, he lost 12 competitions. The young man was very disappointed with himself. He said later that he thought of killing himself after failing so many times. But soon Carnegie was seen practicing public speaking on the riverside. His hard work paid off at last. In 1906, Carnegie won a famous speech contest and became well-known. “Believe that you will succeed, and you will,” he said.
In order to share his success, Carnegie opened schools and wrote books. His best-sellers(畅销书) include How to Win Friends and Influence People and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. More than 50 million copies of his books have been translated in 38 languages. They are still helping people on the road to success.

Why did Carnegie feel upset when he first entered college?
What did Carnegie do to be more active in college?
What did Carnegie do after failing so many times?

Bicycle sharing systems are also known as yellow bicycle programs, white bicycle programs, public bikes, or free bikes. They are increasingly popular in Europe now. Paris has the world’s largest urban (城市的) cycle rental system.
This is a bike rental station in Paris. The worker is showing how to use a new self-service bike. They say that Paris will become “a green capital of bikes” and they plan to park 20,000 bicycles at 1,600 stations. Paris created this plan to improve the city traffic environment and reduce the waste gas displacement (废弃排气量).
At a rental station, you only have to put your credit card into the machine to rent a bike. It provides French, German, English and Chinese services. If you ride the bike for only 30 minutes to relax, you needn’t pay for it. A two-hour bike rent only costs you 4 euros.
These stations work for 24 hours every day, so a bike is rented for 10 to 14 times a day. In this way there are 200,000 people using bikes a day,
In the past few years, Paris has encouraged its people to ride bikes, but something unhappy has happened now and then. Some people break the traffic rules during rush hours. Some park their bikes everywhere. So how to park bikes is a problem that Paris will face. But this project is still a helpful way to improve its traffic environment. Don’t you think so?

Sports can help you keep fit and close to nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should realize that sport you choose might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource—hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also lots of water. Besides, huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental changes. For example, in the dry places of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for (为…承担责任) serious water shortage(短缺) in some local areas.
There are many environment—friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes, and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also help you stay healthy. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and keep thin.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment—friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms.” They are better replacements(替代) for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership(会员身份). And best of all, it’s free.
