Have you thought of such questions as “Why do I have to study math?” or “I am not interested in history at all. My dream is to be an engineer.Should I give history up?”
Maybe you are right. After you leave school, it’s necessary for you to understand such things. Please remember that at school, besides getting knowledge, you should pay attention to some other important things.
First, try to find what you are most interested in. At school, you study many subjects. Try to find which you like and which you don’t like. This may be helpful to you in the future. Second, maybe you don’t like math and you want to drop it. But the logical thinking ability from math can help you solve some problems. At school, you should practice your brain by thinking. Third, you should believe in yourself. Maybe you learn English at school, but you don’t need to speak English in your daily life at all. You should think learning English can prove that you have the ability of learning languages. Suppose you go to France one day and find a job there. Then you can tell yourself, “I can do my job well. At school I learned English well, and now I must be able to learn French well, too.” But if you have no confidence, what will happen?
Try to challenge yourself as often as possible. I think many of us like playing computer games. When we fail in a game, we always want to try it again. Why? Because we want to get the highest marks, though it is hard for us to get it. If we want to challenge ourselves, we must face more difficult things and make greatest progress.
At school you should _________.

A.study math harder than any other subject
B.stop learning the subjects you don’t like
C.not only get knowledge but also improve your ability
D.pay mor e attention to math

You should not drop math because it can help improve your ________.

I’m Bessy. I began to learn English in Grade 6,not like most of my friends who have been learning English since kindergarten(幼儿园 ) or at least in Grade 3.I fell in love with this foreigner language at once. As an old saying goes, “Interest is the best teacher.” I began to be crazy about English. I learned words and grammar, made sentences, wrote essays and read English storybooks as many as I could.
Some of my friends find it easy to forget the words they learned the other day. So do I! You can’t remember words well without using them often. So you should turn to a dictionary for help when you meet new words and want to know their other meanings and usages. Then make your own sentences from time to time.Another way to keep new words in mind is reading articles. You can easily remember new words through context.

(改编)Almost every Chinese person can recite the two lines of the famous poem, “Every grain on the plate comes from hard work(谁知盘中餐,粒粒皆辛苦).” But sadly, many of us don’t actually get the real meaning of these lines: Don’t waste food.
A CCTV program, News One Plus One, reported that the food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.
Do we have too much food? Of course not. According to the UN World Food Program, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2010, especially in developing countries. Six million children die of hunger every year.
Chinese people are well known for being hospitable(好客的) and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food on the table.
Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Last November, Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Nanjing, got fired because she took some leftover food home for her son. Many people stood by her side and criticized(批评) the waste of food.
What should we do in our daily lives to waste less food? Here are some tips:
1. Do not order too much in a restaurant. Only order as much as you want to eat. If you cannot eat all   the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.
2. Don’t be too picky(挑剔的) about food. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it.
3. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much, especially for vegetables and fruit.

(改编) Dream culture is an important part of ancient Chinese culture. Dream interpreting(理解)is popular in China, and the most famous reference for dream interpreting is the book of Duke of Zhou Interprets Dreams.

Ancient Chinese people thought that dreams could suggest lucky and unlucky things. Since different dreams have different meanings, people can  get meanings of good or bad luck by interpreting them. Actually, dream interpreting is not totally a superstition. It does have some scientific value.
● Dreams are the reflection of the facts. Many dreams are actually something about what happened in the daytime. This kind of dream can be easily understood without dream interpreting.

You can't always predict(预测)a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before going out should cause you to get wet. That's why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post(柱)with its own rain-sensing(感应)umbrella.
The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be fit to have a canopy(伞篷) built into a street lamp,” he said.
The Lampbrella is a post-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric machine which can open or close the umbrella. Sensors(传感器) then make sure that the umbrella offers walkers shelter(遮蔽) whenever it starts raining.
Besides the rain sensor, there's also a 360° moving sensor on the street lamp which finds whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a rather low speed, in order not to hurt the walkers. Besides, it would be fixed on the ground to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being fixed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of walkers.
While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and believes that his creation could be fixed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.
What does the underlined word “forecast” mean in Chinese?

Keeping a positive attitude isn't always easy, especially when we go through a difficult time in our life. However, we know, only when we take a positive attitude, can we overcome the difficulties.
On July 23rd, 1993, Wang Jiapeng lost his legs when his plane crashed. Wang was only 12 years old. He felt he was the unluckiest person in the world. When he saw students with their schoolbags on their backs, the sound of his wheelchair made him sick. Wang’s mother took him to a special hospital in Beijing. She looked after him in the daytime and worked at night to make money. But after two years, Wang was still not able to leave the hospital. Wang’s mother became too tired to go on and one day she herself became a hospital patient! One morning she woke up and saw her son holding breakfast for her. Wang’s trip to the food shop was his first time outside the hospital in two years. The five-minute walk took him thirty minutes.
But he was finally able to make an important decision. He didn’t care how other people looked at him. He had to learn to do things himself.
For the next few years, Wang taught himself all his middle school subjects in the hospital and five years after the accident, he won a chance to study in a college in Norway. Wang learned to drive, go rock climbing and ski. He even won two gold medals for skiing in an international skiing competition.
“You are what you think you are,” said Wang. “If you think you’re disabled, you are. If you don’t think so, you aren’t.”
So we know that if you can keep a positive attitude, even when things aren't going well in your life, you are the true winner of life.

A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms (习语), though my teacher told us the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience.
One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be surprised. Gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, he said,“You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not a right topic. “Well, I’d better change the topic.” So I said to him. “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? Recently there are about 55,000 children who don’t go to school each day in England. According to the law(法律), all children between five and sixteen must go to school on weekdays, and their parents must make sure of this.
The number of children missing school is increasing. The government is worried, because, according to a research, children who often don't go to school are more likely(可能的)to smoke, drink under age or do some other bad things. Also, it’ s difficult for them to do well in exams. What’s more, it’s harder for them to get a job after they leave school. Since 2002,the police have kept checking town centers where truants(逃学者)often go. These happen twice a year. During each check, a student will be stopped and asked why they are not in school. This will happen even though they are with an adult. The police will stop and question(盘问)children who they think do not have a reason for being out of school. Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable(一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don’t have to bring their own. But if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring these things of your own. That’s because some hotels in Beijing have no longer provided guests with these disposables (一次性用品). Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It’s a waste of natural resources (资源) and is very bad for the environment.
In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take 100 to 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw away, the better environment we will have.
So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again. Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life:
Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones.
After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then use it over and over again.
Do not use paper cups.
At your school canteen (餐厅), use your own bowls and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.

One day, I heard an American boy say to a Chinese student of English, “You speak very good English.” But the student answered, “NO, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made himself understood or the Chinese student had not heard him clearly, he said, “Yes, indeed, you speak very well.” But the Chinese student sill kept saying “No.” In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t know what to say.
What’s wrong with the student’s answer? He didn’t accept a compliment(赞美词)in the same way as the American people do. He should answer “thank you” instead of “no”. He really understood what the American boy had said, but he thought he should be modest(谦虚的).In the west, people will feel proud and confident when they are praised. So if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say “Thank you”. If someone says to a woman “You look so beautiful with the new clothes on.” She must be very happy and answer “Thank you”.
In our country we think being modest is a virtue(美德)and being proud is a bad thing, but in my opinion, being confident does not mean being proud, so  sometimes you should be confident instead of being modest.
If you are modest and say, “No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well” while working in a western country, the others may think that you really cannot do it. If you often say “No”, you will certainly be looked down upon by others. If asking for a job, one says something like “Yes, I can certainly do it” instead of “Let me have a try”, he or she will expect to get it. So in the west, you should be brave to show your self-confidence!
Why was the American boy surprised at the Chinese student’s answer?

A.Because he was expecting the Chinese student to say “Thank you”.
B.Because he wouldn’t like others to say “No”.
C.Because he could hardly hear what the student had said.
D.Because he wondered whether the student could really speak good English.

As the student kept saying “No”, the American boy ________.

A.became disappointed B.didn’t know what to say
C.lost his interest D.got angry

In the west, if you meet a friend who wears a really beautiful dress, you may say “________”.

A.Where do you buy it?
B.Could you give me your dress?
C.How beautiful you are today!
D.I want a dress like yours very much.

Why does a man in the west who asks for a job say something like “Yes, I can certainly do it”?

A.Because he is not modest.
B.Because he is confident and he wants to get the job.
C.Because he just wants to try.
D.Because he can do nothing but speak in that way.

We can learn that the writer wants us to ________ through his passage.

A.be modest B.be confident
C.be clever D.be beautiful
