When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence, word for word, into your own language. Take the sentence “How do you do?” as an example. If you looked up each word in the dictionary, once at a time, what is your translation (翻译)? It must be a wrong sentence in your own language.
Languages do not just have different sounds; they are different in many ways. Its important to master(掌握)the rules for word order in the study of English, too. If the speaker puts words in a wrong order, the listener can’t understand his sentence easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence changes. But sometimes the order is changed, but the meaning of the sentence doesn’t change. Let’s see the different between the two parts of sentences.
“She only likes apples.” “Only she likes apples.”
“I have seen the film already.” “I have already seen the film.”
When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit(精神实质) of the language and use it as the English speaker does.

July 16th was a bad day for Arthur Johnson. In the morning, he set off from his home in Santa Barbara, California. It was the start of his summer holidays, and he decided to visit his friends at Las Vegas. Then he hoped to go fishing at Lake Mead.
Johnson’s troubles started while he was driving happily across the Mojave Desert. His car broke down and he tried to repair it, but he failed. He telephoned a workshop to ask it to send a tow truck (拖车) to pull the car away and repair it.
When waiting for the tow truck, he fell asleep. While he was sleeping, a tow truck arrived from San Pedro (the nearest town) and pulled his car away. Later on, Johnson woke up and thought that somebody had stolen his car. Unwillingly, he started to walk back towards San Pedro, but a police car stopped him to find out why he was walking in the desert.
Johnson looked like a man wanted in California for robbery, so the police kept him at San Pedro for the night. The next day, Johnson’s friends came from California. They proved that Johnson was a harmless salesman, so they let him go.

By 1930 the company had 700 workers and it turned out 13,000 machines a year. Some went to offices and homes in Italy, but more typewriters were sold to other countries.

During their lives, many people experience difficulties and struggle (努力) to do something. When I lived in China, it was a hard struggle for me to learn Chinese and get used to Chinese customs.
The first day I went to school, I didn’t understand what my teachers and my classmates said. I just sat in my seat without doing anything, but when I went back home, I cried and told my mom that I wanted to leave for my homeland.
Later, however, I decided I had to study Chinese very hard, but it was very difficult to learn the language. Every day at school, I tried to talk to the Chinese students and make friends with them. When school was over, I studied Chinese at home by watching Chinese TV programs. That turned out to be a very good way to improve my Chinese. Little by little, I began to speak Chinese in school and I began to make many friends. Finally, I got a very high grade in the Chinese exam and naturally I became used to Chinese customs.
Now, I like to talk with Chinese people and I like Chinese food too. The experience of struggling to learn Chinese in China was unforgettable, and I’ll never forget the time when I learned so much.

If you lose 12 times in a row (连续地), will you just give up? Dale Carnegie, a pioneer in public speaking and self-development, kept trying. And he became famous by showing people how to be successful.
Carnegie was born into a poor family in the United States. The boy didn’t see a train until he was 12 years old. In his teens, he had to get up at 3 am every day to milk the cows for his family.
When Carnegie first entered college, he felt upset because of his ragged (破旧的) clothes and ordinary(平凡的) looks. His mother encouraged him, “Why not try to be better in other things instead of just dress and good looks?”
Carnegie tried to be more active in college. He joined the debate (辩论) team. But one after another, he lost 12 competitions. The young man was very disappointed with himself. He said later that he thought of killing himself after failing so many times. But soon Carnegie was seen practicing public speaking on the riverside. His hard work paid off at last. In 1906, Carnegie won a famous speech contest and became well-known. “Believe that you will succeed, and you will,” he said.
In order to share his success, Carnegie opened schools and wrote books. His best-sellers(畅销书) include How to Win Friends and Influence People and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. More than 50 million copies of his books have been translated in 38 languages. They are still helping people on the road to success.

Nowadays, many children spend hours a day looking at computer screens or other digital (数码的) products. Some eye care doctors say all the screen time has caused more children to have what they call computer vision syndrome (视力综合症).
Nathan Warford is an optometrist in the US. He says he has seen more children having eye problems. “More children come into my office because their parents have noticed that they have headaches (头疼)or red eyes, or because their degree of short-sightedness appears to be increasing (增加)very fast and they’re worried,” he said.
Dr. Warford says part of the problem is that even if their eyes start to feel uncomfortable or they start to get a headache, some children don’t tell their parents, because they don’t want their games or the computer to be taken away. Another part of the problem is that people blink (眨眼睛) less often when they look at the screen.A person who uses a computer or a digital product blinks about a third as much as we normally(正常地) do in everyday life. If eyes can’t stay wet or are too tired, they will not be protected like normal.

I am Simon. When I was about 12, I had an enemy(敌人), a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Sometimes she said I was thin. Sometimes she said I was lazy. Sometimes she said I wasn’t a good student. Sometimes she said I talked too much, and so on. I tried to put up with her as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked, “Are the things she said true or not? Mary, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me and to my surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true.
I brought the list back to my dad. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be helpful to you. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you think is right.”
Many years have passed. The situation often appears in my mind. In our life we often meet with some trouble and we often go to someone and ask for advice. For some advice you will treasure all your life!

My summer hols wr CWOT. B4, we usd 2 go 2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3:-@ kids FTF ILNY, its gr8.
Can you understand this sentence? If you can't, don't feel too bad: neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Net speak: the language of computerized communication found on Internet or cell phones. To newcomers, it can look like a completely foreign language. So, what is the "translation" of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York; it's great.
Schoolteachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming(破坏)the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students' writing. They fear the language could become corrupted(面目全非).
Everyone should just relax, say linguists(语言学家). They believe Net speak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Net speak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nurnberg, from Stanford University, agrees. "People get better at writing by writing," he says, "Kids who are now doing text messages, e-mail, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than, their parents."
Linguist James Milroy says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are harming the language. And you can bet your bottom dollar that when today's teenagers become tomorrow's parents, they too will think this way. Milroy argues that languages do not and cannot become "corrupted"; they simply change to meet the new needs.
However, Net speakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write Standard(标准) English. Cynthia McVey says, "I can understand Net speak worries teachers and it's important that they get across to their pupils that text messaging is for fun, but that learning to write proper English is a must(绝对必要的事物)for their future."
Perhaps we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, age 12, says, "I wouldn't use text language in my homework. Texting is just for fun".
What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To give an example of a foreign language. |
B.To show an example of creative methods. |
C.To express worries about using Net speak. |
D.To lead in the topic of Net speak. |
Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Cynthia McVey points out teenagers can deal with Net speak properly. |
B.Geoffrey Nurnberg believes Net speakers can write Standard English. |
C.David Crystal thinks Net speak helps develop the habit of writing. |
D.James Milroy says that language is changing and improving. |
The expression "bet your bottom dollar" in Paragraph 5 means ______.
A.be fairly sure |
B.be greatly surprised |
C.think it a pity |
D.find it interesting |
What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Net speak: A Widely-Used Language on Internet |
B.Is Net speak Harming the English Language? |
C.Is Net speak Helpful in Language Learning? |
D.Net speak: Advantages and Disadvantages |
Martin Lynch,an American businessman, had been going on vacation to a small Mexican fishing village for a number of years. One morning while going for a walk along the beach, he saw his friend Pablo Perez, a local fisherman. Martin watched Pablo unload his boat and pack the fish in a box.
Martin noticed Pablo was smiling and looked very happy. He could also see several large fish in the boat. Martin greeted Pablo and asked how long it took to catch the fish. “Just a few hours,” replied Pablo. Martin asked,“Why didn’t you stay longer and catch more fish?” “I have enough for my family,” Pablo said. “And what do you do with the rest of your day?” asked Martin. “ I take a nap, play with my children, spend time with my wife, and go into the village to see my friends and play cards. “Then what?” asked Pablo, “Well you would probably have to move to Mexico City to run the business. Finally, you would be able to sell your business and make millions of dollars,”replied Martin. “How long will that take?” asked Pablo. Martin thought for a while and said it would probably take at least 15 years.
