It’s reported that school accidents, such as food poisoning (食物中毒), fires, electricity and traffic, kill more primary and middle school students than anything else. So we must learn how to protect ourselves better. Here are some tips for keeping safety in mind every day.
On our way home or to school: Wait for the green traffic light, and look left and right before we cross the road. We’d better wear bright-color clothes, so the drivers can see us easily. Don’t believe strange people in the street.
At school: When students around us begin to push each other, we need to stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If we fall down in a moving crowd, use both hands to cover the head. Lean to one side, curl up (蜷缩) our body and bend (使弯曲) the legs.
In a fire: Stay calm. Leave the classroom quickly under the directions of the teachers. Smoke can be more dangerous than fire, so use a piece of cloth to cover our mouth and nose. What will we do if the clothes burn? Remember not to run! Drop and fall to the ground. Then roll! It will make the fire go out.
For eating: Wash fruits carefully before eating them. Check the expiration dates (保质期) on the packages of the snacks, and if it looks or smells bad, don’t eat it.

I bought a jasmine plant for my office. When I bought it, I was told it would bloom(开花) and the sweet smell would fill my office. I had the plant for two months, and every day I looked at it, but there weren’t any flowers or pleasant smell. I was not happy, so I gave the plant to my friend Linda.
One day, another friend Mary called and invited me to her office. When I walked in, her jasmine flowers surprised me. I reached out to touch the flowers. Mary cut some and gave them to me. I couldn’t help smelling them. Surrounded by the sweet smell of only a handful of these flowers, I suddenly understood something.
Mary bought her plant the same time I did. It took a year for her jasmine to bloom. I was so impatient for mine to bloom; regretfully, I gave it away.

Computers can injure(伤害)you. Most other injuries happen suddenly. For example,if you fall off a bike and break your arms, it happens very quickly. But computer injuries happen slowly. You probably know how to ride a bike safely. Now learn some ways of keeping you away from computer injuries.
Your eyes
Too much light can injure your eyes, so never sit too close to a computer screen. Your eyes should be more than 50 centimeters from the screen. Don’t forget to look away from it sometimes. This gives your eyes a rest.
When you use a computer, the window should be on your left or your right. If it is behind you, the light will reflect on(反射)the screen. If the window is in front of you,the sun and the screen will both shine into your eyes.
Your hands and wrists(手腕)
Hand and wrist injuries can happen because you move the hands and wrists in the same way hundreds of times. If you use a keyboard for a long time, follow these three rules:
Rest your wrists on something.
Keep your elbows(肘)as high as the keyboard.
Stop sometimes and exercise your hands, wrists and fingers in a different way.
Your back
Some people sit for many hours before a computer. If you sit in the wrong way, you can injure your back or your neck. So you should keep your back straight when you sit. The top part of the screen should be in front of your eyes. Your forearms, wrists, hands and the upper part of your legs should all be parallel(平行)to the floor. If you are sitting for a long time, get up every half an hour and exercise your arms, legs and neck.
Enjoy your computer, but use it safely.

Many young people all over the world love to travel and see the world. Have you heard of backpackers? They are normally young people who travel cheaply with just one bag and comfortable walking boots. They buy local food in supermarkets to save money and at the same time become friends with local people.
Some people prefer adventure tours. Brave people may try bungee(蹦极) jumping from the bridge overlooking the Victoria Falls in Africa with only a rope around their legs. Some enjoy the challenge of rock climbing in the Alps in Switzerland. Others may go ice skiing in the Rocky Mountains in the USA.
Have you ever heard of an ecotourism (生态旅游)? It means a holiday in which people come close to nature but are very careful not to destroy the nature beauty or living things in the area. How can this be possible? Let's read an interview with people who enjoyed a swimming with dolphins tour.
Interviewer what was the most exciting part of your holiday?
Sharon from South Africa I felt excited when I heard the sound of wild dolphins beside me in the water and then swimming directly under me. An image I will never forget.
Xavier from Portugal There were two dolphins below us swimming downwards. One stopped and looked back at me as if to say “What are those strange things?” Fantastic!
Interviewer Did you feel that your holiday helped local people and areas to keep their beautiful environment?
Jane from New Zealand The hotel and the whale and dolphin watching companies hire local people. They used to hunt those whales and dolphins, but now they can earn money from tourism and mustn’t kill whales and dolphins. Not many boats are used at the same time so these animals aren't disturbed. The boat companies also work to educate the local schools about the importance of protecting these wonderful animals.
Helen from England I am glad they are not killing the whales and dolphins any more, but the cars and boats use fuel(燃料) which could cause pollution and make the sea dirtier.
Well, what do you think? Thousands of people visit the Forbidden City or the Great Wall of China every year. Do you think that's a good thing, or do you feel that China's important tourist attractions can be affected? Are there any ways of sharing your treasures (珍宝) but keeping them in good condition?

From the first paragraph, backpackers are young people________.

A.visiting historical places in China
B.traveling cheaply with just one bag
C.who love to travel and see the world alone
D.who love to buy local things as souvenirs

What can't you do when you take an ecotourism?

A.Come close to nature in the holiday carefully.
B.Protect the living things in the area.
C.Be careful not to destroy the nature beauty.
D.Keep the local people unhappy.

Sharon, Xavier, Jane and Helen think the tours are helpful EXCEPT________.

A.the hotel and the companies hire local people to help them earn money
B.local people used to hunt and kill whales and dolphins but now they don't
C.not many boats are used at the same time so animals aren't disturbed
D.the cars and boats use fuel to cause pollution and make the sea dirtier

According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A.It's a cheap and popular way to travel and see the world as a backpacker.
B.We believe an ecotourism can greatly protect the nature beauty and living things.
C.China's tourist attractions can be protected because of being visited by tourists.
D.We’d better find good ways to share our treasures and keep them good.

Jack’s brother bought a magazine called Choice. It introduces to its readers information about all kinds of products like cameras, computers, cars, etc. This information helps them make the best choice when they buy something.
Jack borrowed his brother’s magazine when he needed a new computer. “I’ll read about all the different computers,” he said, “And I’ll choose the best one.”
ThinkPad G450M-T4300: This computer comes with lots of good software. However it does not have much memory and is rather slow. At $3,600, it’s not very good value for money.
HP CQ40-506AX: This is the most expensive computer we tasted. However it is also the most
reliable(值得信赖的). It is very fast and has lots of memory. Though it’s 600 dollars more expensive than ThinkPad G450M-T4300, it is worth the extra money if you can afford it.
The Acer A175-78: At only $2,600, this is the cheapest computer we tasted. It has plenty of memory and is quite fast. However, it “crashed” twice while we were testing it and we cannot recommend(推荐) it for reliability.
Jack choose HP CQ40-506AX. “I know it’s expensive, brother,” he said. “But it will last me a long time and do everything I want it to do.”

On a hot African morning, Leila was lying on her stomach and an elephant was walking towards her. Leila waited. Then she pushed the button on her camera. “And I got my best photo of an elephant ever, by lying under my car,” Leila explained. “I wanted to get close to the elephants, but of course this was dangerous; they had their babies with them. So every morning I used to park my car in the open near the path (小道). They used to take the same path every morning when they left the water hole. After a week, they were used to seeing my car. So the next morning, I lay under it and got my photo!”
Many of the best wildlife photos come from good planning. In Africa, photographers set up their hides (隐匿处) near water holes. They also set up hides near forest paths, as animals use the same paths every night. For bird-watching, many lakes have hides. Inside the hides, bird-watchers can watch all day in the shade (荫处) out of the wind and rain.
Good wildlife photos are needed for books, postcards, magazines and newspapers. But a success rate of 1 in 20 is good.
Why did Leila lie under her car on the stomach?

A.Because she wanted to sleep.
B.Because she wanted to take photos but was afraid of the animals.
C.Because it’s easy to see the elephants.
D.Because it’s very comfortable.

How can photographers take good photos?

A.By making good preparation.
B.By going into the forest at night.
C.By walking around the holes.
D.By going to the nearest lake.

What can we know from the last sentence of the passage?

A.The successful rate of taking wildlife photos is 50% at most.
B.Photographers who take wildlife photos need more practice.
C.To take good wildlife photos is not difficult.
D.It’s hard to take good wildlife photos.

I never saw my father home from work late or ill, nor did I ever see my father take a “night out with the boys”. He had no bobbies but just took care of his family.
For 22 years, since I left home for college, my father called me every Sunday at 9:00 am. He was always interested in my life-how my family was doing. The calls even came when he and my mother were in Australia, England or Florida.
Nine years ago when I bought me first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days, painting my house. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked, was a glass of iced tea, and that I hold a paintbrush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy, for I had a law practice to run, and I could not take the time to hold the paintbrush, or talk to my father.
Five years ago, my 71-year-old father spent five hours putting together a swing set(秋千)for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea, and talk to him, But again, I had laundry to do, and the house to clean.
The morning on Sunday, January 16, 1995, my father telephoned me as usual, this time he had seemed to have forgotten some things we had discussed the week before. I had to get to church, and I cut the conversation short.
The call came at 4:40 am. That day my father was sent to hospital in Florida. I got on a plane immediately, and I vowed(发誓)that when I arrived, I would make up for the lost time, and have a nice long talk with him ad really get to know him.
I arrived in Florida at 1:00 am, but my father had passed away at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.
In the years since his death I have learnt much about my father, and even more about every single day.
We know from the reading that the father_____.

A.liked to paint houses
B.had no friends around him
C.was not healthy in his youth
D.thought of his family as his all

When her father painted her first house, the daughter_____.

A.could only afford a glass of iced tea
B.was too busy to talk to her father

On January 16, 1996, the daughter felt that her father_____.

A.seemed to be a little different
B.had no time to phone her as usual
C.became interested in church
D.had forgotten to discuss some things with her

In the reading the underlined phrase ‘get to know him’ most probably means_____.

A.get him to know her B.know more about him
C.get him to know himself D.make him well-known

Which is the best title of the reading?

A.Painting Houses B.Daughter’s Family
C.Father and I D.Father’s phone calls
