This is a part from US President Barack Obama’s speech on May 14 at Bamard College in New York.
… My last piece of advice – this is simple, but perhaps most important: 36. Nothing worthwhile is easy. No one of achievement has avoided failure – sometimes catastrophic failures. But they keep at it. They learn from mistakes. They don’t 37.
When I first arrived on this 38, I was with little money, fewer options. But it was here that I tried to find my place in this world. I knew I wanted to make a difference, but it was 39 how in fact I’d go about it. But I wanted to do my part to 40 a better world.
So even as I worked after graduation in a few 41 jobs here in New York, even as I went from motley (鱼龙混杂的)apartment to motley apartment, I 42.
… And I wish I could say that this perseverance came from some innate (天生的)toughness in me. But the truth is, it was 43. I got it from 44 the people who raised me. I grew up as the son of a single mom who struggled to put herself through 45 and make ends meet. She had a marriage that fell apart; 46 went on food stamps at one point to help us 47. But she didn’t quit. And she earned her degree, and made sure that 48 scholarships and hard work, my sister and I earned 49.
And 50, I met a woman who was assigned to advise me on my first summer job at a law firm. And she gave me such good advice that I married her. And Michelle and I gave everything we had to balance our careers and a 51 family. We made that marriage work.
… So 52 it’s starting a business, or running for office, or 53 an amazing family, remember that making your 54  on the world is hard. It takes patience. It takes commitment. It comes with plenty of 55 and it comes with plenty of failures.

For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, to serve some sort of  1  , teach you a lesson, or to help you figure out who you are or who you want to become. You  2 know who these people maybe (possibly your roommate, neighbor, co-worker, long lost friend, lover, or even a complete stranger), but when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment they will affect your life in some way.
And sometimes things happen to you that may seem horrible, painful. and unfair at first, but __4__you find that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realized your potential, strength, willpower, or heart.
Everything happens for a reason.Nothing happens or by means of good luck. Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. these small tests whatever they may be, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere. It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly  7 .The people you meet who affect your life, and the success and downfalls you experience, help to create who you are and who you become.
Even the  8  experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones.If someone hurts you,   9  you, or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious when you open your heart. If someone loves you, love them back  10  , not only because they love you, but because in a way, they are teaching you to love and how to open your  11  and eyes to things.
Make every day count.  12  every moment and take from those moments everything that you possibly can for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people that you have never talked to before, and actually listen.Let yourself fall in love, break free, and set your sightshigh.Hold your head up because you have  13 right to.Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don’t believe in yourself, it will be hard for others to believe in you. You can make of your life anything you wish. Create your own life and then go out and live it with absolutely no 14
Most importantly, if you LOVE someone, tell him or her, for you never know what tomorrow may have  15  . And learn a lesson in life each day that you live.
That’s the story of life.

We often see hitchhikers(搭便车的人), standing by the side of the road, thumb sticking out, waiting for a lift. But it is getting          nowadays. What killed hitchhiking?             is often mentioned as a reason. Movies about murderous hitchhikers and real-life crime            many drivers off picking up hitchhikers.             no single women picked me up on my journey to Manchester            reflects the safety fear:            , strangely dressed man is seen as dangerous.
But the reason may be           complex: hitchhiking happens where people don’t have cars and transport services are           . Plenty of people          hitchhike in Poland and Romania. Perhaps the rising level of car ownership in the UK means the few people lift hitchhiking are usually considered strange. Why can’t they          cars? Why can’t they take the coach or the train?
Three-quarters of the UK population have             a car; many of the             will be quite old. The potential hitchhiking population is therefore small.         my trip proves it’s still possible to hitchhike. The people who picked me up were very interesting lawyer, retired surgeon, tank commander, carpenter, man who live in an isolated farmhouse and a couple             in the mountains. My conclusion is that only really interesting people are mad enough to pick up fat blokes(家伙) in red, spotted scarves. Most just wanted to do someone a good turn; a few said they were so surprised to see a hitchhiker that they couldn’t help         .
The future of hitchhiking most           lies with car-sharing organized over the Internet, via sites such as hitchhikers. org. But for now, you can still stick your thumb out (actually, I didn’t do much of that,            just to hold up my destination sign) and people—wonderful, caring, sharing, unafraid people—will stop.
In the UK, with its cheap          and reasonable rail service, I don’t think I’ll make a habit of it. But having enjoyed it so much, I’m ready now to do a big trip              Europe and beyond. In the 1970s a female friend of my wife’s hitchhiked to India. How wonderful it would be to have another go,           Afghanistan might be a challenge. I wish I’d got that tank commander’s mobile number.
