"Hello"-it's one of the first words we learn as babies, yet it's one of the last ones we think to use as adults. That's regrettable(令人遗憾的) , because saying hello is more than just saying hello-it is the respect of another's worth. How might the world change-how might we change-if we used this word well? To find out, l spent one month saying hello to every person I met. Here's what I've learned.
It can improve productivity. In one of the few studies ever done on this subject, Allan Allday, an assistant professor(副教授)of special education at Oklahoma State University, had middle school teachers greet their students individually (单独地) each morning. This exchange of greetings raised the kids' productivity. School went from impersonal to personal (富有人情味的) , and that led to more class participation(参与) and better grades.
Environments influence friendliness, One study found that people in the city were less likely to shake hands with a stranger than those in the countryside. And researchers say, pleasure environments generally encourage more smiles and hellos than unpleasant ones. My experience was similar. Whatever the reason, my hellos were answered far less often than the ones in the countryside. Similarly, people in vacation areas, like the Jersey Shore, were far friendlier than those hurrying to work in the centre of the city.
It's a form of health insurance(保险). It's impossible to say hello without smiling. And smiling has been shown to lower blood pressure(血压) , make people feel happier and improve happiness. It seems that saying hello creates a similar influence.
So maybe we can make the world a better place by saying hello. After a month of doing it. I feel lighter and more connected and I have a better sense of well-being.
What can we know from the first paragraph?

A.People can say hello since they are born
B.Saying hello is a way to show respect to others.
C.People lose the ability to say hello when they grow up.
D.Saying hello is a way to change the world completely.

Which of the following is true according to the second paragraph?

A.Students will get good grades by saying hello very often.
B.An assistant professor likes greeting his students every morning.
C.The teacher who often says hello to students is very popular at school.
D.Kids will be more active in class by exchanging greetings with teachers.

From the passage, we learn that_______.

A.smiles can take the place of hellos
B.people living in the city refuse to say hello
C.environments play a role in creating friendliness
D.having health insurance is more important than saying hello

The underlined word "well-being" in the last paragraph means_______.

A.health and happiness
B.comfort and quietness
C.pride and confidence
D.peace and hopefulness

The Acronym, our student newspaper, reports that many students go to sleep at 1:30 a. m. Even if that's an exaggeration(夸张) , it's too close to the truth. Scientists say teens should sleep nine hours each night. But that's hard to do.
Some even pull all-nighters. In the morning they don't look good. One of my classmates did a survey on this problem. She found that most kids pull all-nighters to finish homework, but some do it for other reasons, such as playing computer games.
I usually go to bed around midnight. If I stay up past l:30 a. m., I won't get any work done. I'll fall asleep at my computer. My classes begin at 7:30 a. m. I am partly awake in my first class. By midday, I am finally wide-awake. But by 3:00 p. m. I am slowing down again. Yet I get more sleep than the Acronym's many students.
Most American high schools seem to have a similar problem with sleepy students. High school classes start at 7:30 a. m., so students have to wake up one and a half hours before that to get ready and catch the bus. It's believed that lack of sleep can damage (损坏) both grades and health.
Acronym is the name of_______.

A.a TV station B.a school
C.a student D.a newspaper

What's the main problem the passage mentions?

A.Many kids have too much homework to do.
B.Many teenagers don't have enough sleep.
C.Many children are crazy about playing computer games.
D.Many kids wake up too early.

The underlined sentence means that the report_______.

A.is quite true B.is far from being true
C.is completely false D.is not true

Curry around the world
“Curry” is the English word used to describe meat or vegetables in a spicy, usually served with rice. It is believed that the word “Curry” comes from the Tamil word “kari”.
Curries have been very popular dishes in many Asian countries throughout history. Although curry is believed to come originally from India, it has been eaten in many other Asian countries—for thousands of years.
Today, curries are eaten all over the world. This tasty, spicy dish was brought to the West by British people from India in the 17th century.
What we call curry today is an international dish that is well known around the world. Over time and distance, the flavours of dishes change so that the people eating the dish will like it. For example, the most popular curry in restaurants in the UK is called chicken tikka masala. Many British people think this is an Indian dish. However, it is really a dish created by restaurants in the UK and is not a traditional Asian dish at all.
Today curry is loved by people all over the world, unless, of course they don’t like spicy food. (选自《补充习题》九下)

Have you ever asked your relatives or friends if there is Wi-Fi in their houses? Have you ever searched for Wi-Fi when you are at restaurants or hotels? The answers will probably be "Yes". Most of us want Wi-Fi everywhere as if we can't live without it. But we can only use free Wi-Fi in some public places. We still have to spend some money accessing(连接)the Internet at most time. Here comes a piece of good news.

Paper was not made in southern Europe until the year of 1100. Though Scandinavia(斯堪的维尼亚半岛) now makes a great deal of the world’s paper, it had not begun to make it until 1500. The human brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms, but it can hold much more information than most computers. However, there is another difference between humans and computers. Computers don't forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, and luckily we don't usually have to. But everyone can improve their memory if they want to. Here are some suggestions.
◆Try to use new information immediately(立刻). For example, if you meet someone who says "Hi! I'm Carlos," don't just say "Hello." Repeat the person's name. Say"____"
◆Break a big number into smaller parts. For example, it's hard to memorize (记忆) 109244153. But if you break it into three parts--109/244/153—it becomes easier.
◆Write out what you need to remember over and over again. This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially for memorizing formulas (公式) or facts.
◆Always review information. If you bring what you've learned back to your mind, they become easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it’s a good idea to review the new things you learned that day.
◆Discuss with a friend. It is always easier to remember things through discussions. You can have a discussion about what's right and what's wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.
Never tell yourself that you have a bad memory. You can always do something to help improve your memory. And everyone's memory gets better if they use it often enough.
All of the suggestions are helpful. If you follow them, you are certain to improve your memory.
How many suggestions are mentioned in the passage?

A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six.

Which should be put in the blank (空格) in Paragraph 2?

C.Hello, I am Sophia. D.Glad to meet you!

What can help memorize a big number more easily according to the passage?

A.To store it in a computer.
B.To break it into smaller parts.
C.To discuss it with a friend.
D.To review it before you sleep.

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Discussing with friends can help you remember things.
B.Always reviewing information can help you fall asleep.
C.Formulas and facts can help you learn about your brain.
D.Human beings can improve their memory by computer.
