At most school, “going green” means less rubbish or recycling. But at New York’s Riverdale Country School, it means being advised to run and even jump in the hallways. And the students really enjoy doing that.
Why? It because the hallways were built with special kinetic(动能的)tiles. When students run or jump on the floor tiles, electricity will be generated(产生). The electricity can be used to power classroom lights, science projects and charge electronic products. 14-year-old Zach Halem tried to make the officials buy them. There are eight tiles near the school’s student center.
Besides providing fun green energy, it’s also a good way to teach the students to be creative. They will be inspired to be scientists, inventors and engineers in the future to find clean energy for all humans.
The tiles are mostly made from rubber and other recycled things. They were invented by an English man Laurence Kembell-Cook. While new to the US, They have been put in many places in Europe- from a London Underground Station during the 2012 Olympics to a marathon (马拉松)track in Paris. When Pavegen started getting popular in London schools, Laurence began to realize that his invention not only saved energy ,but was also fun!
Why do the students of New York’s Riverdale Country School enjoy running in the hallways?
Who invented the special floor tiles?
What are the special floor tiles made of?
How can the kids at New York’s Riverdale Country School save energy from the floor tiles ?
What do you think of the invention?

English is spoken as a first language by about 375 million people and as a foreign language by around 750 million people. It is being learned by about a billion people. These numbers alone make English to learn. If you are not fluent (流利的) in English, it may be good for you to know the advantages of learning the language.
In many countries, English is used as a working language. In the United States, English speakers make more money than those who don’t speak English at all. Learning . English can increase the chance of getting a good job.
If you visit a country, you can easily find someone who can speak at least a little English. So if 'you know English, you have a chance to communicate almost anywhere you travel.
Its not easy for parents who don’t understand English to raise children in an English -speaking country. For example; if they send their children to school and the teacher does not speak their mother language, parents are likely to have difficulty communicating with the teacher. And if the children have homework they do not understand, parents cannot help them.

The right name is important in the business world. All you have to do is think of the names for some of the products you buy every day and you’ll agree that the name and the product are connected in the everyone’s mind.
In many countries, successful trade or brand names are protected by law. This is so that other companies cannot make a product and, in fact, be buying something different. Businesses register a company or a product name with the government. In fact, more than 1,000 product and company names are registered every hour. Many companies spend a lot of money to find the right name for their products. A good example of this is in the car industry. Some successful names for cars have powerful associations (联系).The Ford Mustang and the Jaguar are only two examples of choosing the names of animals that are fast and strong.
When a U. S company decides to sell its product in another country, it has to make sure that the product name translates properly. When Coca-Cola introduced its soft drink to China, it looked for the right name. It wanted a name that would do two things. One was to present its image(形象)in Chinese and the second was to be close to its first brand name—Coke. It took some efforts before finding the right word —which sounds similar and translates as “happiness in the mouth”. Asian company names are not new to the United States. The brand names of Samsung and Sony have been successful. Finding the right brand name is a big business. Asian companies that sell to foreign markets pay to find a name that will connect with its customers. There are even naming companies that specialize in inventing product names. These companies can charge (要价)up to $100,000 a word for their creations. But it’s worth it. Successful companies know how important the right brand names are for their development.
Why are trade names protected by law in many countries?
A.To make companies pay for naming service. |
B.To help people choose the best products |
C.To present good images of the products. |
D.To prevent good images from being copied |
What can we learn from the passage?
A.Many companies care about the cost of finding the right names |
B.Creative trade names can help companies to have a larger sale |
C.The government often does business with naming companies |
D.It is considered necessary for cars to be names after animals |
What’s the best title for the passage?
A.The Business of Names |
B.The Development of Names |
C.The Rules of Naming Business |
D.The Methods of Choosing Names |
Where can you probably read this article?
A.In an economic magazine. |
B.In a storybook. |
C.In a sports newspaper. |
D.In a science book. |
Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male animal, considers as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species(物种) are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and frighten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢) season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
Some scientists believe that most of the time bird’s singing is actually _____________.
A.an expression of happiness | B.a way of warning |
C.an expression of anger | D.a way of greeting |
What does the underlined word “territory” mean?
A.An area which a bird considers to be its own. |
B.An area for which birds fight against each other. |
C.A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice. |
D.A place where families of other species are not welcome. |
Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?
A.Because they want to invite more friends. |
B.Because they want to find outsiders around. |
C.Because they want to express their happiness. |
D.Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away. |
How does the writer explain birds’ singing?
A.By telling a bird’s story. |
B.By describing birds’ daily life. |
C.By reporting experiment results. |
D.By comparing birds with human beings. |

Stephen Hawkins was born in Oxford, England on 8th January, 1942. He went to school in St. Albans—a small city near London. Although he did well, he was never top of his class. After leaving school, Hawking went first to Oxford University where he studied physics, then he went to Cambridge University where he studied cosmology. As he himself admits, he didn’t work hard. He was a very lazy student, and did very little work. However, he still got good marks.
It was at the age of 20 that Hawking first noticed something was wrong with him. He started to bump(碰撞) into things. When he visited his family at Christmas time, his mother was so worried that she made him see a doctor. Hawking was sent to hospital for tests. Finally, the result came back. Doctors said they had no way to help him. He would die before he was 23.

There had not seemed to be anything worth doing. But shortly after I came out of hospital, I suddenly realized that there were a lot of worthwhile things I could do.” Hawking married, found a job at Cambridge University, and had three children. He also went on to do some of the most important scientific research.

It is said that more than four million people die each year from smoking. That number is frightening.
Yet people around the world continue to smoke. In the United States, about forty-seven-million adults smoke. This year, more than 430,000 Americans died of diseases which have something to do with smoking. The American Cancer Society(美国癌症协会)says smoking harms the body greatly. It warns that smoking even a number of cigarettes is dangerous.
It’s not easy to give up smoking. However, doctors say you probably will live longer if you do stop smoking. You will feel better and look better. You also will protect the health of family members who breathe your smoke.
There is not one right way to stop smoking, doctors say. Any way can help. You can take long walks or spend time in places where smoking is not allowed. Also, you can eat a small piece of fruit or vegetable instead of having a cigarette. The sooner you stop smoking, the more you’ll reduce (减少) your chances of getting cancer and other diseases.
