For years, it has been said that newspapers are at death's door.Every year brings more news of closing. But why is the situation so terrible for newspapers?

Newspapers have a long history. The first newspaper was printed in the 1600s. Their most successful period is in the early 20th century.

With the appearance of radio and TV, however, newspaper circulation (发行量) began to fall.(3)By the mid20th centuryradio and TV had become so popular that people no longer had to depend on newspapers for news That was especially true for breaking (突发的) news.

Afternoon newspapers were the first to suffer (受损害). After work, more and more people turned on TV instead of opening a newspaper. That was because TV could provide news happening a short time ago. It's true that newspapers couldn't compete with TV on speed, but they could provide in﹣depth (深入详尽的) reports that TV news could not.

But newspapers suffered another, heavier blow (打击) in the 1990s. With the appearance of the Internet, tons of information became free. Many newspaper readers realized that they could read news on the Internet. There seemed to be little reason to pay for a newspaper subscription (订阅).

So what does the future hold? Will newspapers die? Maybe not. Many newspapers are now making changes. Some are going digital (数字的). Some are going farther and taking the industry to places it has never been to. After all, people still want the news. And many agree that newspapers are still an important source (来源) of in﹣depth news, analysis (分析) and opinions.

(4)If newspapers disappear completelythere will be nothing to take their place

A.根据短文内容简要回答问题.

(1)What made the newspaper circulation fall?

(2)Will newspapers disappear? Why or why not?(选择一种情况作答)

B.将短文中划线的句子译成汉语.

Last month, the artist Christo opened his new art sculpture. It is made up of 7,506 colorful barrels (桶) floating on a lake in Hyde Park in London. Christo calls it The London Mastaba. It is his first major outdoor art sculpture in Great Britain. The artwork is in the shape of a mastaba. It looks somewhat like a pyramid with a fat top. The London Mastaba is about 65 feet high, 98 feet wide and 130 feet long, and it weighs about 1.3 million pounds. The metal barrels can be seen from hundreds of feet away.

    (2)

Everyone who looks at it will see something different. Many will think the barrels are barrels of oil in the heart of one of London's oldest parks. They might wonder if Christo was making an announcement against pollution. Others will see a prism or giant pixels or simply a shape. However, everyone must decide for themselves, the 83﹣year﹣old artist said. Christo said he had nothing special in mind when he created The London Mastaba. "There are no messages," Christo said. "There is something in it to discover yourself. I cannot direct you."

    "A Stairway To The Sky"

"It's created a giant invitation, like a stairway to the sky," Christo said. The artist was standing on the banks of the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park where his artwork floats. Swans are swimming nearby. Some barrels are red with a white candy stripe on the sides. Others are colored blue, purple and red. Their colors will look different as the light changes, Christo said. Their reflection (倒影) in the lake will be like an abstract painting. Abstraction is an artistic style that does not always show something recognizable or realistic.

"Not Really Sure How I Feel About It"

Many people walking in the park were surprised to see the artwork. "It's very modern, but this place is nature and historical. I don't like it here," said Yasmin KocOzcengel, who is a tourist from Turkey. Another person who took a look at the artwork was Anna Andronova. She called The London Mastaba very brave. If it weren't as brave, it wouldn't be as amazing, she said. Sheila Seffenson is an American living in London. "I'm just not really sure how I feel about it," Steffenson said. "Maybe it's a message about pollution. Who knows?"

(1)What can we learn about the artwork?

A. It is a floating pyramid.

B. It is made up of empty oil barrels.

C. It is an abstract painting.

D. It is considered as different things.

(2)Which of the following would be most suitable for ____?

A. An Announcement Against Pollution.

B. An Announcement Against Pollution?

C. A New Landmark Of The Oldest Park.

D. A New Landmark Of The Oldest Park?

(3)Which of the following words can best describe The London Mastaba?

A. Romantic.

B. Magical.

C. Realistic.

D. Mysterious.

Hi, Tom,

Thanks for your message and I am glad that you wrote to me for ideas.

I remember when I was learning English, I felt uncomfortable about speaking. I could remember lots of words and knew grammar rules, but speaking was difficult. I now feel a lot more confident about speaking, so here are some ideas that I have taken from my own experience.

Don' t worry about making mistakes.Other people will still know your meaning and they probably won't notice your mistakes.

Use every chance you get to speak. For example,it's a good idea to use only English in class and not to speak to your classmates in your own language. At home, you should also try practicing new words and grammar learnt in class.

Think about extra speaking practice outside the classroom. You can join a conversation group, such as the chat groups in the study centre. They are free to join.

Practice speaking online. There are lots of websites where you can communicate with someone from all around the world.

I hope this helps you and please come to me if you have other problems.

Best wishes,

Eliza

Do you like Physics or Chemistry? Matter (物质) is always changing, either physically or chemically. If a material goes through a physical change, it is still the same material. During a chemical change, one kind of matter changes into another completely different kind of matter. For example, when we burn wood or cook fish, materials change. People use chemistry every day in the kitchen. The food we eat has many different natural chemicals. Many of the chemicals in food are necessary parts of a healthy diet.

Much of the food we eat has been changed in some way from its original form. The changes that food undergoes may be chemical or physical. If a change does not affect the food's chemical composition, we call it a physical change. For example, melted (溶解的) cheese has gone through a physical change. It gets softer when it is heated but it is still the same type of material. Any change that changes the chemicals in the food is a chemical change. Bread contains carbohydrates, which are chemicals made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. When bread is baked (烘焙), the carbohydrates break down into black carbon and water. The carbon gives the bread a dark color and a crunchy texture (质地). The water goes into the air.

To get a closer look at the chemistry of baking, let's watch how a carrot cake is made. The main steps of baking any cake are mixing the ingredients (材料) and baking them together. In the course of making cakes, the dry ingredients are mixed first. They are flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, baking powder and spices. Flour gives the cake structure. Sugar helps to make it sweet. Salt strengthens the cake batter. Baking powder and baking soda make the cake rise.

Next, the carrots may be added to the cake. These help give the carrot cake its flavor, texture, and color. The other ingredients in the carrot cake are oil and eggs. The oil makes the cake tender and moist. Eggs serve two purposes﹣the whites help the cake to rise, while the yolks (蛋黄) give it a creamy texture. All of these ingredients form a mixture. This mixture can be separated into its different components (成分) although it is very difficult. Once the cake mixture is formed, it's poured into a cake pan and baked in an oven. The heat from the oven has caused chemical changes to take place. The cake is finished and the ingredients cannot be separated.

(1)The material doesn't change when we

A. melt ice cream

B. burn paper

C. bake apple pies

D. cook beef

(2)What's the correct order of baking a carrot cake in the passage?

a. Carrots, oil and eggs are added.

b. The dry ingredients are mixed.

c. The mixture is baked in an oven.

d. Baking powder and soda make the cake rise.

e. Preparing some dry ingredients.

f. The heat from the oven causes chemical changes.

g. The ingredients cannot be separated.

h. The mixture is poured into a pan

A. b﹣a﹣h﹣f﹣g

B. b﹣h﹣c﹣d﹣f

C. e﹣d﹣c﹣a﹣g

D. e﹣c﹣a﹣g﹣d

(3)After reading the passage, we know that

A. water and carbon can give the cake a dark color and a crunchy texture

B. people can separate the mixture of eggs and oil into different components

C. chemicals in different kinds of food that people eat are bad for their health

Looking at art should be like walking in the countryside. You may not know exactly where you are, what bird is making that strange sound, or what the hill ahead of you is called, but that's part of the fun of it.You don't need to know these things to feel the beauty of nature.

Of course, if you do know your birds, trees and local history, a walk can be more attractive. Yet such knowledge comes slowly. It is picked up through experience.A true knowledge of nature cannot just be given to you through an app on your phone.Imagine pointing your phone at the hill and getting plenty of information on screen. Would that enrich your dreamy walk or ruin(毁灭) it?

Braggarts enjoy an app that allows them to show off their knowledge, for example, about baroque(巴洛克风格的) paintings. In fact, apps in museums try to provide on﹣screen art history at once just to encourage people to read their phones instead of looking at paintings.

It is a mistaken idea that you need to be spoon﹣fed(灌输) amazing facts about a work of art in order to appreciate(欣赏) it. Our first experience of a work of art should be raw(自然状态的),unguided, and a bit puzzling, like following a path in the woods. Later, you might choose to do some personal research into the work. It can further increase your enjoyment and appreciation for it. Yet it is best done when you're away from the art itself, so that even when you return, the work still feels fresh.

Anyone who thinks knowing some dates and details makes you better understand a work of art is wrong. We all need to put aside our screens and our supposed knowledge when we look at art. Let the paintings flow in; let your intuitions(直觉) fly off. Art is a journey in the wilderness or it is nothing at all.

(1)What does the writer mainly want to say?

A. Art is best with the help of apps.

B. Art is best when hidden in mystery.

C. Art is nothing compared with nature.

D. Art is nothing when details and facts are known.

(2)The underlined word "braggarts" refers to(指)

A. people who like showing off

B. people who like baroque paintings

C. those who are good at appreciating art

D. those who are good at painting with phones

(3)What's the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A. How to appreciate a work of art.

B. How to personal research into a work of art.

C. How to keep your feelings about a work of art fresh.

D. How to be spoon﹣fed amazing facts about a work of art.

(4)what can we infer(推断) from the passage?

A. Because of apps, art will be ruined in the future.

B. A good piece of art is usually made about nature.

C. Research work and intuitions can both help understand art.

D. Museums are not supposed to allow the use of mobile phones.
