Travel Manners
Every culture has its own unwritten list of behavior that is acceptable. Every society also has its taboos, or types of behavior that are considered a violation of good manners.
The word taboo comes from the Tongan language and is used in modern English to describe verbal and nonverbal behavior that is forbidden or to be avoided. They tend to be specific to a culture or country, and usually form around a group’s values and beliefs. What is considered acceptable behavior in one country may be a serious taboo in another.
Verbal taboos usually involve topics that people believe are too private to talk about publicly, or relate to one’s manner of speaking. In many cultures, for example, it is considered bad manners to discuss subjects such as sex or religion in public. In some countries, the volume of one’s voice may annoy people.
For example, one of the biggest differences among many Western Asian, and African cultures is the use of eye contact. In the US, people make eye contact when they talk to others. In many Asian and African cultures, however, children are taught to lower their eyes when talking to their elders, or those of higher rank, as a way to show respect.
Certain gestures made with the hands can have very different meanings depending on the country you are in. Crossing your middle finger over your forefinger is the sign for good luck in many western countries. Also, in some Asian countries, moving your hands a lot while talking, or ‘talking with your hands’, is considered unsuitable.
Behavior that is acceptable and non-offensive in one culture can be highly offensive in another. When visiting a foreign country, be aware of some of the basic differences, as this will help to ensure a more enjoyable trip.

To forgive is a virtue(美德), but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.
Try the following steps:
Calm yourself. You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.
Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.
Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.
If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.
Don’t forget to forgive yourself. But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.

How to Respect Yourself
A lack of self-respect can prevent you from fulfilling your potential and developing healthy relationships. Here are some steps to help you know how to respect yourself.
__________ The qualities that we respect vary from person to person, and the way we express it varies from culture to culture. Generally, we respect people who have more experience and are more accomplished than ourselves. But there is also a basic level of respect that most people will agree is a right, and does not need to be earned. So think about what it means to respect others. Here are some widely agreed-upon signals of respect: You don’t steal from, harm, or insult them; you are honest with them; you listen to what they say, consider their opinions, and avoid interrupting them.
__________ We often do things for ourselves that we would never dream of doing for someone we care about. Whatever you believe to be respectful, apply it to yourself. Don’t harm yourself. Don’t insult yourself. Don’t steal from yourself. Be honest with yourself. Develop your own opinions and don’t be afraid to stand by them.
__________ A person with self-respect doesn’t allow others to treat them badly, and would rather not be around someone who is disrespectful. This might seem obvious, but there are many times when we accept being treated badly. When someone doesn’t give you basic respect, you need to be able to say, in one way or another, “You just disrespected me and that’s not acceptable! If you don’t respect me, I won’t spend time with you any more.” Can you say that, and mean it?
Can you turn your back on someone who’s clearly shown that they don’t respect you? Once you do, you’ll feel your sense of self-respect go up.
__________ When you make an effort to keep your body in good working order, you’ll not only feel better physically, but also feel a sense of pride. Respecting your body also means not insulting it for what it is, naturally. Make an effort to get fit and stay healthy. Focus on the things you can change and improve, and do them because it feels good.
__________ The more you know about yourself, the more you’ll see and appreciate how unique you really are. And you’ll respect yourself more. Discover your principles, personality, and talents. Stop waiting for other people’s approval and start developing your own standards.
Develop a unique and original way of expressing your opinions while at the same time being a good listener.

Dear Daddy, you stepped into my life years ago, and became my dad, a man who raised three fatherless kids and adopted(领养) another. It didn’t matter to you or us whether we were your biological kids or not—you are our dad! You did everything humanly possible for us, and you managed to have taken care of Mom, who has been sick, and the grandkids as well. Lessons we learned are love and compassion and kindness…We love you dearly. |
My dad taught me how to play basketball. He taught me how to pivot, throw three pointers, and do lay-ups and dunks. Now I am a pro (职业球员) at basketball. When I played basketball in December, I was a good guard. Although I sometimes didn’t play very well and my team lost the game, my dad always encouraged me never to lose heart. Now I have a dream that when I grow up I can play basketball on the Celtics. I love my dad! |

D |
The most important thing that my dad ever taught me was “Stick to it. Never do anything halfway”. He always told me that by doing your very best, you prove your ability, commitment and character. This advice was what I always kept in mind, whether I was removing the snow from the driveway, helping do the volunteer work in the nursing house or completing my last course in graduate school. “It shows what kind of person you are,” my dad would say. “People will remember and respect you for that.” I do remember and respect my dad’s advice, which will guide me to do anything. |
My dad has taught me many things. He has taught me love, hope, respect, discipline and the value of hard work. He has taught me never to be afraid, but when I am, his arms are always open for me to run into. He has taught me the value of a job well done. He has taught me how to ride a bike, then to drive a car. He always tells me that he believes in me and that I can manage to deal with the things around me. He is teaching me how to grow up but not grow apart. My dad is always there for me, and he has told me that he always will be. |

My dad teaches me throughout my lifetime to present day that family is first. He says, “As the father, you should put your own wants and needs aside to make sure that your wife and children have the best that life has to offer.” He did this without failing every day of our lives, without words or empty promises; instead, through sleepless nights and tireless actions always with a smile. His words always remind me what I should do for the family. I am proud to be his son. I love you, Dad. |
My dad and I have a funny company we call “Priority”. It changes depending on the household chores we’re doing. He has taught me how to take care of the pool (Priority Pools), how to program garage doors (Priority Garages), how to plan family birthday parties (Priority Parties), how to install dishwashers (Priority Dishwashers) and how to clean the computer (Priority Computers). The list goes on. I’m proud of my dad, and grateful for my time with him. We have so much fun doing projects together. |
