As a young man, Al was a skilled artist. He had a wife and two fine sons. One night, his oldest son developed a serious stomachache.Thinking it was only some 11 intestinal (肠内的)disorder, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the boy 12 suddenly that night.
Knowing the death could have been 13 if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, Al's emotional health became worse under the huge burden(重负) of his 14 .To make matters worse his wife 15 him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son.The hurt and pain of the two 16 were more than Al could handle, and he 17 to alcohol(烈酒).In time Al became an alcoholic.
18__ the alcoholism progressed, Al began to lose everything he 19 — his home, his land, his art objects, everything.20 Al died alone in a San Francisco motel room.
When I heard of Al's death, I thought that Al's life was a complete 21 .
As time went by, I began to reconsider my earlier judgment.I knew Al's now 22 son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known.I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free 23 of love between them.I knew that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.
I hadn't heard Ernie talk much about his 24__.One day I worked __25 my courage to ask him."I'm really 26__ by something," I said."I know your father was 27 _ the only one to raise you. What on earth did he do that you became such a special person?"
Ernie sat quietly and _28_ for a few moments. Then he said, "From my earliest _29 as a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ' I love you, son.' "
Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to __30_ Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind loving father, and he left behind one of the finest, most giving men I have ever known.

I suspect that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our 36 , and especially if it’s given from the 37 . When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but 38 them. Just take them 39 . Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more important than 40 it.
One of my patients told me that when she 41 to tell her story, people often 42 to tell her that they had once had something just like that happen to her. Subtly her pain became a story about themselves. 43 she stopped talking to most people. It was just too 44 . We connect through listening. When we interrupt what someone is saying to let them know that we understand, we move the 45 of attention to ourselves. But when we listen, they know we care.
I have ever learned to 46 to someone crying by just listening. In the old days I used to reach for the tissues(纸巾) 47 I realized that passing a person a tissue may be just another way to shut them 48 , to take them out of their 49 of sadness and pain. Now I just listen. When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there 50 them.
This 51 thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been 52 since I was very young at school. I thought people listened only because they were too 53 to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence often has far more 54 to connect than the most well-intentioned 55 .

Most people in the world like to enjoy nature. Travel is one of the most popular ways. Nowadays modern transportation can take people everywhere. But people who lived before the 1880s probably would not travel very far. They would not have time to travel far from their work. Anyone who travelled 36 would usually walk or ride a horse. But in Germany a man named Karl Benz had an idea that 37 the world in a dramatic way. In 1885, he made 38 . His car had three wheels, 39 most cars today. The car could only go 40 16 kilometres an hour.
At around the same time, the man 41 his first car in Detroit, America is called Henry Ford. Detroit is now still famous all over the world as the centre of American car-making.
Cars were very few and only 42 people could buy them. 43 , in England cars were thought to be 44 at that time, so for a few years someone 45 walk in front of every car 46 a red flag! This was to make sure that the car did not go too fast and hurt 47 .
In the 1910s, Henry Ford had 48 a better kind of car called the Model T Ford and he built a 49 where the cars could be made 50 . In this way the car could be made 51 and the cost was less and more and more people could 52 them. But there was still a problem 53 all the cars were black. That was because it was 54 to produce cars that were all the same color. Now, of course, you can buy cars in all 55 .

When I was a young student, a Chinese teacher told us, “If you make one close friend in school, you will be most fortunate. A true friend is someone who stays with you for life.” 36 tells us that he was right. Good friendship is just not easily 37 . It is possible that we simply do not stay in one place long enough for 38 friendship to 39 .
However, there can be 40 disagreement on the need for each of us to think carefully about the kind of friendship we want. To most of us, friendships are considered very important, but we need to have clear in our 41 the kinds of friendship we want. Are they to be close or 42 at arm’s length? Do we want to 43 ourselves or do we want to walk on the surface? For some people, many friendships on the surface are 44 enough—and that’s all right. But at some point we need to 45 that our expectations are the same as our friends’ expectations. The sharing of 46 experience 47 our tears as well as our dark dreams is the surest way to deepen friendships. But it 48 be undertaken(进行)slowly and carried on only if there are 49 of interest and action in return.
What are some of the 50 of friendship? The greatest is the attraction to expect too much too soon. Deep relationships 51 time. Another “major difficulty” is the selfishness to think one “possesses” the other, including his time and attention. Similarly, friendships 52 actions in return. In 53 words, you must give as much as you take.
Finally there is a question of taking care of. Unless you spend 54 time together, talking on the phone, writing letters, doing things together, friendships will die 55 .

That day the monkey had to content himself with the 53 of boiled peas for dinner, and I hope the 54 taught him not to be so 55 in future.

There is an old story telling about a woman whose only son died in an accident. In her 31 , she went to the wise man that is always 32 for his wisdom in her town and said, “What advice or what 33 ways do you have to bring my son back to life? I will 34 you with all I have if you can.”
Instead of sending her away or 35 with her, he said to her, “Fetch me a mustard(芥末) seed from a home that has never 36 sorrow. We will use it to drive the sorrow out of your life.” The woman went off at once in 37 of that magical mustard seed.
She came first to a splendid apartment, 38 at the door, and said in a 39 voice, “I am looking for a home that has never known sorrow. Is this such a(n) 40 that I want? It is very important to me.”

I believe being honest is one of the greatest gifts. I know they call it a lot of fancy names these days, like 36 and straightforward. And it’s still what 37 a man a good citizen. This is my code(准则),and I try to live by.
I’ve been in the taxi business for thirty-five years, 38 there is a lot about it that is not so good. Taxi drivers have to be rough and tumble(乱作一团) fellows to be able to take it in New York. You've got to be 39 to fight the New York traffic eight hours a day.
Because taxi drivers are tough, people get the 40 impression that they are bad. Taxi drivers are just like other people. Most of them will act as 41 fellows. Almost every week you read in the papers where a taxi driver 42 money or jewels or like that people leave in their 43 . If they weren't honest, you wouldn't be reading those stories in the papers. One time,I found an emerald(翡翠的)ring in my car. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of suitcases that day,so I went back to where I had 44 her off. It took me almost two days to wait for her in order to return her 45 to her. I didn't get as much as “thank you.” 46 ,I felt good because I had done what was right. I think I felt better than she 47 .
I was born and brought up in Ireland until I was nineteen years old. I came to this country in 1913 where I 48 several jobs to earn a few dollars before joining the army in World War I. After being discharged(退伍),I bought my own car and have owned one ever since. It hasn’t been too easy 49 ,but my wife takes care of our money and we have a good bit 50 for a rainy day(一时之需). In all my years of driving a taxi,I have never had___51__ with the public, not even with drunks. Even if they get a little headstrong(顽固的) once in a while,I just agree with them and then they behave themselves.
People ask me about tips. As far as I know, 52 everyone will give you something, because most Americans are 53 generous. I always try to be nice to everyone, whether they 54 or not. I believe in God and try to be a good member of my parish(教区). I try to act toward others like I think God wants me to act. I have been trying this for a long time, and the 55 I try,the easier it gets.

One cold rainy evening last October, as a medical student, I was in a hospital, gathering data
for my graduation paper.
Holding a patient questionnaire 34 some simple yes-or-no questions, I walked towards a 43-year-old patient who lay in bed alone. I was worried whether she would approve of my demands at such a late hour. 35 , she treated it with consideration. Soon I finished and prepared to leave. 36 I could stand up, she spoke up in a weak voice asking where I was from and why I was working so late in the evening.
Then she started talking about herself as well as her 37 , "My husband died about a year ago, 38 me the only breadwinner of my family. My pay as a cleaner is 39 enough for me and my three kids. I don't know what my children would be if something bad happened to me."
I didn't know what to say. I desperately tried to remember the lessons from a communication skills class I had taken years earlier, but my mind was 40.
Without realizing it, I had begun 41 her hand. Now that I didn't have anything to say, I just sat quietly while she talked. That's when it occurred to me that she was not expecting any 42 from me. She 43 wanted me to listen. All 1 did was nod my head as a way of showing my 44.
