Making friends can be difficult, especially these days with so many peer pressures. If you want to develop a more pleasing personality and make friends, become genuinely(真正地) interested in other people and show kindness. You may be wearing the latest designer label clothes, the hottest brand shoes and the coolest jewelry, but if you display sourness and selfishness you’ll have a battle ahead of you to make good friends.
Smile...smile and continue to smile. It costs nothing, enriches those who receive it, happens in a flash(闪烁)but the memory lasts forever;it creates happiness in the home and classroom. A smile can not be bought, begged or borrowed,it comes from the heart. If you want other people to like you, make the other persons feel important, and do it sincerely!
Choose your friends carefully. If others try to persuade you to smoke, take drugs, steal, gamble, fight etc...dare to say NO. Doing the wrong thing is the quickest way to lose friends, especially honest, good and upright friends.
Being mentally strong is not always easy but let me assure you that the more you practise it,the easier it becomes. Soon those who thought they were trendy will want to dress like you, talk like you and be with you because you have a personality which is different. People like being different! By being an individual with your own personality you can achieve the very best experiences in your life. You may not ever have many friends but let me tell you that it is better to have one good friend than ten dishonest friends who will stab you in the back at the very first opportunity that arises.

[1] Sooner or later everyone has to write something-a thank-you note, a report at a meeting, a complaint or an apology. If you have writing assignment(作业) in school, or if you still fear to put pen to paper, facing that empty page is almost as frightening as you are facing a tiger. How to write it? There is no mystery. Clear writing is just clear thinking. Here are some techniques for you.
[2] Thinking on paper
Sit down with a pencil and paper or at the computer screen and start outlining(概述,略述) what you want to say, why it is important, why it matters, and what its impact is on the reader. Just get the ideas down. The next step is to go back and put them in order.
[3] Writing first sentence
Try to make your first sentence catch the reader’s eyes, because ________, the reader is not going to read on. Get a good, clear lead sentence that summarizes your points and answers the reader’s question “What is in it for me?” if you can not do it in one sentence, then do it in two or three but keep them short.
[4] Remembering the reader
Short, simple words are better than long words. Short sentences are better than long sentences. Remember that the goal is to communicate, not to express yourselves. Most people are so devoted to what they want to say that they forget somebody else has to be able to read it. Too much information makes you lose readers before they get to the meat(实质) of what you want to say.
[5] Reading and rewriting
Read out what you have written loud, and listen for any awkward(笨拙的) sentences. All good writers read, then rewrite. Back off a little bit from what you are writing. It is an old standard, but if you can, write something and come back a day later.

[1]There is a sign in the subway that explains New York completely. “NYC: tolerant of your beliefs, judgmental of your shoes.” We are open to many walks of life, but your shoes … well, that’s another story. Researchers at the University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 30 percent of a stranger’s personality simply by looking at the person’s shoes.
[2]The study involved volunteers filling out a personality questionnaire and providing photos of            ______that they most frequently wear. Then 63 students looked at the photos and were able to accurately guess the volunteers’ gender, age, social status, and even whether the owner was extrovert or introvert, liberal or conservative, and their degree of emotional stability and openness.
[3]Here are some interesting findings from the study. Practical and functional shoes generally belong to agreeable people. Ankle boots belong to those with more aggressive personalities. Uncomfortable looking shoes are usually worn by those with calm personalities. Those who are most worried about their relationships wear brand new or well-kept shoes. This is because they are worried about what others think of their appearance. Liberals wear less expensive shoes. The more boring the shoes are, the harder it is for the owner to form relationships. This is because he doesn’t care about what others think of his appearance.
[4] “Shoes convey a thin but useful slice of information about their wearers,” the researchers of the study said. “Shoes serve a practical purpose, and also serve as non-verbal cues with symbolic messages. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.”
[5] The researchers noted that some people would choose shoe styles to hide their actual personality traits, but they also noted that volunteers were likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were revealing deep insights into their personalities.

Some years ago, I was hired by an American bank. I received a letter from the head of the Personnel Department that started, “Dear John, I am quite pleased that you have decided to join us.” That “quite” saddened me. I thought he was saying “we’re kind of pleased you decided to join us although I wish we had hired someone else.” Then I discovered that in American English “quite” sometimes means “very”, while in British English it means “fairly”.
So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the language and by that I don’t just mean the words people speak. It is body language, dress, manners, ideas and so on. The way people do things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures.
Some of these differences may be only on the surface—dress, food and hours of work-while others may be deeper and take longer to deal with. Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and accepting them, like the climate, while getting on with business.
Some of the differences may be an improvement. People are more polite; the service is better; you ask for something to be done and it happens without having to ask again. However, other differences can be troubling, like punctuality(准时). If you invite people to a party at 7 o’clock, your guests will consider it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in the American Midwest, an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to an hour afterwards in Italy and some time in the evening in Greece. I prefer not to use the word “late” because there is nothing wrong with the times people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country.
Why was the author unhappy as mentioned in Paragraph 1?(within 12 words)
If one wants to work in foreign countries, what should he do first? (within 12 words)
What attracts people’s attention to the cultural differences? (within 5 words)
Who are usually punctual when invited to a party the people? (within 2 words)

Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly with our eyes, sop it is often said that eyes can speak.
Do you have such a kind of experience? In a bus you may loom at a stranger, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.
The same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you may look at yourself up and down, to see if there is         ..If nothing goes wrong, you will fell angry towards others' stare at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10seconds and refuses to avert his gaze, his intentions are obvious, that is ,he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is admiring her.
However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at  the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is saying, to tell him that he is attentive.
If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to dominate you, you will feel disconcerted. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the honest communication, quite the contrary.
In fact, continuous eye contact is confined to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time, to show affection that words can't express.
Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the specific situation.

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones . They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, "Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably."
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

When you are far away from home for the first time and have a lot to adjust to,you can't do it alone. However independent you are,it is good to have a roommate during your first year.
Living with someone helps ease your loneliness. Sure it may seem appealing to be able to play your music and turn up your TV as loud as you want, but coming home to an empty room every day can be depressing. If you have a bad day, you may want to talk to someone.
Friends are great sources of venting (宣泄), but friends can't always be there. Even worse, they may be selfcentered and show no interest in your problem. It's not that roommates aren't like this, but even just small talk can help you feel better.
Having a roommate teaches you how to get along with people and settle conflict. You two should set up rules immediately and discuss what to do when there is conflict. If you two don't like each other, you still study, relax, and sleep in the same room. You must find a way to get along.
Finally, having a roommate exposes (使接触) you to different ways of living. Your roommate may come from a different city, and have different living habits. He or she also has different interests and personalities. You don't have to end up liking the same things your roommate does,but_______________________. You will be surrounded by many different people in college and have the chance to try things you never have before. Why not start learning from your roommate?
Having a roommate gives you the skills and personal background you will need to utilize (利用) when you are out on your own. Make the most of living with a stranger and besides, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to have your own room later in your college years.

Women are meant to be the experts at shopping, but new research reveals the whole experience leaves them stressed. The surprise findings show that not all women get comfort from shopping.  In fact, in a supermarket environment, one third of females feel it a burden when they do the weekly shop despite being organized and armed with shopping lists, The reason why women are more nervous in the supermarket is largely that they are rushing round trying to conduct the shopping as quickly as possible. Doing the food shop will be one item on a massive list of jobs, and something which simply has to be done at speed.  Women even admitted to having an argument with another shopper in the supermarket-either because of trolley rage, fighting over the same item or queue jumping. They can't stand feeling rushed when the cashier scans items too quickly so they struggle to get everything into the right bags.
In contrast, three quarters of men quite enjoy their food shopping experience and are happy to push their way around the aisles searching out products. Men are less forgetful about what they want to buy, are less likely to feel rushed by the cashiers and are more methodical at the checkouts. Men seem to adopt a much more laid back and methodical approach, taking their time looking for bargains and make sure they're getting the most for their money.
But the poll suggests women are the savvier shoppers—as they are less baffled by all the different brands in the shop and are more likely to ask for help if needed.

For many the idea of your dream home is not buying a bigger home, but a home that you have built by yourself. A house that is unique and fit for your tastes and your lifestyle. It sounds great but where do you begin to design your dream home? Here is a quick guide that can help you make your dreams come true.
The first step is to get an idea of what type of home you want. You can get inspiration from others. Drive around to neighbourhoods that have the styles of homes you like and take pictures. You can also cut out pictures from magazines, newspapers, or print out pictures you find on the Internet.
The next step will be to make two lists of items for yourself. The first list will be those items or features that you feel your new home must have, such as granite counter tops or a hot water heater. The second list will be those items or features that are on your wish list like a fireplace or slate floors.
At this point you will probably have a good idea of what your dream home will look like, so you will need to seek some professional help. You will need to hire an architect to put your ideas down on paper. You may need to interview a few different architects to find one that you are comfortable with. Make sure whomever you choose for final drawings has a full understanding of local building codes and zoning bylaws. In any ease your final plan will need to be approved by the city and a building permit must be obtained before any construction can begin.
It is time to look for a contractor(承包人). Whichever way you can do it in, be sure you are comfortable with your contractor and you have got references from his past clients. Remember the more homework you do in the beginning, the more enjoyable the process will be.

All of us, at some point, experience nights where we have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. The National Institute of Health estimates that one in three adults has bouts of infrequent sleeplessness or insomnia, while one in 10 sufferes from chronic insomnia. Being unable to get a good night's sleep can cause disruptions in our daytoday life. But persistent sleeplessness can lead to physical and emotional health problems.
The body needs sleep to rejuvenate itself and rebuild the cells necessary to keep the immune system strong and the brain functioning properly.  Everyone's  body  requires a  different  amount  of sleep  to accomplish these goals. The average amount of sleep needed by an adult is around seven or eight hours a night.  However,  some people can function quite well with less than that, while others need more to be at peak performance.
Sleeplessness can be caused by many different things. Most people experience sleeplessness for a short period of time due to an outside stimulus such as stress, improper diet, a poor sleeping environment or an acute medical concern such as the flu. Once the stimulus passes, the ability to sleep will usually return. Chronic sleeplessness may be caused by ongoing health concerns such as the physical pain of arthritis or the emotional pain of anxiety and depression.
Prolonged sleeplessness can have a negative effect on the way the body performs daily tasks. Those that suffer from sleepless nights may find themselves feeling drowsy or fatigued during the day.  The ability to concentrate or focus on a task diminishes and you are less mentally alert. Because the body needs sleep to support a healthy immune system, those that are sleepdeprived may be more susceptible to both acute and chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
Sleeplessness not only takes a toll on your physical self but also your emotional wellbeing. Being unable to sleep well for a few nights may only produce minor irritability. However, if sleeplessness becomes chronic, the price could be much higher in the form of anxiety, depression and possibly substance abuse. Those with chronic sleeplessness may turn to controlled substances such as sleeping pills and alcohol to aid them in their quest for a good night's sleep.
There are numerous home remedies for mild sleeplessness. Prepare your body for sleep by avoiding caffeinated drinks such as tea or coffee before bed.  Don't  exercise  strenuously  before  bedtime;  instead do something relaxing such as meditate or take a warm bath. Go to bed only when you feel sleepy and not because of a selfappointed bedtime. Finally, create a favorable sleeping environment by removing stimulants from your bedroom such as extra lighting or a television. If you still cannot find relief, it may be time to visit your physician for help. A sleep study will be done that can help to determine the cause of the sleeplessness and possible solutions.

Women make better drivers than men for many reasons. Why is that? Wouldn't you think that competing at who has better driving abilities is pointless? If you ask me, I'd like to say, men know that women are better drivers but do not have the courage to admit the truth.
Unlike men, women stop for directions when they have no idea where they are going. Women don't drive around for hours pointlessly wasting a tank of gas only to find themselves heading in the wrong direction. Have you ever been in a car with a man who is lost? He tells you to shut up when you begin to open your mouth. And every five minutes or so he takes a turn going forty-five miles per hour only to find out he's made another wrong turn.
Speeding is what men do best on the road. Traffic is not a race. There is a reason why men get more speeding tickets than women. Not because women trick to get out of tickets but only because they don't speed. Women don't risk putting their own lives and the lives of others in danger. In other words ,they have more responsibility for life.
My largest issue with male drivers is how a majority of them drive with one hand on the wheel and the other hand doing only God knows what. The seat is backed as far as possible. They're totally lost in loud music beyond a necessary level. You don't ever see women driving like that.
I feel that the above evidence more than proves my points that women are queens of the road. Oh ,men, if you want to continue criticizing women for being bad drivers, bring it on. We know you lack confidence, or else you wouldn't be wasting your valuable time making jokes about the ones you may choose to spend the rest of your days with.

[1]  Alice Munro wins the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first Canadian woman to take the award since it was founded in 1901.
[2] Munro,82, only the 13th woman given the award, was praised by the Swedish Academy during the Nobel announcement in Stockholm as the "master of the contemporary short story. " "We're not saying just that she can say a lot in just 20 pages---more than an average novel writer can---but also that she can cover ground. She can have a single short story that covers decades, and it works, " said Peter Englund, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy.
[ 3] Munro said she always viewed her chances of winning the Nobel as " one of those pipe dreams" that "might happen, but it probably wouldn't. " Munro's daughter woke her up to tell her the news. "It just seems impossible. A splendid thing to happen…More than I can say, " she said, overcome with emotion. " My stories have gotten around quite remarkably for short stories. I would really hope that this would make people see the short story as an important art, not something you play around with until you got a novel written. "

[1]Everyone wants something in life, love, money, success and so on. Yet too many people fail to achieve their goals, and nearly all of them are for the same reason.
[2]It‘s true that terrible things do happen to people during their lives, though no fault of their own,  which may make them feel upset. Generally speaking, however, getting what you really want out of life is just a matter of the following three simple steps.
[3]Firstly, you have to decide what it is you want the most. But do not make a list of wishes; try to focus on one thing at a time. If you‘re not sure about where you want to go, you‘d better think it over first and not hurry to perform.
[4]Secondly, create an action plan. This will be your map for getting from ”___________________” to ”where you want to go”. You know what you want, and what steps you are going to take to get it. For example, if you want a better job, start with a skills assessment(评价) and maybe some extra training. Then you‘ll need to sell yourself and your skills either to your present employer or to a new employer.
[5]Other goals will require a bit more thought. Some will really get you lost without a clue of how to get there. Not to worry, though, books, biographies and such, can be of great help.
[6]The third and final step is to execute. Do what you planned. Take the steps you outlined on your road map and keep going on all the time. If you run into some people who are against you, simply ignore them.
[7]Never give up the goal. Keep pushing. Whatever you do, do not lose heart until you have what you desire in your hands. Never think that you can’t turn your dream into a reality.

Ashley Power’s mother bought a computer for her when she was eight. When she was thirteen, she was surfing the Internet regularly, but she couldn’t find anywhere for teenagers to meet and talk. And one day she thought, “If I had my own website, I’d make it a really interesting site for teenagers.”
So, when Ashley was sixteen, she launched her own website, called GooseHead. She had no idea how big a success it would be, but three years later, the site was the most successful teen site in the USA! It was getting 100,000 hits every day, and Ashley had about 30 employees.
After a few years, the website closed down. Then Ashley, who lives in Los Angeles, was asked to write a book called The GooseHead Guide to Life. The book is about how to design a website and start a business. It begins with a section called “All about Ashley,” where Ashley tells readers what it is like to be the boss of a company when you are only sixteen. “I was so happy. But it was crazy in a lot of ways. I got much stressed. I mean, I was only sixteen – I didn’t even have a car! If you were sixteen and you had your own company, you’d be stressed, too!”
In an interview Ashley gave advice to teenagers who wanted to start their own business, “Just be strong and have your dreams and work hard at them. And don’t listen when people tell you that you can’t do it, because I heard ‘no’ a lot. Just keeping until you hear ‘yes’!”
