My grandfather was a wonderful gardener. As long as I could remember, he had grown a garden full of vegetables in the back of his yard. He grew different kinds of vegetables. One year he even tried pumpkins. The pumpkins did turn out well.
As children, my sister and I would spend time looking after the garden with him. We would learn about planting seeds. My grandfather would show us how the beans would climb up the fence and he built up beyond the fence to let them climb even higher. I was always surprised to see them grow even taller than me.
The pride of my grandfather’s garden was his tomatoes. Every year as soon as the tomato bloomed, I would ask my grandfather when we could eat the tomatoes. He would say, “ Not yet.”
I would ask the next week, “Can we pick them yet?”
He would answer, “Not yet.”
Finally , I would be sure that they were ripe. When so many bright red tomatoes hung on the branches, I would go up to my grandfather and ask, “ Can we pick them now?”
He enjoyed seeing my sister and I eat the tomatoes. I think the garden was my grandfather’s way of sharing his blessing with those around him. The garden always had more than enough produce for my grandparents and for my family, so he would give some to anyone who would accept. He hoped we could pass his generosity to others.
As he grew older, I would look after the garden for him. My grandfather never expected me to do all of it for him, but I could always see the pride on his face when everything was complete.

“Wow, you got an A without even studying.”
“Your drawing is wonderful –you’re my little Picasso.”
If you’re like most parents, you offer praise to your children, believing it is the key to their success. (No. 1) But according to a new study, praise may do more harm than good.
For the study, after a simple IQ test, one group was told it did really well and must be very smart. The other group was told it did really well and must have worked hard. One group was praised for intelligence and the other was praised _______________.
Asked if they wanted to take a slightly harder test, the kids praised for their intelligence were unwillingly. Of those praised for their effort, however, 90 percent were eager for a more challenging task. And on a final test the effort group performed significantly better than the group praised for its intelligence.
Many of the kids who had been labeled “smart” performed worst of all. The “hard workers” got the message that they could improve their scores by trying harder, but the “smart” kids believed they should do well without any effort.(No.2) Thus, kids who get too much praise are less likely to take risks, are highly sensitive to failure and are more likely to give up when faced with a challenge.
Tips for Parents:
Avoid labels. (No.3) Praising for effort sends the message that your child has the power to improve and change. Be mindful of labeling yourself and others.
Teach kids from an early age that the brain is a muscle that can be strengthened with practice. This sends the message that kids can directly affect their intelligence.
Parents often praise their kids to make themselves feel good, or to protect their kids from failure. But it’s very important for parents to help their kids to learn to deal with setbacks (挫折) and to help them focus on ways to improve.

The word addiction usually makes you think of alcohol or drugs, but in modern-day society we are seeing some new kinds of addictions. Some people are compulsive(难以自制的) shoppers. Others find it impossible to pull themselves away from their work. Still others spend countless hours watching TV or playing computer games
Over the years, shopping has become a very common activity. Many people enjoy going to malls or stores more and more every day, but it's more than a common hobby for some of them. They have turned into shopaholics. They are people who simply enjoy shopping and walking around spending money without being able to stop doing it. They are hooked on shopping and usually buy things that they don't need. Even though they don't have enough money, they buy everything they want.
The question is: why do they have this addiction? There isn't a specific answer. Some people go shopping when they are sad, worried, upset or lonely and they want to feel better. They use this activity as a way to forget their problems. Shopaholics say that they feel more important and better after they buy something. They also tend to have this addiction when they feel guilty.
Shopaholism seems to be a harmless addiction, but it can ___________. Some of them can be psychological. If this is the case, people addicted to shopping should go to a support group to help them break this habit. However, the process, like for most addictions, is long, and they suffer a lot. It can also cause financial problems. They just think about satisfying their feelings, so they spend money they don't have. They get deep in debt, and they can even go bankrupt and get sent to prison.

Many students find it hard to make friends when they are in high school. Keeping my suggestions in mind may give you a hand. They certainly helped me, and by the end of my three years of high school I had formed my group of friends, with whom I still keep in touch now.
Here are my tips:
Say hello anytime I see an acquaintance(相识的人).
Because I was always smiling and greeting the people I knew, people naturally thought I was friendly(though I am not naturally sociable). And high school students want to be friends with sociable people.
Take the first step.
All the girls there already knew each other-they didn't need another friend. But I did, so I had to make the effort. I had to be the first one to invite somebody to go to a movie with me, or come to my house. Once I did that they started to respond(回应) with the same thing.
Use classes to get to know people.
I met most of my first friends because I sat next to them in class. Class (before, after, or even during class time) is a great opportunity to begin a conversation. For example, ask for help about homework.
Make friends slowly.
I couldn't get discouraged when it took a while to make friends. It really takes some time to make new friends. In a word, making new friends is not easy.
Above all, remember that it can and will get better. You may have to work a little to make your high school experience a great one, but it' s really worth it!

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is one of the most famous American novels. Published in 1884, it was one of the first novels in the USA written in common, everyday language. For example, using non-standard English, Twain wrote, ‘I haven’t got any money,’ to mean ‘I do not have any money’. In this way, Twain made his characters very true to life.
The story is told by Huckleberry Finn, called Huck for short, who runs away to escape his abusive father. At first, Huck goes to a small island in the middle of the Mississippi River. There, he finds Jim, a black slave who has run away to escape slavery. The two of them stay on the island for a few weeks and become friends, but they must leave because Huck learns that people are looking for Jim. They decide to travel on a raft on the Mississippi River to reach the Ohio River, which will take them north to a state that does not allow slavery.
During their journey, Huck and Jim visit many places along the river and meet many different people. Unfortunately, most of the people they meet are not good. For instance, Huck and Jim meet a family, the Grangerfords, who have been fighting with another family, the Shepherdsons, for so many years that nobody remembers how the fight began. While Huck stays with the Grangerfords, the fighting starts again, and several members of both families are killed. Later, Huck and Jim meet the King and the Duke, two men who take control of their raft and make money by tricking people. During the confusion following one of these tricks, Huck and Jim escape with their raft.
Although the people Huck and Jim meet are bad, they are also funny. Mark Twain used humor to show readers the problems of American society in the 1800s. More importantly, despite all of the bad things that happen to Huck and Jim, the novel has a happy ending for both of them. Jim gets his freedom because his owner has died and set him free in her will, and Huck learns that his father has died, so he is also safe.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an adventurous and humorous story, and it teaches modern readers a lot about American society in the 1800s.

From the car he may see almost every types of African wildlife. Some of these are getting scarce (稀有的) because people kill them for various reasons. _______
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in not more than 15 words for each question.
①“Hello” is one of the first words we learn as babies, yet it’s one of the last ones we think to use as adults. That’s unfortunate, because saying hello is more than just saying hello. It is recognition of another’s worth. How might the world change — how might we change — if we mastered this word? To find out, I spent one month saying hello to every person I met. Here’s what I’ve learned.
②It can boost(促进)productivity. In one of the few studies ever done on this subject, Allan Allday, an assistant professor of special education at Oklahoma State University, had middle school teachers greet their students individually each morning. This exchange of greetings raised the kids’ productivity. School went from impersonal to personal, and that resulted in more class participation (参与) and better grades.
③Environments influence friendliness. One study found that people in the city were more likely to kiss one’s hands with a stranger than those in the countryside. And, researchers say, pleasant environments generally encourage more smiles and hellos than unpleasant one. My experience was similar. Whatever the reason, my urban hellos were answered far less often than my rural ones. Similarly, people in vacation spots, like the Jersey Shore, were far friendlier than those hurrying to work downtown.
④It’s a form of universal health insurance. It’s impossible to say hello without smiling. And smiling has been shown to lower blood pressure, relieve stress and boost happiness. Apparently, a smile creates a similar effect in the recipient (接受者).
⑤So maybe we can make the world a better place by saying hello to each other. After a month of doing it, I feel lighter and more connected and I have a better sense of well-being.
In the first paragraph, what does the author mean by saying “it’s one of the last ones we think to use as adults”?

【1】“Don’t stare. Chew with your mouth closed.”Manner minding is expected everywhere, at school, work, home, and even the Internet. What is netiquette? It’s network etiquette(利仪), a set of rules for behaving properly online.
【2】 It’s easy to misunderstand.
When you communicate online, all you see is a computer screen. You can’t use facial expression, gestures, or tone of voice; words are the only information. It’s easy to misunderstand others’ meanings and forget that they are real people just like you!
【3】“Look” good online.
Networks let you reach out to people you’d otherwise never meet. And none of them can see you. You won’t be judged by the color of your skin, eyes or hair, your weight, your age, or your clothing. You will, however, be judged by the quality of your writing. So spelling, grammar, and content really matter.
【4】Share expert knowledge.
The reason why asking questions online works is that a lot of knowledgeable people are reading the questions. If you ask a question, it’s polite to share the answers with others. If you’re an expert yourself, ________________. It’s a long-time net tradition, and it makes the network a better place.
【5】 Forgive mistakes.
Everyone was a green hand at network once. So when someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a spelling error or a stupid question, be kind about it. If you decide to inform someone of a mistake, point it out politely.

[1]If you can’t find your keys, ask a woman. It’s reported that females are better than males at multitasking, particularly if those tasks include searching for lost items, for example, the car keys.
[2]Researchers carried out two experiments, in which men and women have to juggle(同时做)several tasks. Examples of this include working in a busy office or cooking several dishes at once for a meal. In the first battle of the sexes, the volunteers played a computer game that required rapid changes of attention. Both sexes slowed down , but the women slowed less. This suggests that they found multitasking easier.
[3]In the second experiment, volunteers were given 8 minutes to complete a set of sums, search for restaurants on a map and work out the route they would take to search for a set of keys lost in a field. The two sexes did well on all the tasks, but the key hunt — in which the searches planned by the women were judged to be clearly superior. When it is the only thing to be done, both sexes are equally good at it. It showed that men’s ability to plan a search for lost keys breaks down, when put under the pressure of multitasking. The results suggest that women are better at multitasking than men.
[4] Women’s advantage at doing tasks has its roots in evolution. In the Stone Age, men could probably go out and hunt for food, while the women stayed at home and multi-tasked. They were always looking out for their children, as well as doing other things, like gathering fruits and doing mending and making stone tools. Men probably have somewhat more of a one-track mind.

[1] Do you remember the title of the last book you read? Are names sometimes just beyond your brain’s reach? While forgetfulness isn’t necessarily a sign that something’s wrong, it can be frustrating (令人沮丧的). But simple methods can help to sharpen your memory.
[2] Challenge your habits. Sometimes a little bit of habit changing goes a long way. For example, use the ‘wrong’ hand to do an everyday task several times a day. If you usually brush your teeth with your right hand, use your left. The brain ‘knows’ when you’re using the wrong hand. It’s that confusion that stimulates new brain circuits, as the brain struggles to master a new task.
[3] Get involved in music. Listening to music can improve your ability to concentrate and help you to remember what you’ve learnt. Some types of music actually cause brain neurons (神经细胞) to fire more quickly. If you’re really looking forward to sharpening your memory, take up a musical instrument. Whatever the instrument, learning to play will tune your brain’s ability to analyze and focus.
[4] Go out of your way to stay mentally active. What realty counts is not the amount of book learning you did at school or university, it’s how much you actively use your mind. For example, doing crossword puzzles, learning a second language or playing games can exercise your brain.
[5] ___________. Make sure that you get enough of the B vitamins in your diet. They help to repair brain tissue, and turn food into mental energy. Eat fish 2 or 3 times a week. If you drink coffee, you’ll not only get a short-term boost in your ability to concentrate but also long-term benefits as well Besides, the brain is 85 %water, so if you don’t drink at least 8 large glasses of water a day, you could suffer from memory loss.

If you are worried about things and are under a lot of stress at work or school, then you are probably not sleeping well. Worry can keep you awake, tossing and turning in bed until the early hours of the morning when you eventually fall asleep. When you wake up, you don’t feel refreshed, but tired and worn out and unable to face a new day.
Dr. Henry Winkle, in a recent newspaper article entitled Stress and Sleep, indicates(暗示、表明)that . Dr. Winkle says, “The more we worry, the less we sleep, the more we are unable to deal with stress. If we can find a way to get a good night’s sleep,” he adds, “we can often find the energy to deal with what’s worrying us.”
So, what is a good night’s sleep? Research shows that the amount of sleep which people need in order to keep healthy varies a lot. Seven hours is about the average amount, though strangely enough, sleeping longer often gives you a headache instead of making you feel more refreshed.
Dr. Winkle believes that preparing for sleeping is important. People who work late should try to give themselves a short break and do something restful before going to bed. This could be watching TV or listening to music. Doing some exercise earlier in the day should help you to feel physically as well as mentally tired. A bedtime drink can also help, but coffee or tea should be avoided as they contain caffeine and will keep you awake. “When you put the light out,” Dr. Winkle says, “concentrate on relaxing your muscles, working slowly up from your feet, and you’ll be asleep before you know it.”

[1]Although known as an extraordinarily successful businessman, Warren Buffet comes off as a pretty ordinary person.
[2]Looking back on his childhood, one can see how serious he was about making money. Buffet used to go door-to-door and sell soda pop. Later, he also worked at his grandfather’s grocery store. At the ripe age of 11, Buffet bought his first stock(股票). When his family moved to Washington D.C., Buffet became a paperboy for The Washington Post. [1]The key word is practice! Practice, Practice, Practice! There is no other way. There is no magic. The way to get better at listening to English is to listen to English. That’s the not-so-good news.
[2]The good news is there are many ways to listen and many things to listen to.
[3] Listening to English songs can be fun. But be careful! Most English songs use the language in a special way that you don’t hear every day. You don’t want to start speaking English like a poet or a songwriter. If you do listen to English songs, listen to different ones. This will help you train your ears to different voices, pronunciations and rhythms.
[4]If you can, get a copy of the lyrics so you can read them and listen to them at the same time. It is sometimes better to listen with your eyes as well as your ears---more information to help the brain.
[5]Watch English DVDs. But this time, don’t use your eyes to read the subtitles. Turn off the subtitles, because movies have so many other clues about what is happening that it is better not to use the subtitles. This enforces your ears do the work.
[6]Choose one character that interests you and pay attention to what they say and how they say it. If you can, repeat a line out loud after they have said it. Teach yourself one or more sayings, phrases or ways of talking that you will use after watching the movie. A new and growing resource of English language for listening can be found in blogs. Chinese students always complain that they’re under great pressure and don’t get enough sleep. But they may be surprised to learn that they’re much luckier than their peers (同龄人) in South Korea and Japan, according to a recently published report, conducted by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences on the physical and mental health of senior high school students in the three Asian countries.
Among nearly 6,000 high school students in the three countries, Chinese students are the tallest but poorest in physical fitness. Chinese students are on average 168.17cm, compared with 167.61cm for South Korean students and 164.70cm for Japanese students. Chinese students asked for sick leave more than students in other countries. About 72 percent of Korean students never asked for sick and injury leave during high school, compared to 53 percent for Japanese students and 45 percent for Chinese students.
As the survey presents, Japanese and South Korean students suffer more pressure. Statistics show 16 percent of students in China said they experienced mental pressure often over the past year, while the numbers in Japan and South Korea were 33 percent and 47 percent respectively. Their worries come from “study”, “friendships” and “relationship with their parents”. To go with stress, 57.9 percent of Korean students sleep the least, less than six hours a day, compared with 46.6 percent of Japanese students and 30 percent of Chinese students.
More Chinese students were satisfied with their physical appearance. In measures of selfworth, such as “I think I am valuable” and “I can complete many things”, “I won’t give up to failure”, Chinese students showed greater selfconfidence than students in Japan and South Korea and they are the happiest among the three.

[1] The Canadian scientists say that getting older really does make one wiser. The over-55s use their brains more efficiently (高效率地) than younger people, as they are much more likely to get rid of mistakes. Younger people, ________, give the impression of being sharper, simply by coming up with answers more quickly. But this may be a sign of inexperience rather than wisdom.
[2] According to their experiment on sorting words into pairs, scientists found surprising differences between the brains of the older and younger participants when they made a mistake. To the younger ones, the mistake immediately activated(激活) several different parts of the brain to help them decide what to do next. The older people, however, didn’t start thinking about what they were going to do until the game restarted.
[3] Dr Oury Monchi said, “When the young participants made a mistake and had to plan and take a new measure to get the right answer, various parts of their brains were used even before the next task began. However, when the older participants learned that they had a mistake, they decided to make adjustments(调整) only when completely necessary. The older brain had experience and knew that nothing was gained by taking action too soon.”
[4] Dr Monchi compared the results to Aesop’s fable of the tortoise and the hare, saying, “Being able to run fast does not always win the race --you have to know how to best use your abilities.” This saying is a defining characteristic of ageing. It is as though the older brain is more unaffected to criticism and more confident than the young brain. Overall, the older group, who were aged between 55 and 75, took longer to complete the game but did roughly as well as those aged 18 to 35.
