[4]If you’re unsure whether all adolescent in your life is depressed or just”being a teenager”,consider how long the symptoms have been present, how severe they are,and how different the teen is acting from his or her usual self. While some“growing pains”are to be expected as teenagers fight with the challenges of growing up,dramatic, long lasting changes in personality, mood,or behavior are red flags of a deeper problem.

Statuses(身份) are part of human inventions that help us get along with one another and determine where we “fit” in society. As we go about our daily routines, we mentally attempt to place people in terms of their statuses. For example, we must judge whether the person in the library is a reader or a librarian, whether the telephone caller is a friend or a salesman, and so on.
The statuses we take often vary with the people we meet and change throughout life. Most of us can quickly adjust our statuses that various situations or occasions require. Most of social interaction(互动) consists of identifying and selecting among appropriate statuses and allowing other people to take their statuses in relation to us. This means that we fit our actions to those of other people based on a constant mental process of judgment. Although some of us find the task more difficult than others, most of us perform it rather effortlessly.
A status has been compared to ready-made clothes. Within certain limits, the buyer can choose style and fabric (衣料). But an American is not free to choose the costume of a Chinese peasant or that of a Hindu prince. We must choose from among the clothing presented by our society. Furthermore, our choice is limited to a size that will fit, as well as by our pocketbook(钱包). Having made a choice within these limits we can make certain changes, but apart from minor adjustments, we tend to be limited to what the stores have on their racks(衣架). Statues too come ready made, and the range of choice among them is limited.
What is the function of statuses ?     (not more than 15 words)

阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到答题卡相应的位置上(请注意问题后的词数要求)。
【1】A meal in the US used to last for hours. People would sit around a table, talking, eating and drinking late into the evening. However, that just doesn’t happen any more. The average meal is 11 minutes long --- with some breakfasts and lunches lasting barely 2 minutes.
【2】But is eating at such a fast pace problem? Should we be concerned? The answer is “yes” and here are some of the reasons you should eat more slowly:
【3】Eating slowly helps lose weight. Studies show that “fullness” is a complex concept that combines the number of times you chew, the time you spend eating, the look of the food on the plate, as well as the actual amount of food you eat. Slow down and you may have a sense of fullness without eating as much as you eat fast.
【4】When you eat slowly, you end up tasting your food more. This is good because the more you pay attention to your foods, the more you’ll prefer natural foods. Here’s why: Most factory-produced foods taste great for the first 3 or so bites. After that they begin to taste uninteresting. If you slow down to chew them thoroughly, they’ll taste pretty disgusting. Natural foods, however, stay interesting as you chew them.
【5】 Eating can be a social event. Meals are a time when people gather and spend time together. Once the meal is over, everyone goes their separate ways. By taking more time at a meal, you’ll be able to talk with your friends and family more, improve relationships and feel more connected.
【6】 Eating slower gives your stomach more time to start working on the food. When you send an entire meal down your throat in 5 minutes, you may find yourself suffering from poor digestion. Instead, take 20 minutes to eat the same amount of food. Your stomach will have a much easier job. Eating slower might also result in you chewing more, giving your stomach a head start in the digestive process.
What is the main idea of the first paragraph? (no more than 8 words)

Why can eating slowly help with weight loss? ( no more than 10 words)

What is the difference between factory-produced foods and natural foods? (no more than 15 words)

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer(自动换币器) fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note—“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery” —and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery. Mr Basille always said, “delivering milk is hard if you want to do it well but I love my job.”
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.
Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch(门廊). Often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

[1]While the Internet is a great tool it also makes it easier for bullies to pick on their prey(猎物). According to the iSafe Foundation, over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying. Here is one story on how researchers are developing software to fight cyber bullies.
[2]Jeffery Michalenka learned his black belt in karate, but despite the fact he was a trained fighter he was often picked on by bullies. "Name called, teasing, when he was younger they would call him heifer(小母牛)," said Deborah Mich~denka,Jeffery's mother.
[3]As in Jeffery's case social media enables bullies to act anonymously while spreading their hatred rapidly. That's why artificial intelligence scientists at MIT are creating a software program to detect cyber bullying.
[4]"Bullies only talk about a few topics. It's usually racial or ethnic slurs(诽谤). It's things about personal appearance, social acceptance or rejection and threats' of violence,'' said Henry Lieberman, MIT artificial intelligence scientist.
[5]The researchers say subtle bullying is often hard to detect but their software can analyze sentences and determine if they are detrimental(有害的)to each gender. On the surface the sentence "you look pretty in pink" appears friendly if it is posted on a girl's wall. But on a boy's wall a cyber bully may be trying to anger the boy.
[6]"It may save a child's life and that's really what matters," Deborah concluded.
[7]Just one more way to fight cyber bullies before another child is hurt online.
[8]The team hopes social network sites will someday use this software to help detect bullying. The researchers are already working with Formspring,a social network site like Facebook. They also want the software to provide advice to the victims on what to do if they receive mean messages.

[1] Have you ever had the wish to live another 100 years or more? Experts say that scientific advances will some day enable us to live tens of years longer than what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span.
[2] “I guess we are knocking at the door of living longer,” said Michael Zey, a Montclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future. “I think by 2075 we will ____________and that’s a conservative estimate(保守的估计).”
[3]At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louris, a professor at New Jersey Medical School in Newark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology(纳米技术) make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past. “There is a great push so that people can live from 120 to 180 years,” he said.
[4]However, many scientists who specialize in aging are doubtful aboutit and say the human body is just not designed to live past about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.
[5]Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live. “It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know; could you be healthy enough to have a good quality of life?” said Leonard Poon, director of the University of Georgia Gerontology Centre. “At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all.”

Learning how to be patient with people can be challenging for some. After all, not everybody is gifted with great patience. The good news is that it is something that can be learned and eventually perfected
When the customer before you takes ages to pay for his or her groceries, you tap your foot impatiently and cough every~and then; but,the customer is still not hurrying up. It takes all of your power not to make a scene. However, if you picture that customer to be someone you like (say your partner), then you will find yourself not getting too annoyed, right? So the next time you find yourself losing patience with somebody, simply imagine that person to be someone you really, really like and your patience will extend its life.
The second step on how to be patient with people involves whistling. When you whistle a happy tune, you instantly cheer up. You can sing your favorite song if you can't whistle—it really doesn't make a difference. What’s important here is that you have done something that makes you feel good. And when you feel good, you are more likely to be patient with the people around you.  Next, when you’re stressed, it’s almost impossible to learn how to be patient with people. If you know you’re going to be in a situation where your patience will be tested, meditate(沉思)or get yourself a massage按摩)first. Don't dive into anything unless you've managed to clearyourself off negative emotions. Remember: the more stressed you are, the faster you’11 you’re your temper. The less stress you have in your life, the longer your patience.
Learning how to be patient with people is not a necessity in life. You've seen people who manage to survive day to day with incredibly bad tempers after all. But do you really want to live like they do? If, however, you want a life that has better quality than that, then just follow these steps and embrace the fact that patience is a virtue.

[1]Do you remember the title of the last book you read? Are names sometimes just beyond your brain’s reach? While forgetfulness isn’t necessarily a sign that something’s wrong, it can be frustrating(令人沮丧的).But simple methods can help to sharpen your memory.
[2]Challenge your habits. Sometimes a little bit of habit changing goes a long way. For example, use the ‘wrong’ hand to do an everyday task several times a day.If you usually brush your teeth with your right hand, use your left. The brain ‘knows’ whew you're using the wrong hand. It’s that confusion that stimulates new brain circuits,as the brain struggles to master a new task.
[3]Get involved in niusic.Listening to music can improve your ability to concentrate and help you to remember what you’ve learnt. Some types of music actually cause brain neurons(神经细胞)to fire more quickly. If you’re really looking forward to sharpening your memory, take up a musical instrument.Whatever the instrument, learning to p1ay will tune your brain’s ability to analyse and focus.
[41Go out of your way to stay mentally active. What really counts is not the amount of book learning you did at school or university, it’s how much you actively use your mind. For example, doing crossword puzzles, learning a second language or playing games can exercise your brain.

[1]Although known as an extraordinarily successful businessman, Warren Buffet comes off as a pretty ordinary person.
[2]Looking back on his childhood, one can see how serious he was about making money. Buffet used to go door-to-door and sell soda pop. Later, he also worked at his grandfather’s grocery store. At the ripe age of 11, Buffet bought his first stock(股票). When his family moved to Washington D.C., Buffet became a paperboy for The Washington Post. While still in school, he was making $175 a month, a full-time wage for many young men.
[3]From the beginning, Buffet made his fortune from investing. He started with all the money that he had made from selling pop, delivering papers and so on. Between 1950 and l956, he grew his $9, 800 to $14, 000.From there, he organized investment partnerships with his family and friends, and then gradually drew in more people through very attractive terms.
[4]Buffet applied to Harvard Business School but         , making it to be one of the worst admission decisions in Harvard history. The outcome ended up affecting Buffet’s life deeply, for he ended up attending Columbia Business School, where he studied under Benjamin Graham, the father of securities analysis who provided the foundation for Buffet’s grand success.
[5]Buffet is a person of habit—same house, same office, same city. He doesn’t collect houses or cars or works of art, and he hates companies that waste money on such goods. Instead, he has established the Buffet Foundation, with a detailed plan on how to invest his money more wisely to society.

[1]Oops! In your rush to get to school, you drop a piece of toast on the floor. Do you throw it away or decide it’s still OK to eat? If you’re like most people, you eat it. Maybe you follow the “5-second rule”, which claims foods are safe to eat,if you pick them up within 5 seconds of dropping them. But you might want to think again. Scientists now say that 5 seconds are all it takes for foods to become contaminated(感染) with enough bacteria to make you sick.
[2]Bacteria can cause many kinds of illnesses. Some kinds of bacteria can grow on food. If we eat foods on which these bacteria are growing, we can become sick. One of these food-borne bacteria is Salmonella. It makes 1.4 million people sick every year. Earlier this year, 370 people became sick after eating peanut butter that had been contaminated with Salmonella at the manufacturing factory. Salmonella are often found in raw eggs and chicken. Cooking kills these bacteria, which is why it is so important to cook eggs, chicken, and other foods carefully.
[3]Being a good housekeeper is another good way to prevent infection. If household surfaces aren’t washed thoroughly, they can support Salmonella for weeks. A team of scientists at Clemson University in South Carolina have tested the 5-second rule, using sandwich ingredients. First, they placed a known amount of Salmonella cells on three surfaces: wood, tile, and carpet. They then placed a slice of bread and a slice of bologna(博洛尼亚大红肠) on each surface for 5, 30, or 60 seconds. After just 5 seconds, both the bread and bologna picked up enough bacteria to make you sick.
[4]So forget the 5-second rule. If your toast lands on the floor, throw it away. Stick a fresh slice of bread in the toaster. And this time, be careful not to drop it!

[1]Your vacabulary refers to the words in a language you are familiar with. Your active vocabulary contains the words you understand and use in speech and in print, and your passive vocabulary includes the words you do not use but understand. Although children learn more new words than adults, the vocabulary of an adult is not fixed and can be increased. Improve your language skills with daily exposure to new words, their pronunciations and meanings.
[2]______. The more often you read, the faster your vocabulary can grow. Choose reading material that is slightly above your level and keep a dictionary with you to look up words you do not know.
[3]Find a new word every day.If you do not encounter an unfamiliar word in your daily reading, use your dictionary to search for one.
[4]Learn the correct definition and pronunciation for each new word you encounter.Pronunciation is as important as definition because in order to add a word to your active vocabulary, you must be able to use it in speech.
[5]Explain the meaning of the word so that you can connect it to something memorable.Use imagery and personal relevance(关联).If you have just learned that the word“obstinate”means stubborn and unyielding, think about the neighbor who will not lend you his car.Imagine him shaking his head, and think of him as obstinate in his refusal.
[6]Use your new word in speech and in writing.Tell a friend about your boss obstinately refusing to reschedule your vacation time.E-mail your sister about how your cat is obstinate about sleeping on your pillow. The first time you use a new word in speech it may seem clumsy and forced, but the more you use it,the more fluent you will become in its use.Soon it will be a regular part of your active vocabulary.
[7]Tell everyone you are trying to increase your vocabulary.Encourage them to ask you what your latest word is,or to ask for the definition of a new word you have used. The more you explain the meaning of a word to someone, the more likely you are to remember it.

[1] Boys whose fathers work very long hours are more likely to be aggressive, according to a new research. A study of more than 1,400 children found those boys, whose fathers worked more than 55 hours a week, were more aggressive than their peers, yet the same thing didn’t happen to daughters. What’s more, mothers’ working hours did not seem to affect it.
[2] Now, further research needs to be carried out to find out why this happens in males, and to look for ways to tackle it. In Germany, 15 percent of fathers of children, aged three and four, worked 55 or more hours a week. Dr. Jianghong Li said, “It is possible when fathers work very long hours, children are less well monitored after school, especially if mothers also work full time hours. There is some evidence young boys are less well monitored than girls, when fathers have high work related demands. As a result, it will cause more problems.
[3] The average amount of time parents spend with their children has increased in recent years, but the quantity and quality of parent-child time is still raised as a concern. Studies in the US and Australia point to a desire among parents to work fewer hours and spend more time with their children. A wish among children is that parents would come home from work less tired and stressed.
[4] The finding provides evidence to support equal opportunities for mothers and fathers to share parenting and work responsibilities. Instead of focusing on negative effects of mothers’ working hours, policy makers should pay attention to negative results of fathers’ long working hours for children’s emotional well being. Fathers should be urged not to work long hours, but to have a greater share of parenting responsibilities.

[1] Everyone knows how to spend money, but not many people know how to spend it wisely. When you learn to spend wisely, you are learning the art of saving money.
[2] Spending money wisely does not mean buying cheap goods. A pair of shoes that costs two hundred dollars is probably better than a pair of shoes that costs twenty dollars. How do you know which pair of shoes is better? For one thing, you can consider how long the shoes are going to last. If the pair of twohundreddollar shoes can last (for) five years, the average cost of the shoes per year is just forty dollars. Besides, the pair of shoes that costs two hundred dollars will be more comfortable than cheaper shoes. The pair of cheaper shoes may last only a few months and cause your legs to suffer. Why should you spend money buying pain and suffering? However, some shoes that last a very long time are very cheap. If you can find this kind of shoes, you are getting very good value for your money.
[3] When you spend money on junk food, you are using your money to buy sickness and early death. No matter how much the cost of the meal is, spending money on junk food is foolish. You will spend more money on medical services later on in life. Investing (投资) in your health means you can save money on medical costs. Many people, who live more than a hundred years old, live happily in the pink. They seldom suffer from serious illnesses. They are the ones who invest in their health and save money on medical costs.
[4] When you can treat any spending as an investment, that means you are spending money wisely. It will produce returns for you in the future. Whenever you need to buy something, please ask the question, “Is this an investment or just spending?”

〔1〕There are many useful suggestions and pieces of advice that can help one to improve English. Here are some useful suggestions and new tips to increase one’s English language vocabulary.
〔2〕Learning English vocabulary is about much more than just learning the right words. A broad grasp of vocabulary in the English language is based on understanding important expressions and “word combinations”, which means groups of words that often or always go together.
〔3〕Learning a word will not help very much if you quickly forget it. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to really make a word part of your vocabulary. Since most words are learned from how they are used in context (上下文), the more words one is exposed to(接触), The easier one will find English to learn . Keep a writing pad close to you. When you read, pay close attention to the word you do not know, write the word down and try to figure out its meaning from the context. Then  _______________________  in a dictionary.
〔4〕Remember that if you do not use English words that you have just learned in conversation or writing, you will forget them very quickly. So the best way to learn new words effectively is just by trying to use them in conversation and writing. Remember also that practice is the key to fluent spoken English.
〔5〕Building vocabulary is a life-long task. Remember, “In the beginning was the word.” Your future could depend on how rich your vocabulary is. It will also determine the quality of your communication.

[1]Having a cold is an unpleasant experience, and it is even worse when you have a cough and a running nose. Sometimes we need to see a doctor to free ourselves from these symptoms(症状), but at other times we can treat it at home. One of the ways that you can try is simply drinking lots of water.
[2] There are two reasons why drinking plenty of water will help while you are sick with a cold. The first is an important one. Being sick with a cold puts us at risk of becoming dehydrated(脱水的). Mucus(鼻涕) production and fever both cause this dehydration.
[3] The second reason why drinking lots of water will help during your sickness is that it can help thin the mucus in the chest, which in turn will make coughing it up much easier. The good news is that you can take in your water in more ways than just drinking boring water.
[4]Tea is always                      , and a good hot tea can also help loosen the mucus. Other good options include juicy fruits and soup. Chicken soup is always a good choice for sickness. One should be careful and stay away from alcohol and caffeine. One more great idea for helping with a cold is to use steam. A vaporizer(喷雾器) is a good choice, and a hot shower will help as well.
[5]If you drink around 8 cups of water a day while you are sick with a cold, you will be able to do away with that cough quicker, and maybe even get over your cold quicker. So next time you are sick with a cold and don’t feel well, drink lots of water, tea and plenty of soup.
