Directions: Read the following passage, and answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.
Elephants and people are in competition for space. In much of Africa, elephants are now put in national parks. Elephants suffered a serious and steady decrease in number in the 1970s.This was the same time when scientists were beginning to learn a great deal about elephants and their behavior. Studies through the 1980s and into the 1990s showed a lot about their sounds and methods of communication.
In Kenya alone, in the 1970s and 1980s, the elephant population decreased from 170,000 t0 25,000. The sharp drop in number was the result of poachers (偷猎者) illegally killing elephants for their ivory. The price of ivory went up from $ 3 a pound to $ 50 to $ 100 a pound. Africa became very attractive to poachers. Bull elephants carried larger tusks (象牙) , so they were more often killed. With males gone and older females killed by poachers as well, there were many young elephants unable to benefit from the wisdom of the older females and matriarchs, who lead the herds.
Kenya took a stand that international trade in ivory was officially forbidden, and $ 3, 000,000  worth of confiscated (没收的)  ivory was burned in Kenya. The following year, only 50 elephants were lost to poachers in Kenya instead of 3,000. But Kenya has the fastest growing human population in the world. People throughout Africa won’t tolerate elephants eating their crops and destroying their livelihoods. In South Africa, elephants live behind the fences of national parks. In some parts of Africa, big-game hunters pay a lot of money to hunt elephants. This keeps their numbers down, and the money goes toward conservation. In Kenya, there are some attempts at birth control to keep the elephant population in manageable numbers to reduce conflicts with people.
Faced with a growing human population, elephants are losing the battle for space. It’s unlikely, though, that they will become extinct(绝种的). They will live in natural parks that bring tourists to Africa as well as India and other parts of Asia. The money from tourism will help elephants to survive.
What’s the reason for elephant population decrease?  ( No more than 8 words)
Why were bull elephants at higher risk of being killed? (No more than 6 words)
How can we reduce conflicts with elephants? (No more than 9 words)
Why is it not likely that elephants will become extinct? (no more than 15 words)

Internet is educational .Many people think children should be allowed to surf the Internet as they wish .In this way ,they can look through different subjects on different kinds of websites according to their own interest .But in my opinion ,children should always be watched while surfing the Internet .
Many websites have information and pictures that children should not see .There are many things that children don’t understand .All of these may have some bad influence on children’s development .Also , it is dangerous to let children use chat rooms by themselves. Many parents tell their children not to talk to strangers on the street , so they should be careful of whom their children talk to on the internet, too .What’s more , sitting in the front of a computer for a long time isn't good for children’s eyes , so parents should monitor(监视) the time that children spend on the internet .
In a word ,children should be kept away anything that could be bad for them .I strongly believe that it is necessary for parents to watch their children when they use the Internet .

When e-mail first came into general use about twenty years ago, there was a lot of talk about the arrival of the paperless office. However, it seems that e-mail has yet to revolutionize office communication. According to communications analyst Richard Metcalf, some offices have actually seen an increase in paper as a result of e-mail. “Information in the form of e-mail messages now floods our computer screens. These messages can be sent so quickly that memos tend to be distributed in the hundreds. For those secretaries whose bosses ask them to print out all their e-mails and leave them in their in-trays, this means using up a great deal of paper every month,” Metcalf says.
Metcalf has found that because some e-mails get lost in cyberspace, important documents are increasingly likely to be asked by clients and colleagues to send all important documents both by e-mail and by fax. This highlights a further potential problem with e-mail in today’s offices ─it is taking up time rather than saving it. “With e-mail, communication is much easier, but there is also more room for misunderstandings,” says psychologist Dr David Lewis. Generally, much less care is taken with e-mails than with letters or faxes and the sender will probably print the document and reread it before putting it in an envelope or sending it by fax.
More worrying is still the increasing misuse of e-mail for sending “flame-mail” ─inappropriate e-mail messages. Recent research in several companies suggests that aggressive communications like this are on the increase. E-mail has become the perfect medium for conveying workplace dissatisfaction because it is so instant.
E-mail can also be a problem in other ways. Staffs all too often make the mistake of thinking that the contents of the e-mail, like things said over the phone, are private and not permanent. But it is not only possible for an employer to read all your e-mails, it is also perfectly legal. E-mail messages can be traced back to their origin for a period of at least two years, so you might want to rethink e-mailing your dissatisfaction about your boss to your friends. The advice is to keep personal e-mails out of the office.

Students in Finland won’t have to study subjects. Soon, their classrooms would resemble conferences where “topics” are discussed.
The education system in Finland is about to undergo a revolutionary and fundamental change, although it enjoys the reputation of being one of the best in the world. The education department has decided to abandon the old method of “teaching by subject.” Instead, the country will now involve the children to help them learn and question by evolving to “teaching by topic”, shared Liisa Pohjolainen, who is in charge of youth and adult education in Helsinki – the capital city leading the reform program, “This is going to be a big change in education in Finland that we’re just beginning.”
The education system, though appearing to be revolutionary, is quite logical, explained Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life. Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of bank clerks adding up figures but now that has totally changed. We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.”
How does Finland plan to apply the method of teaching by topic? Evidently all-round vocational training and accumulated skill development take up priority over “lessons.” Those in their late teens are already being engaged in what Finland refers to as “phenomenon teaching” – or teaching by topic. For example, “cafeteria services” lessons will include elements of finance, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.
Students will slowly be taught cross-subject topics which would have varying elements of multiple “subjects.” These elements will vary with the “topic” or “skill” the student is learning. Apart from the same, students will move away from the traditional sitting and evaluation techniques as well. Students will sit in smaller groups and work collectively to solve problems, all the while improving upon their communication skills. They won’t be made to sit in rows and asked questions individually to assess their progress. Instead, a group whose collaborative efforts bring out results faster will be promoted.
The education system needs a thorough reform, owing to the fact that traditional teaching techniques were based on traditional tools that were quite limited in availability and accessibility. With modern world being extensively connected, isn’t it time for the students to learn how to step ahead of mere fact-based learning that promotes memory expansion rather than mental development?
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
Finland is launching its education reform by _________.
What’s the purpose of Finland’s education reform?
What are two of the main features of “teaching by topic”?
Finland decides to reform its education because traditional teaching _________.

[1] He skips classes and talks back to teachers but he’s still smart and talented—this is the type 24-year-old Jaki Tan played in the movie Mark of Youth(全城高考), and it has won him raging popularity among teenagers. The movie tells the story of four Senior 3 students in the days leading up to the College Entrance Examination. Tan starred as Qin Peng, who is mischievous but outstanding at music and writing.
[2] “Tan brings alive this type of student who seems to exist in every class, and he makes the character so lovely,” said his fan. Just like how his big-screen character works harder on the basketball court than in the classroom, the 2010 Happy Boys fourth-place winner was not a typical good student. But when it came to music, he had passion and fresh ideas.
[3] After finishing his Senior 1 year in Shenzhen, Tan went to study in Canada. At 15, he picked up the guitar by accident when a friend invited him to learn the instrument with him. His friend __________ halfway, but Tan persisted. Throughout high school, he wrote folk songs inspired by his life experiences and performed them for students from around the world. In one song, Tan thanked his school for all the things he didn’t like about it, such as required uniforms, rules against skipping classes and how teachers made him write letters to his family about his mistakes. “Growth comes with conflicts,” he once said in an interview with Hunan TV.
[4] “For his listeners, Tan’s lyrics and melodies always bring them back to their happy memories of hot summers and carefree youth,” Happy 8 commented. As a student at University of Toronto, Tan often performed his songs in bars or on busy streets. While many people might be too shy to perform in the street, Tan believes that experience helped build up his confidence. “Don’t be afraid of losing face. It’s always better to lose face while you are learning than to lose face for life by not improving yourself,” he told Sohu Entertainment, calling this his personal motto.

It was near Christmas during my first semester teaching a new school. I love my small special class more than any group I had taught in the past. They were hungry for knowledge and I was enjoying teaching.
Other teachers had told me that our children were from poor families and not to expect any child to bring a Christmas gift. In fact, I wasn’t expecting any gifts.
Imagine my surprise when every child brought me a gift on the day before our holiday break. First, I got a much-loved stuffed monkey from a shy girl. I was told, “He is my favorite, but I love you and I want him to be with you, Miss Taylor.” How thrilled I was!
Next came a new set of Christmas tree lights that was “missing” from a mother’s cupboard.
Finally, I came to one little boy’s gift which I had never received. It was an old, dirty and broken Christmas story book. Just then I wanted to express my happiness, I was interrupted(打断) by the giver, “And see, it is new! It still has the price tag(标签).”
When other children laughed at him, I stopped them and said, “Oh, books are good in that way. The story is always new if you have not read it before. Now, Let’s share one together.” Everyone listened quietly as I read the most wonderful Christmas story of my life.
I still keep those Christmas gifts, They always remind me of my lovely kids.

Do you know when the ancient Olympic Games begin? It was in the year 776 BC. They were held at Olympia in Greece every four years, for almost 12 centuries, until AD 394.
Some of the sports from the ancient Olympics are still seen today, such as the long jump, wrestling and running.在古代奥运会上,按照传统,运动员都是男性,and they had to compete wearing no clothes. Single women were allowed to take part in their own competition, at a separate festival in honour of Hera, the wife of the Greek god Zeus. Today, both male and female athletes from around the world can take part, no matter what nation they come from.
The contemporary Olympics were first held in 1896, in Athens(雅典). It was a Frenchman, Pierre de Coubertin, who brought the Olympics back to life. He dreamt that the Olympics would make it possible for people of all countries to live side by side in peace.现在,全世界的人们都在帮助实现这一梦想。…

[1]Everyone has periods in his life when everything seems very hard, when there’s nobody to talk to and the mood is just getting worse and worse. There are some things that may help you lift up your mood.
[2]The first thing you should try is socializing and thinking positively. It is very hard, because usually when we feel depressed we lock ourselves at home and try to think about all the bad character issues we have. But if you try to force yourself and call a friend for a cup of coffee, the chances of changing your mood into a better one are very good. _____ Instead, try to think only about the bright side of your life. Don’t forget: We are what we think we are.
[3]You should also try doing something only for yourself, something totally selfish. This could be something you wanted for a long time: maybe a short trip, a coat, a ring or anything that could lift up your mood. This doesn’t have to be extravagant(奢侈的)or costly. The point of all these is being good to yourself.
[4]Giving presents to yourself can lift up your mood. What’s more, buying things to others may be a perfect way to feel happy. Think of your friends, families, relatives or even local charities, choose one person and give him a gift that doesn’t have to be something expensive or big. It may be just a little toy to your poor neighbor’s child. Making another person feel happy will make you feel good in your heart and mind.
[5]Meeting a positive person should be very useful. Just try to keep your problems off the conversation. The idea here is to get out of your shell and have some interaction. Get involved with someone else and your mind will take a turn as well.

It is natural on every student to remember the first day at school. It was my mother who first thought of sending me to school. Of course I was of the school-going age. When my mother told me that , I thought that she was a heartless woman. My mind was disturbed ( 弄乱 ) at first.. Although I had heard about school, I had not visited it earlier.
It gave me a terrible feeling of fear and anxiety as I went to school with my father. My father took me to school which was an unknown place for me.Teachers and students were strangers to me. When I entered the school, I felt nervous. It was a big building and it was calm and quiet.
It was an old and famous school in our area. My father was a student there in his childhood and youth. The headmaster was well known to my father and welcomed him with a smile. My father introduced me to the headmaster and the headmaster allowed me to attend the class. My father left me in the classroom and went away. I was about to cry.
However, the kind behavior of the headmaster and the class teacher calmed me down. The class teacher asked my name and some other questions and he patted me on the back.
After three classes there was a rest for half an hour. I rushed to the playground along with my classmates. That day I met Sandeep who became my best friend later on. The classes came to an end about 4 pm. I was not willing to return from school.
The memory of my first day at school is very pleasant and I won’t forget it forever. I feel proud when I describe it to others.

Abby and Ally are my dear daughters. Last week, we had an outing and we were really tired later that day. After enjoying good food, we headed back. Abby pushed the button as we awaited the elevator and suddenly Ally let out a sigh of disappointment.
“Oh wait, we can’t use the elevator,” Ally said, pointing to a sign near the elevator. Too tired to challenge her, both Abby and I followed her without looking around the corner to another set of elevators. “Oh, my god,” Ally said, visibly upset. “we can’t use the elevators either! They’re also reserved for the firefighters.” Abby looked at me. I looked at Abby. We both looked at the sign and then we stared at Ally to see if she was serious. She was. .
“Ally, the sign doesn’t say the elevators are reserved for firefighters,” Abby explained. “It says not to use the elevators in case of fire! With that, Ally took a longer look at the sign and actually read it instead of skimming it this time.
What’s the lesson here? You have to spend time reading signs, maps or recipes instead of just assuming you know what they say, or you might go through life climbing many flights of stairs when you could be taking the elevator.
It also got me thinking about how often we do this with reading. I wonder how many people just assume they know what a book says instead of actually spending time reading it, thus making wrong assumptions. How often have I neglected a book simply because I think I “know” what it says when I really just need to slow down, open the book, and focus on the reading?

Big storms. High waves. Technical failures. Loneliness. After battling hard times and danger for over nine months, British teenager Mike Perham made history last month as the youngest person to sail solo around the world.
The 17-year-old made the record after he cleared the Panama Canal and then sailed through the Caribbean and home across the Atlantic.
Mike is only three months younger than Zac Sunderland, the 17-year-old American boy who had taken the crown as the youngest solo around-the-world sailor in July.
The two youngsters met in Cape Town in South Africa as they crossed the globe in different directions. Mike insisted they were not rival. “No. It’s two teenagers going out there, living their dream and having the adventure of a life time.” he said.
Mike may be young, but he is no stranger to sailing adventures. He picked up the hobby at age 6 when his father took him out in a small boat on a local lake. Father and son sailed separate boats across the Atlantic when Mike was 14, making him the youngest person to cross that ocean solo. That record gave him the taste for this even greater challenge.
On the recent journey, the scariest moment for Mike came when his sailboat was hit by storms in the southern Indian Ocean.
“We were picked up by what felt like a 60-foot wave and threw down on our side at 90 degrees,” he said.
“It felt like I was going right over. Stuff was flying around and I just thought ‘Oh no’.”
At other times, he had to dive into the Pacific and fix problems. He tied himself to the boat, jumped into the water and went to work with a knife in 30-second dives underneath the boat to cut a rope away.
Mike said he felt proud that he made his dream come true. “You’ve got to have confidence in yourself that you will make it,” he said.

(1)To build an incredible and successful relationship is something like erecting a building. First of all, you should start with the idea of building such a relationship, and then you can put a solid foundation stone for that idea. Putting a strong foundation stone is very important and it keeps your building steady. Every part of that building is totally depending upon that solid foundation. So, here are the three rules to establish a successful relationship:
(2)The first rule is just having fun. Once relationship is established then the things become stable. Once it gets stable then you start feeling stifled (压抑的) and fun is no longer there in your relationship. But remember this thing is very dangerous for relationship. You can plan something great like a weekend road trip. Even you can also plan some of your favorite activities at least twice a month. Enjoy laughing with each other and try to find different ways to keep this laughter alive.
(3)The second rule is giving respect to each other equally. In relationship it is important that both the partners should deserve equal treatment. If anyone of the partners dominates to the other then such relationship is surely not going to survive for a long time. Such relationships are called unbalanced relationship and it is going to give lots of pain. So, try to give respect to each other equally.
(4)The third rule is always to be open and honest with each other. Another good and important part of any relationship is being honest and open-minded with your partner. Whenever the problem arises in your relations, honesty is very crucial. Even being open-minded with each other is a foundation to your good relationship. Honesty is a most valuable thing. If you are open and honest with each other, then problems can be very easily sorted out.
(5)You need put lots of efforts to build a successful relationship. This effort is required from both the partners. And the reward which you are going to get will be fantastic. I always do voluntary work in the hospital. As a patient visitor, my primary goal is to deliver quality services to patients and families. By providing companionship for patients in a sometimes lonely environment, I try my best to serve and help to reduce the loneliness and frustration patients may feel after staying in a hospital for a stretch of time for weeks or even months.
Every Saturday afternoon for three to four hours, with a list of patients who have requested a patient visitor service, I head up to the 5th, 6th, or 7th floor to first visit my priority patients. At the nurse’s station, I kindly ask the nurses or the medical staff about the condition of the patients on that unit and confirm that the patients would like a visitor. After receiving an update from the nurse, I gently knock on the door of the patients and enter with a friendly “hello”. Then, I introduce myself and again politely ask if they would like a patient visitor. I usually try to prepare a few starting conversation topics such as the current news, sports scores and fun facts. However, the patients usually engage me first in an interesting conversation.
When volunteering as a patient visitor, I spent a lot of time communicating one-on-one with patients. Individual patients had individual needs and possessed extraordinary personal stories. Therefore, I found every visit fascinating. From generous and kind patients, I have learned about their diseases and their course of treatment. Additionally, I learned about literature, life during the Great Depression and wilderness of Northern Minnesota. On the whole, not only did I learn about the hospital settings and system, but I learned about the diverse life of others.
Many of the patients I have visited were truly inspiring and I always admire them for their strength. Although difficult, they were often willing to share their stories of pain, suffering, hopes and optimism. I realize that I am truly grateful and honored that they would share their personal stories with just a volunteer like me.

What did the author learn from her talking with the patients? (No more than 12 words)

A decorator has decorated his new house to help his wife in her battle with dementia(痴呆).
Matt Wood recently moved back to Scotland with his wife Julie, 75, after she was diagnosed (诊断)with the illness. The couple had lived in Berkshire for 30 years but now returned to their home town, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, to be closer to their family.
When Mr. Wood, 75, was told that any big changes in surroundings could cause anxiety in people with dementia, he was worried that Julie would be upset by moving from her normal surroundings. Therefore he decorated their new house in exactly the same way as their old one.
“Julie was diagnosed with dementia in 2009, and we moved back to our hometown in May to be near family for extra support. I had a long, hard thought about what I could do to make the change as easy as possible for Julie.”
From the color scheme to the skirting(墙角线), fireplace to fittings, the decoration of the house exactly copied their former home. He also placed decorations and family photographs in the exact same positions they had in their previous home.
