Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money in order to pay the 16 tuition(学费) for my brother and me. They don’t 17 in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. My father has a bad temper(脾气); it’s easy for him to lose his temper.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt(缝被子). I 18 sat down beside her and looked at her.
“Is there any 19 between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice. My mother stopped her work and raised her head with 20 in her eyes. She didn’t answer immediately. Then she bowed her head and continued to sew the quilt. 21 at last I heard my mother say the following words:“Susan,” she said 22 , “Look at this thread(线). Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable(耐用). If life is a 23 , then love should be a thread. It can 24 be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. Love is 25.
I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her until the next 26 . At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. After they were 27, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father walk 28 on the country road. My father had never been so 29 . Along the country road, there were many beautiful flowers, green grass and trees. The sun gently shone through the leaves. All of these 30 the most beautiful picture in the world. The doctor had said my father would 31 in two months. But after two months he still couldn’t walk alone. We were all worried.
“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day. “Susan,” he said gently, “to tell you the truth, I just like 32 with your mom. I like this kind of life.” 33 his eyes, I knew he loved my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this 34 , I understand that love is just a 35 in the quilt of out life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

It was a cold winter’s night when I stopped for gas on my way home from work.I was tired and had a slight 36 .
I worked in a 37 doctor’s office and this was one of those days when the unexpected happened, making the schedule run 38 than usual. It seemed I was going to be late 39 home and my husband, being the 40 person, would be ready to pronounce(宣布) me late once again.Maybe 41 I hurried, I could still make it home.
I was heading inside to 42 for my gas when I noticed an older couple at the counter.I heard them asking for 43 to the local hospital. It was the same hospital that I had just 44 a few minutes ago.
The young man at the counter was trying to be 45 in explaining how to get there, with two other people making 46 .One of them was 47 trying to give them a whole different route back.It was then that I walked over to the couple and said, “Would you like to follow me to the 48 ?”
A look of 49 crossed the woman’s face.
“I’m going right by there,” I said, which wasn’t a(an) 50 since I had just made up my mind to do 51 that.
I got in my car and began the journey back.I was trying to watch to be sure they were right 52 me.It took only fifteen minutes to get there as rush hour traffic was beginning to 53 .I felt better than I had all day and my headache was nearly gone.
Later, as I arrived home, my husband 54 , “So you aren’t ever late any more.”
I said, “Sometimes it’s 55 to be late.”

While watching the Olympics the other night,I came across an incredible sight. The 1 was swimming and started with only three men.For one reason or another, two of them had a 2 start,so they were disqualified. That would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to 3 against.
I watched the man 4 off the blocks and knew immediately that something was wrong. Now I’m not an expert 5 but I do know a good dive 6 a poor one,and this was not exactly medal 7 .I listened to the crowd begin to 8 this poor man who was clearly having a 9 time. Finally he made his turn to start back.It was 10 .He made a few desperate strokes (划水) and you could tell he was exhausted.
But in those few 11 strokes, the crowd had changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to 12 .Some even began to 13 things like,“Come on,you can do it!”,and he 14 finished his race. The crowd went 15 .Even though he recorded one of the 16 times in Olympic history, this man gave more heart than any of the other 17 .
In a competition where athletes remove their silver medals, feeling they have 18 been cheated out of gold,or when they act so 19 in front of their competitors,it is nice to watch an underdog (失败者),a man that gave his all—knowing that he had no chance, but competed because of his 20 and the spirit of the games.
