My Teacher in the School of Life
I spent the opening day of school this year at DeMatha Catholic High School in much the same way I spent the first day of classes __1__ 30 years ago; I sat in Dr. Charles E. Offutt's British literature class, listening to him __2__ what his seniors would learn and getting them excited about the journey they would __3__, I'm principal(校长) of the school now, but for a few minutes I was back in 1975, __4__ what the future held. I have been learning from Dr. Offutt for 30 of the 51 years he has been teaching at DeMatha. When I first came back to DeMatha to teach English, I worked for Dr. Offutt, then department chair. After several years, I was __9__ department chair, and our relationship changed __10__. People say one man's trash(垃圾) is another man's treasure. That comes to me as I the house purchased in 1962 by my parents. My mother passed away in 1996. My father left the house my sister and me when he died a few months ago.
After Dad was , we looked around the house where we grew up and that Dad loved so much. At first we felt so all the stuff(东西) left. Like so many of their generation, my parents everything. And like many in my generation, we faced anxious about what to abandon and what to keep.
As we started throwing out old phone books and every medical bill from every my parents ever saw, I also many hidden treasures. Mom's pocketbook was in their bedroom closet, which had everything in it, her hairbrush with hair, as if she were still here. And Dad, who was a World War II veteran(退伍兵) and a world traveler, everything ----- from little spoons from all over the world to every letter he wrote to his parents while in the . The letters he wrote during the war his thoughts as a young man. Later, in the basement, I our old kitchen table, which brought back of my parents and sister and me having breakfast together.
I'm realizing all these things my parents' life journey. Each time I go to , I find something that reminded me of my childhood or teaches me something about my parents I knew. , from the shabby furniture to all the hidden treasures, means more to me than all the money in the world.

Sometimes your weakness can become your biggest strength. ____ the story of a 10-year-old boy for example , who decided to study judo (柔道) with a judo teacher despite the fact that he had his left arm because of a car accident .
The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand , , after three months of , the teacher had taught him only one move.

, his opponent made the biggest mistake : he dropped his guard . Instantly , the boy used his move to throw him down . The boy had the tournament .
On the way home , the boy gathered to ask the teacher what was really his mind. “ Sir , how did I win the tournament with only one move ?”
“ You won for two reasons,” the teacher answered . “ First , you’ve almost one of the most difficult throws in all judo. Second , the only defense (防御) for all that move is for your opponent to take hold of your left arm..” The boy’s biggest weakness---- the loss of his left arm, had become his biggest strength.

They call themselves “The Soul Knights(骑士)” and come from different universities in Guangdong Province.
During their summer vacation, the team, consisting of five male and two female students, more than 3,000 kilometers from Guangzhou to Beijing. It took them days to complete the journey.
The Soul Knights have a noble , which is to advocate civilized travel by taking photos of graffiti(涂鸦) by tourists.
“When we heard that a Chinese tourist wrote his name on an Egyptian temple, it made think a lot. We wanted to use photos to everyone how important it is to protect historic relics,” says Zhang Zhihao, 22, the team’s captain.
On their trip, the team had a clear of duty. Some provided medical care, some were fund, and others updated the team’s micro blog.
Cycling is a great way of enjoying the landscape, but it’s . On the way they passed through many cities heat waves with temperatures well above 40 degrees. They rode about 20 kilometers per hour. They got up at 6 am, departed at 7:30 and at noon to cool down. Sometimes they borrowed sheets of cardboards from restaurants and slept trees.
After cycling for one month, the team arrived in Beijing, their destination. it wasn’t the end of their journey yet. The team a small exhibition on the Great Wall of China, one of the country’s most visited attractions, to show everyone the they had taken of graffiti in various places.

Growing up in my Grandma’s house as a boy was an experience that would shape me for the rest of my life. We were poor in everything but . yet I learned so much about life there. My Mom, Dad, Grandma, two , and I were all into a home made from two old shabby cars. Karen, Judy and I were the last ones back in the school room after lunch and all of the other sixth graders were already playing outside.
