“My name’s Jim Shelley and I’m an addict(有瘾的人)…”
With these words I began to 36  the problem, the problem of my telephone addiction. I used to call people  37 , from the moment I woke up to the time I went to sleep. I 38   to be phoned, I wanted to phone. Just one more call.
It started socially-a few calls each day. It seemed 39 , just a quick chat. Gradually though, the 40    got worse. Soon it was 41  use, until, finally, addiction.  And it began to affect(影响) my 42 . During the day I would disappear for 43  call. If I couldn’t make a call, I spent the whole time waiting for the phone to ring. Getting more and more 44 , in the end, I would ring someone, then someone else, 45 myself just one more call.
I was phoning people and 46 messages to make sure 47 calls would see me through the day. I used to arrive at friends’ homes and before the door was closed, go straight for the phone with the 48“Is it OK if I just use the phone…?” At work, I became 49  when my fellow workers tried to 50  me from using the phone. And one day I hit my boss (with the phone). Finally, the police caught me 51  a phone box that had taken my last one pound coin, and I was 52 to see a psychiatrist(心理医生).
I haven’t 53  a phone in the house for three weeks now, and it’s several days 54  I used a phone box. I try not to watch TV because there are 55 people on it making phone calls. My name is Jim Shelley and I am an addict.

The ringing of the phone runs through my head, telling me someone needs help. I pick it up and    1   the routine, “Teen Lifeline, this is Amber.” About 45 minutes later I hang up, feeling pleased because I’ve helped another teen. Volunteering at Teen Lifeline has helped me realize how to deal with my own    2   and help others.
“My mom is always fighting with me. I want to run away.” Some teens feel their    3   is a prison, rather than a place of shelter and safety. They feel parents are only there to make their lives    4  . We try to help the teens realize the danger they could be in    5   giving them advice. All we can do is to ask questions. We also try to find out where the teens would go and how they would survive. We give them a phone number if they     6   don’t want to live in their “prison”.
“I don’t want to    7   any more” is something we hear, and suicide (自杀) calls are some of the hardest to    8  . We try to discover why they want to take their lives and how serious they are by asking them to rate it on a scale of one to ten. One means they are    9   suicide but haven’t decided how, and ten means they are always thinking about it and have a    10   . We ask them to make a promise that they will not hurt themselves. And sometimes we ask for their telephone numbers    11  we can call back to make sure that they are okay.

When I was a law professor, a student reported that I made an error in grading his exam by giving him too many points. He was   36  , and after thanking him for his honesty, I changed the grade in my   37  . His beaming (欢笑的) face turned to shock. “You’re   38   my grade?” he said angrily. “I would never have come in   39   ……”
He didn’t finish the   40  , but it was obvious that his display of honesty was   41  . He thought he’d have it all—praise and the higher grade.
Several colleagues thought I should have let the higher grade   42   because all I’d accomplished was to discourage him from being   43  in the future. And every time I tell this story some people agree with this   44  .
But I can’t see how I could give good reason for worsening my   45  in grading by undermining (损害) the honesty of all my grades by failing to   46   an error. The grade itself would be a dishonest   47   of his knowledge and it would have been   48  to other students. How could I   49   give a student a gift of an unearned grade?
I know  50   reporting an error in one’s favor is unusual, but, like   51   too much change, it’s clearly the right thing to do. People of character, those with real honesty, hate to give up  52_ as much as anyone else. The difference is that for them a good conscience and reputation is  _53  enough to give reason for the cost of doing the right thing.
Perhaps lowering the student’s grade did   54   him from being honest in the future, but bribing (贿赂) him to be honest so that he does the right thing when it’s cost-free would have _55 him even more. The duty to be honest is about right and wrong, not risks and rewards.

In Britain, people have different attitudes to the police. Most people generally    1   them and the job they do-although there are certain people who do not believe that the police should have the power that they do.
What does a policeman actually do? It is not a(n)   2 job to describe. After
all, a policeman has a number of jobs in one. A policeman often has to control traffic, either on foot in the center of a town, or in apolice car on the roads. Indeed, in Britain, he might be in the Traffic Police and spend all, or a lot of, his time   3up and down main roads and motorways. A policeman has to help keep the   5 , too. If there is a fight or some other

We expect the police to solve crimes, of course; so an ordinary policeman,
9  he is not a detective(侦探), will often have to help   10 and arrest criminals.
And who do we call when there is an emergency-an air crash, a   11 , a
road accident, or a robbery? We call the police. So a policeman has to be   12  to face any unpleasant emergency that may happen in the   13 world.
The police do an absolutely necessary job. They do it   14  well and I
support them, but I do not envy policemen. I do not think that I could  15  do
the job of a policeman.

In this modern world, we rush around all day, doing things, talking, sending and reading messages. We are always on, always connected, always thinking, always talking. There is no 36  for stillness.
And when we are 37  to be still because we’re in line for something, or waiting at a doctor’s appointment, or on a bus or train, we often  38  something to do. Some will play with mobile devices, other will read something. Being still isn’t something we’re 39.
This comes at a   40  : we lose that time for  41  , for observing and listening. We lose peace.
And   42  yet: sometimes too much action is worse than no action at all. You can run around crazily, but get  43  done.
Take a moment to think about  44  you spend your days. Are you constantly rushing around? Are you constantly reading and answering  45  checking on the news and the latest stream of information? Are you always  46  through your schedule?
Is this how you want to spend your  47  ? If so, peace be with you. If not, take a moment to be   48  . Don’t think about what you have to do, or what you’ve done already.   49  be in the moment.
Then after a minute or two of doing that, consider your life, and how you’d  50  it to be. See your life with less move anent, less doing, less rushing. See it with more stillness, more consideration, more  51  .
Then be that vision.
It’s pretty simple: all you have to do is sit still for a little bit each day.   52  you’re gotten used to that, try doing less each day. Breathe when you feel yourself moving too  53  . slow down. Be present. Find happiness now, in this moment, instead of   54  for it.

I’m an operating engineer, running crane(起重机) in New York City. I was in the countryside, playing golf when we got the call that a plane had   36   the World Trade Centre. We checked out of the hotel immediately and started   37   our way downtown. When I got home, I called the rescue center and they told me to come   38   and get on the   39   list.
The next morning I went down to the   40   at about 5 A. M., and four hours later I   41   the call to come down to West Street. I called my wife and told her not to   42   me, and that I would stay in   43   with her. I took the subway. It stopped at West Fourth Street, so I had to   44   the rest of the way.

Then I 55  a little bit, thinking about what we should do next. As we started again we knocked into a fire chief officer and we asked, “What can we do to help you?”
