Most people have a cellphone(手机). When you are walking on a busy street, you will see many people speaking on their phones. Many people say they can’t imagine how they live without a cellphone.
Cellphones play an important role in our daily life, such as keeping in touch with others, calling home or the police if there is any emergency. Although cellphones can help us a lot, we must think of others when we use them. Unfortunately, some people do not consider others when using their cellphones. For example, some cellphone users speak too loudly and discuss personal matters in public places. Some people make phone calls in the cinema. Some people talk for a long time on the phone while they are driving on the busy road. Someone’s cellphone will ring during an important meeting. Many people complain about these bad manners. In their opinion, cellphone users shouldn’t disturb others when they make a call.
Then how to use a cellphone politely in public? The following rules will help you. When you’re in a meeting, watching a movie or having a lesson, you’d better turn off your cellphone. When you get a call and you’re with friends, try to make the call as short as you can. If you are waiting for an important call, then make sure that you tell others about this at the beginning of a meeting. It’s rude to scream(尖叫声) or shout on the phone. Make sure you will be heard only by the caller but not by the others around you. Besides, if possible, find a quiet place where you can talk in private.

It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers (祖先) had lived in the same way for centuries.
Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frogs’ legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.
This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was to catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent to the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn’t last long.
The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if (好像) the crops(庄稼) were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and there seemed to be more insects around lately.
The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money they’d just had to buy pesticides (杀虫剂) and medicine. Soon there was no money left.
Then the people realized that what was happening. It was the frogs. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, soon there were more and more insects. They were doing harm to both crops and people.
Now, the people are still poor. But in the evening they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of night now have a much deeper meaning.

The expression “down to earth” means being open and honest. It is easy to get on with some one who is down to earth. A down-to-earth person is the opposite of someone who acts important or proud.
Down-to-earth people could be important members of society. But they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. A person who is filed with his own importance and pride is said to have his nose in the air.
Americans use another expression that is similar in some ways to down to earth. The expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality(现实). He may have dreams, but he does not allow them to have influence on his understanding of what is real.
The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds. Someone with his head in the clouds is a person whose mind is not on what is happening in real life. Such a person may be called a day-dreamer.
When we have both our feet on the ground, and when we are down to earth, we do not have our noses in the air. We act honestly and openly to others. Our lives are like the ground below us— solid(牢固的) and strong.
