Cows that are named and treated with a “more personal touch” can increase milk production by up to 500 pints a year.
The study, by the university’s School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, involved(包括) 516 farmers across the UK.
The study found farmers who named their cows got a 54% higher production than those that did not give their cows names. Dairy farmer Dennis Gibb said he believed treating every cow as an individual(个体) was very important.
“They aren’t just our means of making money. They’re part of the family,” he said. “We love our cows here and every one of them has a name. All of us regard them as ‘our ladies’ but we know every one of them and each one has her own personality.”
Dr Catherine Douglas said, “What our study shows is what many good, caring farmers have long since believed. Our data suggests that UK dairy farmers regard their cows as intelligent beings(智能动物). They are able to experience a range of emotions(情感的领域).”

Bad days happen to us all. Often a day that starts out bad just continues to get worse. Sometimes there’s a “domino effect(多米诺效应)” with bad events. For example, you sleep through the alarm, so you’re stressed. And you will sit in the bad traffic, which will also make you late for work, etc.
How can we turn a bad day to a good day? Here are some ideas that have worked for me:
Smile a lot
Smiling a lot will help you feel relaxed. Research has shown that smiling produces three useful chemicals which make us feel good.
Talk to a good friend
Keeping bad or unhappy things in your mind is not a good idea. Talking to someone who cares and listen really does help us feel better, too.
Concentrate on your good things
It’s hard to concentrate on how bad things are when you’re concentrating on how good things are! Think of 10 or more things you’re thankful for, and you’ll achieve a whole new outlook(人生观) on your day.
Get some exercise
If you can, go for a walk. Exercising will help you feel better. Excising can get your day back to be normal again.
Make the day a challenge
If you make yourself think of the day as a challenge, you’ll start to do all the things you can to make your day better.

There was once a farmer who had a fine olive orchard(橄榄果园). He was hard-working, but his three sons hated farm work. When the farmer was dying, he called the three sons to him and said, "My sons, there is a pot (罐子) of gold hidden in the olive orchard. Dig for it, if you want it."
The sons tried to get him to tell them in what part of the orchard the gold was hidden; but he would tell them nothing more.

What do people do with their old, out of date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know how to deal with them. Many old computers are put away. Many more are simply thrown away as rubbish.
Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(产品). Dell, Hewlett Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers of their own brands.
In some countries, laws have been passed, too. Computer companies have to pay for collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay for the cost. That will encourage them to make computers which are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升级).
Yet many people are throwing away good computers, while others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations are working on this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers. These repaired computers then go to schools, charities(慈善团体) or people who need them. So I had studied for about two hours the night before. After reviewing it for some time, I had started to understand it, so then I closed the book and _________. However, it was not until midnight that I fell asleep. The next day, when I got the test, it might as well have been written in Serbian (which I don’t know how to read). I tried my best to work out the hard problems, but the numbers I came up with were strange. I sat back on my chair and looked for any possible answers, but I could not remember anything or think correctly. I started thinking about my dad coming home from work to find that I failed the test …
“How could you have failed the test? I am certain that nobody else in the whole class got as bad a grade as you did!”
Naturally I didn’t want that to happen. My dad was also really busy at work at present, so I was afraid that this might make him mad. When feeling hopeless, I noticed that my table partner was writing fast on his test. I could see smoke rising up from how fast he was writing. I was attracted to look over at his test, but then the many bad results I had heard about cheating (作弊) came into my mind. I reasoned that if I started cheating now, it would be hard to give up that habit during high school. In the end, I decided not to copy his answers, and got a B- on that test. Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable(一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers.
Many guests like the idea because they don’t have to bring their own. But if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring these things of your own. That’s because some hotels in Beijing have no longer provided guests with these disposables (一次性用品). Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It’s a waste of natural resources (资源) and is very bad for the environment.
In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of lunch bowls every year!
Plastic can take 100 to 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw away, the better environment we will have.
So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again. Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life:
Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones.
After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then use it over and over again.
Do not use paper cups.
At your school canteen (餐厅), use your own bowls and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
根据短文内容,判断正(T)误(F)。
