His sister Jane went with him. As he dug, she stood near him and talked to him. She held the box of the seeds in her hand. As Jane spoke, she let the box of seeds fall on the ground. The lid ( 盖子) of the box came off and all the seeds fell out.

Poor Jane was a good, kind girl. She was upset about what she had done and told Fred that she was very sorry. But Fred would not speak to her.

"O Fred!" she said, "Why don't you speak to me?" Fred replied, "I wanted to wait till I could count to ten."

"Count to ten!" said Jane, "What do you mean? Why did you want to count to ten?"

"Oh," said Fred, "Aunt once told me to count to ten before I spoke, if ever I felt angry. I know that I am often angry with you, and I want to do the right thing this time."

"O Fred, how good you are! It was very careless of me to let the box of seeds fall but I have picked them all up again. Here they are."

The seeds were put into the ground, and day by day, Fred and Jane came to watch them grow. At last, a lot of small green leaves appeared above the ground. They soon grew larger and had pretty flowers, making the children very happy.

How has technology made your life easier? When you go to a shopping mall, you can enjoy free Wi﹣Fi there. When you want to take a taxi, you can book one with your phone. In fact, all of these things can be seen in a smart city.

The idea of a smart city was first suggested by tech company IBM in 2010.Generally,a smart city is a city that uses digital technology, such as 5G network and the"internet of things", to save money and energy, and make our lives more convenient.

Cities like Boston, Amsterdam and Copenbagen are already using smart technology to improve public services. In the US cities of Boston and Baltimore, smart dust bins can sense( 感知) how full they are and tell workers when they need to be cleaned. In Amsterdam, traffic is monitored and changed according to real﹣time data collected from sensors around the city. There are fewer traffic jams.

Smart cities will allow us to save energy. By using sensors and 5G networks to check the usage of water, gas and electricity, city managers can find out how to use these energy better. For example, water and gas pipes(管道) could remind repair workers when there is something wrong. Air pollution could be more closely monitored, too.

What's more, telehealth is used with the help of 5G. Telehealth means caring for patients from far away when the provider and the patient are not in the same place.

One form of this is video meeting with a doctor in real time, the same to a WeChat video call. It will also give older people or those living in the countryside an easier way to see a doctor. There are many exciting apps for 5G tech in medicine. One of them is far﹣away operations. In March, China's first 5G﹣based brain operation was done by a doctor in Sanya,Hainan, who operated on a Parkinson's patient in Bejing. In August, China Daily reported that robots in Beiing performed three operations in Xinjiang,Tianjin and Zhangjiakou at the same time.

Of course, it will take time to build the smart cities of the future. But since we've already seen successful examples, it won't be long until more cities join in. Tech Republic believes that by 2050, about 60 percent of people worldwide will live in smart cities.

根据上文内容判断正(T)误(F)

(2)From the passage we learn about three fifths of cities will be turned into smart cities by 2050.

(3)Because of 5G networks and sensors, workers can check and monitor public services in time in smart cities.

(4)People who live in the countryside can see a doctor by telehealth.

According to a 2018 study from San Francisco State University, nearly 2. 4 billion people around the world used a smartphone in 2017. By the end of 2019, more than a third of the global population will be using a smartphone.

However smartphone technology can be a double edged sword On the one hand, it sends us unlimited amounts of information. On the other hand, using a smartphone may become an addiction.

Erik Peper and Richard Harvey are both health education professors at San Francisco State university. They led the study. Peper explains that smartphone addiction forms connections in the brain that are similar to drug addiction. And these connections form slowly over time. Also, addiction to social media may affect our emotional state. The two professors asked 135 university students about their habit of smartphone use and their feelings. They found that students who used their phones the most reported higher levels of feeling lonely, depressed and anxious.

Peper and Harvey do not blame users for their technology addiction. They believe it is the tech industry's desire to make more money that is to blame for the technology addiction. The researchers warm that workers in the technology industry know how to control our brains and turn us into addicts.

But the researchers say that we can limit our brains to be less addicted to our phones and computers. Erik Peper suggests timing off our phones before we sleep or do something important. The researchers also suggest taking control of when and where you answer texts or emails. You do not need to answer them all. And you certainly don't need to answer them as soon as you get them. They also suggest putting limits on the time you spend on social media. If you want to catch up with friends on Facebook, set aside a small amount of time to it.you should focus on important tasks and do not allow technology to disturb you.

A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night′s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off﹣ if it is milked from a cow at night.

Researchers have discovered that" night milk" has more melatonin(褪黑激素),which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and less worried.

In the study, mice were fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night by researchers from Seoul, South Korea.

Those given night milk, which had 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less worried than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.

Night milk quicken the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

While the effect of milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin medicine has been suggested to those who are trying to fall asleep at night.

Studies have also showed that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because there is calcium(钙)in it, which helps people to relax.

Sometimes, when you worry that you may fail an exam, you end up failing.Or during a seating arrangement (安排) in your class, when you are afraid to sit next to someone you don' t like, you end up sharing the desk with him or her.

This is what Murphy' s Law tells us: If things can go wrong, they will go wrong. But is it true?

Of the studies about Murphy' s Law,the most famous one is the buttered toast (烤面包片)phenomenon (现象): One toast with butter falls,it lands butter﹣side down most of the time.

To prove this,Robert Matthews did a lot of experiments with more than 1,000British school kids in 2001.

In the first experiment, each student put a piece of buttered toast on a plate, let it fall off 20times and noted which side it landed on.Of almost 10,000experiments,toast landed butter﹣side down 62percent of the time.

But you may ask: Is it the butter that plays a role? Here comes Matthews' second experiment.

This time, instead of butter, the toast had a letter "B" written on one side.It still landed 58 percent of the time on the B﹣side.

This proved that Murphy' s Law is true: If the toast can land butter﹣side down,it will do so.

Matthews did another experiment. When students threw the toast from a height of 2.5metres,the toast landed butter﹣side down only 47percent of the time.

"Toast lands butter﹣side down because humans aren' t tall enough to let it land any other way," Matthews said.

Are you happy most of the time?Or do you easily get angry sometimes?Everyone has a different temperament(脾气).It is usually believed that both genes(基因) and environment may influence people's temperament in different ways.Scientists have found that the season of the birth also plays a role.

Scientists from Budapest,Hungary, studied 400 university students. In the study, the students needed to finish some questions to know which of four kinds of temperaments they most had. From the questions, scientists found that the students always answered something like "My mood(情绪) often changes for no reason."and" I love to deal with new projects, even if it is risky."These answers were then connected with their birthdays.

They discovered that people born in summer easily change between sad and happy moods compared to people born in winter. Those who always feel positive are mostly born in spring and summer.

The study also found that those born in fall less probably had a mood of depressionwhich may easily drive them to cry, while those in winter were not easier to be angry.

Scientists said that this was probably because the seasons had an influence on certain chemicals in the human body. And the chemicals are important to control people's moods even in adult life."It seems that when you are born may increase or decrease your change of developing certain mood disorders."scientist Xenia Gonda told the Telegraph.
