Reading is getting more popular among young Chinese. A new survey says that 85% of young people in China read at least 1 book last year. The number of young people who are reading has been rising in recent years, especially for teenagers, who read an average(平均) of 11.5 books.
The data(数据) shows that teenagers spend much more time reading from school textbooks to some other reading materials, such as novels, e﹣books, magazines and so on. But younger children (ages 2﹣8)are mainly reading for fun. Compared with the past, the time teenagers spend on pleasure reading has dropped.
When it comes to technology and reading, the surver suggests little. It does point out that many parents control the time of electronic reading, mainly because of worring about increased screen time. However, most Chinese parents are helping theie children to develop a reading habit. They are served as examples for their children. More than 70% of Chinese parents spend at least 20 minutes a day reading to their children aged 0 to 8 years old, and visit bookstores with them an average of three times a year. Data shows that kids and teens who do a lot of reading, compared to those who don't like reading, have more books in the home, and more books brought for them. Their parents read more often, and would like to spare time to read with them.
When was the last time you read a book? If you're one of the countless people who don't develop a habit of reading, you might be missing out. Everything you read fill your head with new bits of information, and you never know then it might be useful. The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are to deal with any shallenge you'll face. Remember that although you might lose something else, knowledge can never be taken away from you.
Now open a book, and feed your soul.

When I was in the middle school, I seldom raised my hands to answer questions in class. And I found lots of my classmates were just like me. When the teacher asked a question, I always lowered my head because I was afraid that the teacher saw me.
One day, in a foreign language class, Mr. Black gave us a lesson. He wanted us to be active in class, so he asked us some questions, but no one answered."At the beginning of the class, let me tell you a story." He said.
"When I came to the United States to study, the university often invited famous people to make speeches. Before the beginning of every speech, I found an interesting thing. The students around me always took a cardboard folded (折叠) in half, wrote their names in bold (粗体) with the most eye﹣catching color, and then placed the cardboard on the seat.So when the speaker needed the answers from the students,he could see and call a listener' s name directly."
"I couldn't understand that. My classmates told me the speakers were all top people who meant chances. When your answer was to their surprise, it meant they might give you more chances. In fact,I really saw a few students got great chances because of that."

Our class had a weekly class meeting this week. We talked about how to deal with lies, hoates (骗局) or rumors(谣言). Here are the stories some students told.
Zhang Wei: Yesterday my friend Jim went to school without his homework. He told his teacher that his dog ate it. It was just an excuse, he made it to cover the fact that he didn't do his homework. The teacher knew about that and made him stay to finish his homework after school. Sometimes we think we can avoid trouble by making excuses when we do something wrong, but we're really making the things worse.
Chen Ping: Last week I got a menage. It said, "A little girl called Julia has got brain cancer. The girl will get three cents from America Online each time this message is forwarded(转发). So please be kind and forward this to everyone you know. If not, you will have bad luck for a year." In fact, it is just one of the silly chain letters to cheat you and waste your time.
Xu Yan: A big earthquake hit Ya'an, Sichuan on April 20th. The earthquake was strongly felt by people in Chengdu. A rumor said Chengdu would be hit by a bigger earthquake in the coming days.
For the next several days, thousands of people camped outside their houses at night because of fear. Besides, many people rushed to buy food, water, medicine and so on. Some businessmen used people's fear of earthquake to help sell their goods at higher prices. Of course, nothing happened in the end.
(1)What's the weekly class meeting about?
(2)Why didn't Jim take his homework to school as a matter of fact?
(3)What does Chen Ping think of the chain letters?
(4)Where did many people in Chengdu camp at night when the rumor came?

Hopes, ambitions(抱负), dreams. How many of yours will you achieve? When you look back at your life in the future, will you have good memories of all the things that you did? Or will you regret all the things that you didn't do?
Of course, there's no easy road to success, but one thing is certain: success won't come if you don't do anything. So how do you do it? This four﹣step model will help you to make your dreams come true.
Step 1:
What would you like to do? Write down all your ambitions, They may be very general, such as I would like to be fitter. I want to be famous. or It would be nice to have more friends. Or they may be more specific, like I've always wanted to play a musical instrument.
Step 2:
Now you need to do two things:
1.Choose one or two ambitions. If you try to do everything, you won't do anything.
2.Set a time limit(限定). This is very important, because you will have a goal and you will also know when you have reached it.
So,for example,I would like to be fitter in Step 1 now becomes I will be fit enough to join a half﹣marathon race by the end of August.
Step 3:
Now that you' ve made your choice, what are you actually going to do to achieve your goal? So, in our example, I will be fit enough to join a half﹣marathon race by the end of August, becomes I'm going to join a running club. or I 'm going to go jogging three times a week.
Step 4:
This is when you change your intentions(意图) into specific actions, Prepare to do something at a specific time. If you don't do this, your dreams and plans will just stay as dreams and plans. So now I'm going to join a running club, becomes I'm meeting the president of the Cheetahs Running Club on Monday evening at 5:30.
Don't let your ambitions die. Follow this four step plan and make your dream come true.
A. Change I would like to…to I will… B. Change I did…to I do… C. How to be successful D. Change I'm going to…to I'm doing…on…at… E. Think about your ambitions F. Change I will…to I'm going to… |
Hello and welcome to "Words and Their Stories". We will research into some commonly used words and expressions. As with other languages, American English is rich in expressions that come from animals. Today we will talk about the wolf.
Wolves are important animals in the traditions and stories of America. Before the Europeans arrived at north America in the 1500s, to native (土著的) Americans, wolves often meant being brave.
However, in English, wolves are not to be trusted. Perhaps wolves attacked too many people or ate too many farm animals. Whatever the reason, wolves were killed in many places. So many died that they almost became endangered. They also became known as bad animals.
To begin with, there is an expression lone wolf. If we call somebody a lone wolf, he isn't a bad person, but he may like to do things by himself. In fact, he sometimes makes you think he doesn't want to be around people because he dislikes them.
Now, let's move on to the home. Parents tell their children not to wolf down their food. In other words, the child eats too quickly and without care. And if someone says a child was raised by wolves, that child has bad manners and is behaving like a wild animal.
A wolf call is the noise made by a man to show that he likes the way a woman looks. But a wolf call is not a nice thing. These men sound rude. And trust me, most women really hate wolf calls. So, they don't help a man in the game of love.
By the way, there is a popular expression about wolf from a very old story: a wolf in sheep's clothing. A wolf in sheep's clothing describes someone who acts and looks nice on the outside but is bad on the inside. It tells us not to be fooled by appearances.

Do you want to improve your physics and chemistry grades? Well, maybe you should first lean something about the struggles(奋斗)of great scientists.
The American Psychological Association did an interesting study. More than 400 students from schools in New York City took part in it. The students were divided into three groups. Group I read a typical textbook that describes the achievements of great scientists. Group 2 read about those scientists' personal struggles. For example, as a Jew, Einstein(爱因斯坦) ran away from Nazi Germany to avoid persecution (迫害). The last group read about the scientists' intellectual struggles, such as Marie Curie's failed scientific tests. These stories about struggles also told students how the scientists dealt with these obstacles(障碍).
The students took a science exam before the study. After the six﹣week study, they took another Scientists found those in Groups 2 and 3 improved their science grades. Students in Group I didn't see a grade increase. Some of them even had lower grades after the study.
The study was led by Xiaodong Lin﹣Siegler, a teacher at Columbia University.According to Xiaodong, kids often think Einstein was truly intelligent. They believe they will never match him. Many of them fail to realize that any success requires a long journey. Along the way, there are many failures(失败).
Students who read the struggle stories more probably said that great scientists were like themselves. The "great minds" also had to overcome obstacles to achieve success.
Xiaodong says today's science textbooks fail to bring science to life. As a result, students seldom regard science as part of their everyday lives. Instead, they just see a long list of facts that they have to remember. Xiaodong thinks textbooks should include more stories about how great scientists had to struggle to succeed. And students should focus more on how these scientists dealt with the obstacles they met along the way.

Have you ever paid for educational podcasts (播客) or live videos? Ask some people and most of them will say yes. "Pay﹣for﹣knowledge" has been more and more fashionable these years. The contents of these "pay﹣for﹣ knowledge" products are from language learning to gardening or baby﹣caring. Everything you think of can be found online at this moment. "Pay﹣for﹣knowledge" is on the rise (兴起).

With a fast network and a smartphone, anyone who has passed the identity (身份)check can be an online teacher, and anyone with an online account can buy "pay﹣for knowledge" products that he or she wants at an affordable price. Second, people are afraid to miss any information. On one hand, people hope for more useful information. The industry of "pay﹣for﹣knowledge" has proved to be lucrative. It promises possibilities of turning information into money. It is good for the development of our country and it can help sellers make lots of money. Besides, buyers can enjoy self﹣growth from it.What's more, this is a reflection (反映) of respect for knowledge and talents.

For another, a large number of customers buy them just for showing off. In fact, those who have really had self﹣growth after buying online courses may be the kind of people who need them least. In other words, with or without these courses, they can make it anyway, because they are those who have the ability to learn by themselves.
In general, the best is the one that suits you most."Pay﹣ for﹣knowledge" may be used as a good start for self﹣ growth. Be careful! Otherwise, your dream of success may not come true.

For years, psychologists(心理学家) have been against giving children prizes or money for their performance in school."Outwards"prizes, they say,can undermine the joy of learning for its own good and can even lead to cheating.
But many economists(经济学家) and business people disagree, and their opinions often become popular in the educational market place.Prize programs that pay students are underway in many cities. In some places, students can bring home hundreds of dollars for, say, taking an Advanced Placement course and having high grades in the exams.
"Whether such efforts work continues to be a debate(争议),"said Barbara Marian,an assistant professor of education at Pennsylvania State. She is against using prizes as encouragement.Among parents,it often leads to very hot discussion. And in public education,a new focus on school reform(改革) pushes researchers on both sides of the debate to make more efforts to get data(数据) that may provide information on when and whether prizes work.
"We have to get beyond our biases(偏见),"said Roland Fryer, aneconomist at Harvard University who is planning and testing several prizeprograms."Luckily, the scientific method allows us to examine most ofthose biases and let the data do the talking."In the cash programs being studied,Roland Fryer and other economists compare the schoolperformance of groups of students who are paid and students who arenot. In the study, they find that the students who are prized get highergrades on the SAT and go to better colleges than those who are not.
However, many psychologists believe that early data can be one﹣sided.Research suggests that prizes may work in the short term but havebad influences in the long term.
"Are they highly interested in what they are doing?Or does it feel like hard work? The same prize program might have different influences ondifferent kinds of students,"said Kirabo Jackson,a famous psychologist at Cornell University."The higher the prize is,the more harmful the result might be."

Yang Yu, 14, of Jilin, hasn't adapted (适应) himself to the changes in his classroom since the first day of this term: teachers now hold classes with a computer and screen. "Instead of writing on the blackboard as before, they click the mouse and show us the Power Point (PPT) slides (幻灯片) on the screen. Sometimes, there is not even one word on the blackboard after a whole class," Yang said. "I'm not quite used to the multimedia (多媒体) class."
More and more middle schools in China now use multimedia in class. Teachers put their courses on a computer and show their lessons with a PPT. To make the lessons more interesting, they play animations (动画) and movies.
Hu Wei, an English teacher in Sichuan, thinks multimedia class seems to be more interesting than traditional classes. His students practice their oral English by following music and animations on a computer. "It helps them speak English bravely and actively," Hu says. "Besides, it's also a helpful tool for teachers because showing PPTs saves us more time than writing notes on the blackboard."
However, multimedia class makes things more difficult for students like Liu Yifang, a 15﹣year﹣old Beijinger. She can't take all her notes as before. "There are no words on the blackboard, but many on the screen," Liu says. "Besides, my teacher speaks so fast that I can't catch up."
Liu thinks it is not the best way to learn. "For me, I like the old way. I agree that the multimedia is helpful, but so is the blackboard," Liu says. "If teachers can use both tools properly in class, I think that will be really good for everyone."
(1)What equipment (设备) do Yang Yu's teachers use in multimedia class?

Mandarin Chinese is spoken by the largest number of people in the world. It is also one of the languages that matters the most to our country's future. If the United Kingdom wants to remain competitive in the world, we do need far more of our young people leaving school with a good commandof Mandarin Chinese," Miller added. "We hope that our young people could be given the chance to study the language. We want them to be fluent in both spoken and written Mandarin. The Mandarin Excellence Program will help us do this. It will not only open the students' eyes, but also give them a great advantage when they enter the world of work."

Some parents are used to doing almost everything for their children. They see their older children as babies all the time! It can be a very common problem in China, because most parents only have one child in China. Some parents care so much about the safety of their children that they are afraid to let them go anywhere or do anything by themselves. So their children fail to learn social skills and become more dependent(依赖的)on them!
In fact, no children really enjoy being looked after by their parents all the time. No parents would be happy knowing that. Because of too much care, their children don't know anything about the world. Children need their own time to grow into adults and to learn how to deal with problems. Too much care damages their fun when they are growing up. And when suddenly they can't depend on their parents, these children will be in a big trouble!
It's nice that parents show their care to their children. It's nice that children know that their parents' care is out of love. And it will be nicer if the children let their parents know how much love they really need and how much love is too much.
