In China, writing brushes, ink sticks, paper and ink stones are called the Four Treasures of Study.Among the high﹣quality (质量) treasures, the writing brush produced in Huzhou, the ink stick produced in Huizhou, the xuan paper made in Xuancheng and the ink stone made in Duanxi are the best﹣known.
The writing brushes can be used to draw the pictures on painted potteries (陶器).They are mainly made of the hair of animals. Those made of wool are called yanghao and those made of the weasel's (鼬)tail hair are called langhao. Their artistic effects (效果) in writing and painting cannot be copied by any other pens.
The ink stick is the pigment (颜料) used in writing and painting. The ink stick produced in Huizhou is of high quality. A story goes like this: Two famous skilled men Xi Chao and his son produced a kind of high﹣quality ink stick. As a result, the Emperor Li Yu in the Southern Tang Dynasty agreed to give them the family name"Li", From then on, the fame of the Li Ink Stick was widespread. In the Song Dynasty, its producing area was changed into Huizhou, and it was then called the Hui Ink Stick.
Paper is among the four great inventions in ancient China. The famous xuan paper appeared in the Sui and Tang dynasties. In Xuanzhou, Anhui Province where the xuan paper is produced,it's said that Cai Lun's pupil Kong Dan took the job of producing paper but failed to make perfect white paper. Later he happened to see the ebony (檀木) in the rivers. It was wet with the water and turned white. Then he used the bark (树皮) to produce the world﹣famous xuan paper.
The ink stone was already very popular in the Han Dynasty. The Ming and Qing dynasties saw the appearance of the Four Famous Ink Stones一Duan Ink Stone, She Ink Stone, Tao Ink Stone and Chengni Ink Stone. They can not only be used in writing and painting but also for admiration.

We wake up very early to go to school, maybe even earlier to meet with a teacher, complete our extracurricular(课程以外的) activities, come home to have a quick dinner, talk for eight minutes with our parents and do homework until we fall asleep. But then we remember. We have to look at the American College Test(ACT) exercises one more time. Half asleep, we run downstairs to get the ACT book, and start studying. After this we finally get to turn off the lights and drift away to sleep. And then six hours later, we do it all over again.
In my health class, my teacher told us that teenagers need at least eight to nine hours of sleep each night. The sad truth is, with so much to do every day, high school students cannot keep to this sleep schedule(安排).
Let me ask you all a question: Doesn't it seem more humane(人道的) to give a teenager perhaps two hours of homework each night? This would allow us to have the eight to nine hours of much needed sleep. Or does it seem better to pile students with five hours of work a night? It leaves us very little time to relax, therefore reducing the time that we can sleep.
In my opinion, the present structure(结构) of the junior year of high school doesn't work well. Junior year of high school is a time for growth. By this time many students have the ability to think creatively, and solve challenging problems. Homework is important for a student's growth. But do we really need to spend countless hours a night doing it? Too much homework can only lead to too little sleep and too low an ability. I do think it is time to change the structure, so that we sleep at home, and learn at school.
(1)In the first paragraph the writer gives .
A. a picture of the present daily life of high school students
B. an example of an ideal daily life of high school students
C. a reason for high school students to live a busy daily school life
D. a suggestion of what high school students should do to pass ACT
(2)From the last paragraph we know that the writer thinks .
A. Junior year of high school is the most important growth period
B. challenging problems are needed for a teenager's growth
C. the ability to think has nothing to do with homework
D. the present structure leads to students often sleeping in class
(3)Why does the writer write this article?
A. To prove the role of enough sleep in teenagers' growth.
B. To complain about the problems in the system of the ACT.
C. To ask for a change for less homework and more sleep.
D. To discuss the relationship between sleep and homework.

Many kids do housework such as doing the dishes, making the bed,and folding the clothes. In exchange, they get some money or other computer time.
Paying kids for housework is one of the most popular topics, especially at a time when everyone is more careful about money. Some parents think since adults are paid to do their jobs,we should pay kids for everyday housework.
But some people don't think kids should get rewards(报酬) for doing housework.Susie Walton,an expert, believe that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn't worth doing unless you get something in return."Running any kind of housework is a team effort,"Walton said."A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and families decide how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like what they want."
Other people believe that getting a reward encourages kids to do housework, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to get money. There are also apps(程序) that gives kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed(兑现) either online or in the real world."Our goal is to give kids lawful power so they can get rewards,"says Chris Bergman."And kids need rewards to help encourage them."

From an early age,we were taught that if we wanted to be successful,we had to study hard and get good results at school. In fact, good students may just end up doing jobs they don't like, and some even lead an unhappy life. Why is it like that?
In some parents' eyes, school grades matter most for their kids.In reality, there are many things to consider besides the school subjects, for example, how to be a happy person, what to do to keep healthy, and how to get along well with others. That is to say, school is not just enough if you want to have a great life.
Doing well in school is different from doing well in life.Studies show that people who failed at school may not end up failing in life. You may have already known that some famous people, like Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs, didn't do very well at school or even failed to finish school. In fact, there are a lot more than just the big shots who are successful in life without finishing school. They seize (抓住)every chance to learn and finally make it to the top.
Life is really a long lesson,so long that you can't define(界定)a person's success by just one section (部分)of it.If you have already finished school, keep learning because what you have learned at school will never be enough to live a satisfying life.If you are still studying, whether you are good or bad at school, don't take your school results too seriously as long as you have put your heart into it.Keep learning to make the most of your talents(天赋).That's how you can live a happy and successful life.

You've been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you're a reader, you have another way to learn words. What should you do when you come to a word and you think you don't know what it means? (1)
Say it
First, sound it out. Then say it to yourself. (2) .Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don't know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read ﹣ you have the word!
Use context
If this doesn't work, take the next step: look at the context ﹣ the other words and sentences around it.Read this sentence:When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway.(3) Rain and in the doorway might give you helpful information.
(4)
If the context doesn't help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know? These can help you understand what it means. If you don't know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a mine is a place underground where people get coal and other valuable things. A lot of times, ﹣er at the end of a word means"a person who does something".So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
Look it up
If the three steps above don't work, you can look it up. (5) ﹣either a book or online.
Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don't know.

Iyehezkiel Parudani says blind people should not let their physical disability influence their dreams. In 2008,he got a chance to study at the University of Texas. Two years later,he got a master's degree in course development there.
"In the US,if I go to the university to study, everything is available﹣like e﹣books,Braille books. Here in Indonesia, you know,it's difficult to find a reference book in e﹣book or in Braille. We have to make it ourselves. In the US,I can move wherever I want because everything designed is really accessible for people with blindness."
Eha Lestari, one of his star students, says learning English has changed her life. She has already traveled to the US with the help of an Indonesia﹣U.S.program."I study English because I love English very much.I want to be a translator because I want to go to the other countries and then I want to meet some people from around the world."
Like her classmates,Eha loves to sing. Here, music is part of daily life.Even the students who do not study English can sing some American pop songs, such as Stand By Me,"Stand by me.Please stand, stand by me.Stand by me…"

Your brain controls everything you do.It makes it possible for you to think, learn, create and feel;to blink (眨眼)and breathe and for your heart to beat﹣this fantastic control center is you brain. It is so amazing that a famous scientist once called it"the most complex (复杂)thing we have yet discovered in our universe".
Can this small grey organ (器官),which weights less than one and a half kilos, really do so much?Amazingly, your brain contains about 100 billion neurons (神经元)﹣it would take you over 3000 years to count them all.Believe it or not,the activity in your brain never stops.Your neurons create and send more messages than all the phones in the world. And although one neuron creates only a little electricity, all your neurons together can producce enough electricity to power a light bulb (灯泡)."
So exactly how fast does your brain work?Well, imagine this:a bee lands on your foot.Neurons in your skin send this information to your brain at a speed of more than 240 kilometers per hour.Your brain then uses other neurons to send the message back to your foot to shake the bee off quickly. These neurons can send this information at more than 320kilometers per hour.No computer has your brain's unbelievable ability to deal with the amount of information coming from your eyes, ears and other sensory organs.
But how does your brain allow you to learn things that you will use in the future? The structure (结构)of your brain changes every time you have a new thought, remember or learn something. For example, riding a bike seems impossible at first, but soon you are able to do it.How?As you practice, your brain sends"bike riding"messages again and again.Soon, the actions are learnt and Yuri are able to ride a bike easily from then on.

"All our class must hand in compositions tomorrow. We must write 12lines at least. But I can never write one.I'll have to go to school without a composition, for I won't copy one from a book,or ask you or papa to write one for me."
"That's right,"said her mother."You'll be happier with a poor composition,if it's your own, than with a fine one written by somebody else. But cheer up.Run into the garden and play.I'll call you in half an hour.Don't think about your composition now.Just have a good time."
It seemed just a few minutes to Susie before she heard her mother calling her.She went into the house immediately﹣her hands full of sweet flowers, and her face red with exercise.
Then her mother asked her to sit by the window with a nice piece of paper and a pencil, and write something about what she could see."Never mind your composition; do this to please me,and we'll talk about that later."
Although Susie thought her mother's request was strange, she knew she always had a good reason for everything she did.So she did as her mother requested.
As she looked out,she first saw the western sky and some bright, sunset clouds."Oh,mother, what a sunset!"
"Don't talk.Just write."
The pencil began moving rapidly across the paper. She wrote about the sunset clouds, the look of the distant hills, the streets, the river, the garden with its flowers, and the birds flying past the window. She forgot all about the terrible composition!
Just as she had reached the bottom of the page, her mother came in and said with a smile,"Well,Susie, how does that composition come on?"
"Composition! You told me not to think about it,and I've never thought of it once.I've had such a nice time writing about what I could see from the window."
Mrs.Smith took the paper and read what Susie had written. She said,"There,Susie, that's a very nice composition, really."
"A composition!Is that a composition?"Susie asked in surprise.
"Yes,my dear, and a very good one, too,if we find a title for it,"replied her mother. Then she added,"I'm sure it will please your teacher,as it does me.You see,it's easy enough to write a composition if you have anything interesting to write about."

A team is a group of people with a common goal.A school's football team has two goals. One goal is to win. That is what the team wants to do.The other goal is to build character.Character is what a person values, how a person gets along with others. That is why schools have football teams. They want to help students build good values.
Each team member builds character. They learn to cooperate (合作).They learn to make good decisions. They work hard. They practice every day. They learn to follow the rules.
Each team member has a position (位置).Each position is part of winning. No one player has the ability to win the game for the team.Only if the team works together does a team win.People often say,"There is no I in TEAM."
Whether the team wins or loses,at the end of the game they congratulate the other team. That is called sportsmanship. While they fight to win during the game,it is just a game. They cannot be angry with the other team.If they are, they'll hear from their coach.
makes sure the team reaches the school's goal. The coach cares about the whole team. The coach gives each player advice. When the team wins, everyone celebrates. And the coach is glad. But after the season is over, the coach is still happy. The coach gets to see the players as they go to school every day.The character they have built is part of their success in school, too.
Some coaches say that if you go into a classroom at their school you'll be able to tell the players. It is not that they are bigger than the other students. It is the ones who are helping other students work.Teamwork is part of their lives.
