We have been used to wearing masks(口罩) in public since February.About 300 million masks are used and then thrown away every day in China. Where do these masks go? You might think they just go in a rubbish bin. But that's just the first stop on the masks' journey.
After the masks are thrown into the bins, rubbish trucks empty the bins and take the rubbish to landfills(垃圾场) Next, the masks will be taken to rubbish incinerators(焚化炉) and burned.
Burning masks might not seem to be very good for the environment. Won't it cause pollution?
The answer is "no", according to China Daily. The main material of most masks is polypropylene(聚丙烯). It's non﹣toxic(无毒的) After burning, it changes into water and CO2.In fact, burning the masks can bring some benefits(益处). The process of burning the rubbish can produce electricity. Burning one ton of rubbish can produce more than 400 kilowatt hours(度) of electricity. Some people make a prediction that there will be 162,000 tons of used masks in
China this year. Burning all of them can produce more than 64 million kilowatt hours of electricity.
This is enough to make an electric car drive about 370 million km, which is 9,250 times as long as the earth's equator.
At last, the slag(残渣) from burning masks can be recycled to make bricks(砖块) or fill the roads.

March 16 is International Sleep Day. Studies have shown that a good night's rest helps us stay healthy, both mentally(精神地) and physically(身体地). Sleep is probably the best tool we have for memory and learning. A good night's sleep helps to learn better.
But what about getting rest during the middle of the day? Short periods of sleep after a mid﹣day meal, we call it napping(午睡), may help our brains work better.
Past studies have shown that napping can help babies and young children learn better. And napping can help brain performance in older adults. Taking a nap may also help this group of peoplefight off age﹣related memory loss. As we all know, the older we are, the more memory we will lose.
The study found that people who took an hour﹣long nap did much better on mental tests than those who did not nap. The hour﹣long nappers also did better on the tests than those who napped for shorter and longer periods. In this study, it seems that the most effective(有效地) nap lasted for about an hour, but not much longer. Keep in mind, however, that these are the findings for those over the age of 65.
And there is a little difference between the old and young people. Doctor Michael Twery notes that an hour long nap may be too long for young, healthy adults. And 30 minutes is enough to remove the pressure to sleep and will help them feel more awake(清醒的). If they nap longer, they will get trapped into(受困于) deep sleep, which can be hard to get out of.
If you have trouble falling asleep at night, limit(限制) your daytime nap to under 45 minutes. Also nap before 3 p.m. in the afternoon.

When people talk about air pollution, they are usually thinking about outdoor air 1 . But do you know that there is 2 air pollution inside homes, offices, hotels and other buildings? The air in your home can be 2 to 100 times more polluted than the air outdoors! In fact, some American doctors say that 50% of illnesses have 3 to do with polluted indoor air.
A lot of pollution comes from indoor activities 4 smoking and cooking. As most people 5 about 80-90% of their time inside buildings, it is important to take indoor air pollution seriously, too.
Air pollution influences our health 6 . When the air is polluted, not only young children and old people suffer from it, 7 people with health problems suffer as well. Indoor air pollution can 8 people's eyes, noses and throats. Air pollution, both indoor and outdoor, can also lead to lung cancer(肺癌)and heart disease! In the great London fog in 1952, 4,000 people died in a few days 9 the pollution! 10 is said that half a million young children and women die each year in India because of indoor air pollution!

More than 50,000,000 people live in the rainforests of the world and most of them do not hurt the forest they live in. They eat the fruits that grow on the forest trees, but they do not cut them down. They kill some animals to eat, but they do not destroy them.
When we cut down the rainforests, we destroy these forest people, too. In 1900, there were 1,000,000 forest people in the Amazon forest. In 1980, there were only 200,000.
The Yanomami live along the rivers of the rainforest in the north of Brazil. They have lived in the rainforest for about 10,000 years and they use more than 2,000 different plants for food and for medicine. But in 1988, someone found gold in their forest, and suddenly 45,000 people came to the forest and began looking for gold. They cut down the forest to make roads. They made more than a hundred airports. The Yanomami people lost land and food. Many died because new diseases came to the forest with the strangers.
The Yanomami people tried to save their forest, because it was their home. But the people who wanted gold were stronger.
Many forest people try to save their forests. Chico Mendes was famous in Brazil because he wanted to keep the forest for his people. “I want the Amazon forest to help all of us-forest people Brazil, and all the Earth,” he said. A few months later, in December 1988, people who wanted to cut down the forest killed Chico Mendes.
In Borneo, people were cutting down the forest of the Penan people to sell the wood. The Penan people tried to save their rainforest. They made blockades across the roads into the forest. In 1987, they closed fifteen roads for eight months. No one cut down any trees during that time.
In Panama, the Kuna people saved their forest. They made a forest park which tourists pay to visit.
The Gavioes people of Brazil use the forest, but they protect it as well. They find and sell the Brazil nuts(坚果) which grow on the forest trees.

When Oakland High School in California moved into a new building, the students and teachers noticed a strong smell. Then almost half of the students began to have a headache and a cough. Experts (专家) came to find the cause of the sickness. Finally, they discovered that the air in the building was not safe to breathe. They were surprised to find out that the desks and chairs in the school library caused the trouble. These desks and chairs were made of particleboards(合成板). This kind of board is cheap. It is made of very small pieces of wood held together with a chemical (化学物质). This is just one example of a modern problem that is most common in cities—indoor air pollution(污染).
People have worried about air pollution for many years, and the government has spent lots of money trying to clean up the air of big cities. But now we found that we are still breathing unhealthy air. A study shows: Indoor air pollution is almost two to five time(倍) worse than outside pollution. So remember to open the windows and don’t stay too long in modern buildings with windows closed.
Many students and teachers _________ after they moved into the new building.
A were very happy and excited B. didn’t feel well C. felt tired because of hard work
The experts came to Oakland High School for _________.

What’s the main idea of the passage?
A Never move into a new building B. We shouldn’t buy cheap desks and chairs
C. The indoor air pollution is a big and common problem.
After spending years searching for a planet with life, scientists may have found one. In September 2010, a team of US scientists discovered an Earth-sized planet called Gliese 581g. It has a surface temperature neither too hot nor too cold for liquid(液态)water. Scientists think there is a chance that the planet could have life.
The planet Gliese 581g goes around a star called Gliese 581, which is about 20 light-years from Earth. That is about 194 trillion(万亿)kilometres -500 million times farther away from us than the moon.
A spacecraft traveling at a one-tenth of the speed of light would reach Gliese 581g within about 220 years. A human can’t live that long, but robotic explorers could make the job easier. However, our fastest spacecraft don’t come anywhere near that one-tenth light-speed mark.
At present, scientists don’t know what the surface might be like on Gliese 581g. What they know is that the planet is at the sight distance from its star to have liquid water. It’s also at the right distance to have an atmosphere that could protect the water if it is on the surface.
Although spacecraft won’t be getting there anytime soon, one way to look for life on Gliese 581g is to turn our radio telescopes(望远镜)towards the planet and search for radiation(放射). By studying the radiation, scientists would find out about the chemicals(化学物质)around the planet and discover it Gliese 581g has an atmosphere. If it has one, studying the atmosphere would give us a good idea if the planet has life or not. But it’ll probably be many years before we can do this properly.
