It started 30 years ago with a squirrel.A few months after I had moved into a downtown(1) ,my next﹣door neighbor,Nicole Figaro, knocked, asking for help with a squirrel that had gotten into her flat.
I frightened the unexpected (2) away and made a new friend.Soon Nicole was inviting me over for dinner or (3) home﹣made food at my door. When I went to my beach house,Nicole helped (4) my mail and water my plants. And when she traveled as a flight attendant,I did the same for her.Wherever she went, she'd (5) to bring me wonderful gifts, but her smile has been the greatest of all.
In 1997,I had a lovely child and it was Nicole who took care of me and him.Years later,I returned the favour.I helped out when her husband was sick, (6) her and giving her support.More and more,we drew inspiration from each other.
(7) ,the pandemic hit.My husband was out of work and my son couldn't be back to Britain because of the virus.I was (8) about them.Nicole helped my family to prepare for the pandemic and shared necessities with me.Without her,I couldn't go through(9) times.
A(10) might separate our flats and masks can separate the viruses, but nothing is able to separate our hearts.

The Picture of Peace
When Mike was seven,he knew his dream was to be a photographer. He kept working on it for years.Recently,he was trying to take a picture of a sunset(日落) to enter the school (1) competition.
"Mom,it has been cloudy these days.I don't think I can get this picture!" Mike complained.
"Why not use one of your photos on the computer?" suggested Mom.
"I can't﹣the rules say the photos have to be taken with a traditional camera. We hand in a roll of film,it gets developed(冲洗胶卷) ,and we(2) one photo for the competition. "
"Why is a sunset so important?" Mom asked.
"The(3) of the competition is peace," Mike explained, "and I feel most peaceful seeing a sunset."
Zach, his six﹣year﹣old brother came out of the bedroom. " Hey,you want to take a picture of me?Look!" He put both arms over his head.
"Not right now," said Mike,laughing.
That very afternoon,Mike felt excited when he saw clear skies. He carefully lined up his shot(镜头) and waited(4) till the sun reached the ground.
"That's it!Perfect!" he shouted cheerfully.
The next morning,Mike noticed he could take one more picture to complete the roll of film,so he walked into Zach's room.Zach was (5) quietly with a teddy bear under his arm.Mike didn't wake Zach up,and carefully took a picture of him.
A week later,Mike got the photos. The sunset picture was the one he was most(6) to see. There it was!It was as nearly perfect as Mike had expected.
Then,he looked through the other photos.Suddenly,he stopped. His eyebrows(眉毛) rose as he (7) the photo of Zach.He looked back at the photo of the sunset, which seemed less perfect now.He (8) the two choices. Finally,he decided to hand in the photo of Zach for the competition.

Blue whales are the largest animals in the world. But they are amazing(1) because of their huge size, but their slow heartbeat.
For the first time, scientists have researched the(2) of a blue whale. They found (3) when blue whales dive(潜水) for food, their heart rates(心率) are as(4) as 2 beats per (每) minute(bpm).Scientists used to(5) that their diving heart rate was 15 bpm. When the whales go to the ocean's(6) to breathe, their heart rate is between 25 and 37 bpm.
Usually, the larger an animal is,(7) its heart beats, since it takes more time to pump (输送) blood around(8) body.Shrews, the smallest mammals(哺乳动物) , have a heart rate of up to 1,000 bpm.Humans usually stay between 60 and 100 bpm.
(9) slowing their heart rate, blue whales can send more blood to the muscles(肌肉) that they use(10) .These muscles become stronger, allowing the whales to dive for longer periods of time.

As a child,I got angry quite easily and was not good at communicating with others.
I still remember it was an early autumn. Some (1) started to turn yellow and the weather became cool. One day,as I was getting ready for school,my mother carelessly handed me my father's vest(背心)instead of (2) .At that time,I was getting to have a (3) size than my father,so when I put on the vest,I felt as if I wasn't able to breathe! I got it off my body so wildly that I made a hole in it.I put on my own vest and rushed out of the house (6) my mother could stop me.
Later,my mother shared her bad feelings with my father,"See what your son has done."Instead of saying he would scold (责备)or beat me,my father (7) asked my mother to mend the vest. Later when my mother told me about my father's response(反应),I felt terribly sorry for my bad behavior(行为).My father's gentle kindness taught me a lesson which I would (8) forget.

Choose the best answer to complete the passage.
In our country we think being modest(谦虚的) is a virtue(美德) and being proud is a bad thing. One day,I heard an American boy say to a Chinese student,"You speak very good English."But the girl answered,"No,no.My English is very poor."The foreigner was quite (1) at the answer.Thinking he had not made himself understood or the girl had not heard him(2) .He said,"Yes,indeed, you speak very well."(3) the girl still kept saying,"No."In the end the American boy could not understand and didn't know (4) to say.
What's wrong with the girl's answer? She didn't (5) a compliment(恭维) in the same way as the American people do.She should answer"Thank you"instead of"No".She (6) understood what the American boy had said, but she thought she should be modest. In the (7) ,people will feel (8) and confident when they are praised. So if someone says the (9) you have cooked are very delicious, you should say,"Thank you".
If you are modest and say,"No,I'm (10) I can't do it well",while working in a western country, people may think that you really can not do it.If you oftensay,"No",you'll certainly be looked down upon by (11) .When asking (12) a job,if one says something like,"Yes,I can certainly do it"instead of"Let me have a try",he or she will (13) get it.So in the west, you should be brave to show your self﹣confidence. In my opinion, being confident does not (14) being proud,so sometimes you should be confident (15) being modest.
