(1) What is the single largest cause of sick leave in the UK? The answer is not the common cold or flu, but back pain. Back pain affects one in three British adults, costs the country over £5 billion every year and is extremely difficult to treat.
(2)But now Britain's National Health Service (NHS) will be offering a new solution: acupuncture (针灸).The ancient Chinese needle treatment has been around in the UK for many years, but this is the first time it has been officially supported.
(3)Traditionally, doctors in the UK have advised back pain sufferers to stay active, do stretching exercises and take painkillers when necessary. In more serious cases some people are given X-ray treatment or injections.
(4)The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), however, say there is evidence that acupuncture may_____ than expensive X-rays or injections, so patients who have been suffering for over six weeks should be given a choice. As an alternative to acupuncture, patients will be able to opt for either a course of spinal manipulation (脊椎推拿), or a series of special exercise sessions.
(5)In the UK, acupuncture is classed as a complementary treatment, which is the term given to a medical procedure which hasn't gone through the strict trials by which scientists prove some treatments work.
(6)While many experts have welcomed the move to make acupuncture available on the NHS, some are still sceptical about its effectiveness. Research from the US earlier this month found that simulated acupuncture using toothpicks which do not make a hole in the skin could be as good as using real needles. So while some are yet to be convinced, back pain sufferers will be hoping that acupuncture helps get them feeling healthy and mobile again. Employers, on the other hand, will be hoping it gets them back to work.

[1]It’s a fine line parents walk as they try to guide their kids into adulthood. You want to protect but not treat too kindly, advise but not control and let them live their own lives—with some input,of course.
[2]When your child asks for help or advice, give only what was asked for.If your Child asks you to tie a particular hard-to-tie knot(绳结)for a project she is working on,just tie the knot.Don’t start helping with the rest of the project or making suggestions on how to do it.She wants to do it herself,in her own way.Befor which your child has not askd for, count to ten.Perhaps in those seconds you’ll decide that the advice would do no good,or isn’t really that important, and you’ll drop it.If the advice still seems important, you will give it,but the pause may lead you to give it in a more thoughtful way.
[3]Remember that your child is not you and is not a reflection of you.We mak a serious mistake if we try to shape our children into copies of ourselves,or if we think of them as extensions or reflections of ourselves. We need to help them to be them, not try to turn them into us or into something that we think will make us look good.
[4]Our primary responsibility to our children is not that of telling them moment-to-moment or day-to-day how to behave but providing them with a healthy environment in which to develop. For example, one of the best ways you can help your kids is to work with your community to create safe-enough outdoor places to play in your neighborhood.

Being healthy means taking care of yourself physically and mentally. Here are some of my best tips on how to do both:
Break a bad habit. You don’t really “break” habits. You replace the unwanted behavior with something that prevents you from doing it and that doesn’t have unhealthy side effects. So if your problem is that you eat too much when you get home from work, find something new to do that is incompatible(不能共存的)with what you usually do. You can’t walk around the track at the school and pig out in your kitchen at the same time.
Grow your marriage. Relationships are negotiated, and the negotiation never stops. It’s always a give-and-take, always requires work. It’s like if you planted a garden and came back six months later----you wouldn’t even be able to find it. You have to tend it, feed it, weed it, deal with the problems.
Beat stress. My dog, Maggie, is the best anti – stress tool I have. A few minutes petting, scratching or playing with her, and . Exercise also helps. Just about every day, I’m on the tennis court. It’s a great workout, and if I don’t have that, I don’t cope as well, sleep as well or think as well.
Refocus your anger. Expressing your anger is just not that good an idea. You say things you don’t mean. Instead, recognize that anger is usually a symptom of hurt, fear or frustration(挫折), and deal with the causes rather than blow up. When you do that, you’re a problem solver.
Don’t medicate with food.
It never, ever works. You’re denying your issue by eating your way through it, instead of saying, Hey, I’ve got a problem.

Environmentally friendly gifts are perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, and other holidays. The quality of environmentally friendly gifts is usually comparable to or even better than the quality of gifts that are not as environmentally friendly. Because there are such a wide variety of environmentally friendly gifts available on the market, you have many great ideas to choose from. You’ll be able to buy gifts for everyone on your list and do your part to __________.
You can actually give many gifts that have been made from recycled paper. The quality of recycled paper is just as good as the paper made from raw materials, so you can give a quality gift and still do your part to protect the environment. This recycled paper is turned into gifts like journals, diaries, note cards, and similar items. Just because they’re made from recycled paper doesn’t mean that they’re going to be plain or boring. Recycled paper can be dyed many colors and gifts can be made in a wide variety of styles and textures. With the wide variety of gifts available, you’re sure to find something that your friends and family members will love.
Clothing featuring plants, animals, and flowers is popular among nature lovers. If you are able to visit a store offering nature clothing, you’ll have a wide selection to choose from. Jackets, shirts, and other clothing items can have nature scenes printed on them for your favorite nature lover. If you want to personalize these items, you can even have the receiver’s name printed on each item to make an extra-special gift. Many of these items can be made with natural fibers for an environmentally friendly gift that your loved one will enjoy for years.
Giving environmentally friendly gifts is a great way to show friends and family members with a love of nature that you care about their interests. Even the simplest gift will be appreciated if it shows that you thought about what your loved one enjoys and gave them something that fits in with their environmentally friendly lifestyle. Not only will you be giving a wonderful gift that your loved ones can enjoy for a long time, you’ll also be doing your part to protect the environment.

There’s worrying news for any parent who’s struggled with a headstrong young child. Some scientists recently claim that children who have low levels of self-control, which is the earliest demands that society places on children, at the age of three are more likely to have health and money problems and a criminal record by the age of 32, regardless of background and IQ. That is to say, willpower as a child really does influence your chances of a healthy and wealthy adulthood.
They found that children with low self-control were more likely to have health problems in later life including high blood pressure, being overweight, breathing problems and sexually transmitted infections. They were also more addicted to substances such as tobacco, alcohol and drugs, more likely to be single parents, have difficulty managing money and have criminal records.
Researchers from Britain, the US and New Zealand analyzed data from two large studies in which children completed a range of physical tests and interviews to assess genetic and environmental factors that can shape their lives.
The participants’ self-control was assessed by teachers, parents, observers and the children themselves and included things like having low frustration tolerance, lacking persistence in reaching goals, being over-active and acting before thinking.
Researchers then found that when the participants reached their early 30s, this impulsivity and relative inability to think about the long-term gave them more problems with finances, including savings, owning a home and credit card debt.
The findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal.

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage .
According to one study, words send only 7 percent of a person’s message. Intonation (语调) and voice quality communicate 38 percent, and nonverbal(not using or involving words) cues (暗示) transmit a large 55 percent. That means people pick up more from nonverbal communication than from the words a person says. When studying a foreign culture then, it just makes sense to pay attention to how people use nonverbal cues.
Gestures consist of a major form of nonverbal communication. But often these gestures are culture-bound. For example, when the Maoris of New Zealand stick out (伸出) their tongue at someone, it is a sign of respect. When American schoolchildren make the same gesture, it means just the opposite. Also, Americans often indicate “OK” with their thumb and fore-finger touching to form a circle. The same gesture means “money” to the Japanese and “zero” to the French. For that reason, people in a foreign culture must use gestures with caution.
Another part of nonverbal communication is the one that you might not think about — space. When someone comes too close, he feels uncomfortable. When he knocks into someone, he feels obligated (有义务的) to apologize. But the size of a person’s “comfort zone” varies, depending on his cultural or ethnic origin. For example, in casual conversation, many Americans stand about four feet apart. People in Latin or Arabic cultures, instead, stand very close to each other and touch each other often.
Considering the effects of nonverbal communication, we never really stop communicating. How we walk, how we stand and how we use our hands all send a message to others. That’s why it’s possible to “read someone like a book”.

Watching online open classes of US top universities has become necessary for many young Chinese who find it a shortcut to make their life more meaningful, in addition to learning knowledge and language.
Guo Lei, a native of Guangzhou, has become addicted to various open courses after she watched the online video of "Justice: What's the right thing to do."The video clip was taken during an open class taught by Michael Sandel, professor of philosophy at Harvard University.
Sandel set up a situation in which a high-speed train with a technical problem is running towards five people who are working on the current track, while there is only one worker on the adjacent (相邻的) track. He inspired students to discuss what the driver should do -- to change the direction for five lives -- which apparently will kill the other -- or to do nothing and allow five people to die.
Guo said she was immediately attracted by the topic and the discussion of the Harvard students about morality and justice. She even introduced the case to her colleagues for discussion, since Sandel did not give an answer, unlike most Chinese teachers she knew before.
The inspiring and lively teaching style of American professors refreshed Guo's impression about the traditional score-oriented Chinese educational system and prompted more Chinese to frequently search and watch open class resources of American top colleges, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and University of California Berkeley.
On China's social networking websites, such as renren.com, kaixin001.com and sina.com, netizens have spontaneously formed many study groups to share video resources and exchange opinions.Volunteers have added English or Chinese subtitles onto the videos to help more Chinese enjoy the videos without language difficulties.

〔2〕One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California third-graders.Those with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedrooms TVs.
〔3〕A second study, looking at nearly 1,000 grown-ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among 26-year-olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don’t prove that TV is the cause and don’t rule out that already poorly motivated youngsters(年轻人)may watch lots of TV.
〔4〕Their study measured the TV habits of 26-year-olds between ages 5 and 15.Those with college degrees had watched an average of less than two hours of TV per weeknight during childhood,___________ more than 2½ hours for those who had no education beyond high school.
〔5〕In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no computer at home scored the lowest, while those with no bedroom TV but who had home computers scored the highest.

[1]When we were children, it seemed that father knew everything. When we grew up and father became older, sometimes we quarreled about our own views. So I try to get on well with father.
[2]Remember the age of father. Being aware of father’s age will help us to understand him better. He has lived in the years when attitudes towards matters, such as poverty, unemployment, higher education, were quite different from those in our time. Thus it is impossible for him to change mind totally.
[3]Listen to father. As we grew up, what our father has told us often sounds not sophisticated(圆滑的)enough from the world we live in today. Yet I have found that sometimes the words that my father told me long time ago are remarkably useful. If father knows we respect his point of view, even if we do not share it, it will help him feel close to us.
[4]Remember that father has a past. When he was young, he lived a hard life. He came from remote village. How to stay in a strange city and how to earn money are problems he met first. He must work hard and face all kinds of difficulties. Full of wisdom, courage and hope,
at last. It is a part of his life that must have affected him deeply.
[5]Accept personality from father. Most of us have mixed feelings about taking after our father. We might feel fine about it when we are considering his admirable qualities. But we have realized that we and our fathers share those characteristics we do not admire. Accepting what we have inherited(继承)is important.
[6]Adopting any approach to get on well with our father is the issue of how we manage ourselves. We should keep a sense of humor with our father. Remember we will have our own child and surely we will be parents. Accepting and understanding our father is a part of our life.

[1] What does a successful language learner do? Language learning research shows that successful language learners are similar in many ways.
[2] First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher. Instead of waiting for teachers to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions.
[3] Secondly, successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language but . They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things. They are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.
[4] Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language.
[5] What kind of language learners are you? If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively and purposefully. On the other hand, if your language learning has been less than successful, you might do well to try some of the techniques above.
