When my son unexpectedly volunteered for the Marines(美国海军陆战队), I was busy writing my novels and giving little thought to the men and women in the army .
My son John Schaeffer, recently came home       from the Middle East. He slowly appeared from a broken car. John       all night from a base near Washington,       he had landed the day before. He did not want me to       him there. “I need time to myself,” my son said       calling from Kuwait on the way home.
I gave my wife a head start. Mother       son. “I was so worried,” Genie said. She pulled away to look up again and again to       he was really there.
My wife gave me a great gift:        alone with my boy. John was tired and lay      on his bed. I lay down next to him and was grasping his hand the whole time. I just wanted to be certain that the nightmares I’d had about John being killed were     .
I kept holding my son, the way I       when he was two and came into our bed after a       dream. I asked John if he’d rather sleep than talk, and he said there would be time for       later.
With the       over, under and around me came incredible tiredness. I slept with his voice dying away. It was the first good       I’d had in months. I woke and John was asleep next to me. Sitting by his bed watching him breathe, I found myself praying and       for all the fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, husbands and wives of those who were not coming home. For the first time in my life, I was weeping for       .
Before my son went to war I would never have shed tears for them. My son       me. He taught me that our men and women in uniform are not the “    ”. They are our sons, daughters, brothers and sisters. Sometimes shedding tears for strangers is a holy        . Sometimes it’s all we can do.

【原创】A good friend of mine passed away in June. John had cancer. Before you offer        , you should know that he didn’t want to be mourned(哀悼). It’s been a hard request to follow, but he felt he had lived a          life. As the cancer progressed, we fell into a(n)       of exchanging semi-regular emails. We generally        talking about his illness until the very end,           we talked about everything else: from baseball to snowstorms, to my garden and his art. We talked as if nothing would           . I’d mention a beach trip and John would tell me about surfing there when he was younger. I’d talk about some press(新闻)       that I would be attending and he’d tell me about the time he went to a party          by JPMorgan’s descendants(后代). In this way, John gave me a(n)        view of my world; it became layered with his stories.
One of our favorite things to do was       email the other if we happened to find an interesting movie on television. The other night, I           a very good movie, and without thinking about it I            for my laptop to send him an email, and then I          he wasn’t there to receive it. I put my laptop down with a small         of uneasiness --- and found something else to watch.
It’s hard not to have a digital presence today. While John wasn’t an active social media          ,he did have at least two email addresses, a LinkedIn account, and a website where he shared his art. Now that he’s          , these thing still exist, though unattended. I’m sure his work email has been closed, but I have no idea if anyone is           his other email address, or has the intention of contacting LinkedIn, or has        to his website. I’m sure at some      the registration will come to an end and his site will be closed, but until then, John has a(n)          online.

阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degrees of health and wealth and the other comforts of life, one becomes happy,         becomes unhappy. This         from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, and events, and the resulting effects upon their minds.
The people who are to be happy         their attention to the conveniences of things, the pleasant parts of conversation, the well-prepared dishes, the goodness of the wines, and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the         things. They are,        , continually unsatisfied. By their words, they complain about the pleasure of society, offend many people, and         themselves disagreeable (不受欢迎的) everywhere. If this turn of mind were founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up         by imitation (模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown         its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it are         its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and         them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of imagination, it has serious         in life, since it causes deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others, nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most         politeness and respect. This         puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at obtaining         advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step         speak a word to favor their hopes. If they cause themselves public objections (反对), no one will         or excuse them, and many         join to criticize their wrongdoings. These people should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing,         worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not,         will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient,         when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

Or something ____ could happen. Maybe this will become your new favorite book. There’s always a possibility, right? That’s the ____ of risk. You ____ your time and your brain power in the words and what you get back is a new understanding and pure wonder.
How could someone possibly know you like this? Some stranger, some author, some character. It’s like they’re seeing inside your ____. This book existed inside some book store, on a shelf, maybe handled by other people and really it was just ____ for you to pick it up. It was waiting to speak to you. To say, “You are not ____.”
You just want more of the story. You want to keep reading, maybe everything this author has ever ____. You wish it would never end. The closer it gets to the smaller side of the pages, the  ____ you read, wanting to savor(品味) it all. This book is now one of your favorites forever. When it comes to friends, people always know this old saying——A friend in need is a friend indeed. The best friend a man has in the world may     him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has        with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good reputation, may          our faith. A man may         the money he has. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are ready to fall on their knees to do us         when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of hatred when         settles its cloud upon our heads. The one         unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never         him, the one that never proves          or distrusted, is his dog.
A man’s dog stands by him in richness and in         , in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the cold wind blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his         side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to          ; he will lick the wounds and sores that come from encounter with the roughness of the world. He will guard the sleep of his master         he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he         .
