I truly hope that at the end of this short essay(短文) you will know how to learn English.
I was born in Somalia, and Italian is my mother tongue. 31 enough, soon after I arrived in London when I was 17, I was admitted to a sixth-form college. I found caring (体贴的) teachers there, who 32 taught me English. This, I think, was a(n) 33 factor(因素) that encouraged me to learn the language. The most important thing, 34, is to work hard. So those of you who don’t have such good teachers should not 35. When I was in London, I 36 myself to English learning as I 37 to go to university very much. Mastering the language was the only 38 to achieve my goal.
Now I have 39 my master’s degree from Oxford University. Looking back, I 40 I was quite innocent (天真的),for I never imagined learning English was going to be so much 41. The more fluent I become, the 42 the language became. One can master it only 43 years of tireless efforts(努力).
Some basic 44 which I would give to people who are interested in learning the language are:
1. Buy a good dictionary. 45 English learners use their dictionaries all the time.
2.46 English newspapers. Don’t forget to 47 the new words in your dictionary.
3. Listen to the radio 48 watching TV as listening to the radio helps you more.
4. Talk, talk and talk to 49 at anytime and anywhere.
And even though at times it may be embarrassing(尴尬的) to make 50,you will finally correct them and remember them. Soon you will start to become fluent.

I spent two months with an American family last year when I studied in America.
It is said, “The best house is in America, the best wife is in Japan, and the best food is in China.” So I took pride (自豪)and __21__ to __22__ “the best food” for my American family. Each day, regardless of my poor skill of cooking, I would do something in __23__ way: changing the dishes’ colour, the meat’s type or the soup’s style. (风味)Thus, my American friends could discover the __24__ of eating Chinese food. Because of my “__25__” job, I was often rewarded (奖励) by their __26__ of appreciation (感激)such as “very delicious”, “excellent”, etc.
But the joke was here: Yesterday, I cooked Sichuan style __27__ for dinner. I was __28__ at my achievement.(成就)
When all the family members arrived at the table, they first looked __29__ at the fish, then looked at me. “Why do all the fish have their __30__?” they asked, “It’s terrible!”
Terrible or beautiful? I don’t know. But I __31_ know that fish heads are delicious. The __32__ is the best part of fish; in __33__ only the respectable (受敬重的)guest can have the special honour of __34__ it.
Another __35__ thing is: The American friends often said to me “__36__” as they __37__ fruits or other things. According to Chinese tradition I would simply smile in answer to their kindness __38__ actually helping myself to any of the food. __39__, I said “help yourself” to them whenever I brought home fruits. Dear me, no matter how much or how often I brought home food, as long as it was nice to their taste, they __40__ hesitated (犹豫)to use their hands to “help themselves” until all was finished

It was Christmas 1961. I was teaching in a small town where my twenty-seven third graders eagerly 36 the great day of gift-giving in advance.
Each day the children produced some new 37 — strings of popcorn, handmade trinkets, and German bell. Through it all she remained alone, 38 from a distance, seemingly miles away. I wondered what 39 happen to this quiet child, once so happy, now suddenly so withdrawn. I hoped the festivities would 40 her. But nothing did. The students made the fried marbles(油炸玻璃弹子)and competed with one anther to bring the 41 ones.
The day of gift-giving finally came. We cheered over our handiwork as the presents were 42 . All along, she sat quietly watching. To see her smile, I had made a special bag for her. She opened it so slowly and carefully. I waited but she 43 . I had not passed through the wall of isolation she had 44 around herself.
After school I sat down in a chair, hardly 45 of what was happening, when she came to me with outstretched hands, bearing a small white box, and slightly soiled, 46 it had been held many times by 47 , childish hands. She said nothing. “For me?” I asked. She said not a word, but 48 her head. I took the box and cautiously opened it. There inside, glistening green, a fried marble 49 from a golden chain. Then I looked into that eight-year-old 50 and saw the question in her dark brown eyes. In a flash I knew — she had 51 it for her mother, who had died just three weeks before and would never hold her or brush her hair or 52 her childish joys or sorrows.
I meant it when I whispered, “Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. Your mother would 53 it.” Neither of us could stop the 54 . She threw herself into my arms and we wept together. And for that brief moment I became her mother, for she had given me the greatest 55 of all: her trust and love.

Most parents, I suppose, have had the experience of reading a bedtime story to their children. And they must have 11 how difficult it is to write a 12 children’s book. Either the author has aimed too 13 , so that the children can’t follow what is in his (or more often, her) story, 14 the story seems to be talking to the readers.
The best children’s books are 15 very difficult nor very simple, and satisfy both the 16 who hears the story and the adult who 17 it. Unfortunately, there are in fact few books like this, 18 the problem of finding the right bedtime story is not 19 to solve. This may be why many of the books regarded as 20 of children’s literature(文学) were in fact written for 21 . “Alice in wonderland” is perhaps the most obvious of this.
Children, left for themselves, often 22 the worst possible interest in literature. Just leave a child in a bookshop or a 23 and he will more willingly choose the books written in an imaginative way, or have a look at most children’s comics(连环画), full of the stories and jokes which are the objections of teachers and right-thinking parents.
Perhaps we parents should stop 24 to brainwash children into accepting our taste in literature. After all children and adults are so 25 that we parents should not expect that they will enjoy the same books. So I suppose we’ll just have to compromise(妥协) over the bedtime story.

I was interested to read a newspaper article about a new concept in old people’s homes in France. The idea is simple 41 revolutionary -- combining a residential (住宅的)home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building. The children and the residents eat lunch together and 42 activities such as music, painting, gardening, and 43 for the pets which the residents are encouraged to keep. In the afternoons, the residents enjoy reading or telling stories to the children, and 44 a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always somebody attending to (照顾) him. There are trips out and birthday parties, too.
The 45 are enormous for everyone concerned. The children are happy because they get a lot more individual 46 and respond well because someone has time for them. They also learn that old people are not “different” or “frightening” in 47 way. And of course, they see illness and death and learn to 48 them.
