Dear Benter,
You have been away exactly two weeks today but it seems more like two years to me!
I’m glad to hear you’ll be back soon. Are you coming directly home, dear? Or do you plan to make some stops 36 the way? I hope you’ll be home in 37 for Patsy’s birthday next Sunday. She is 38 you to show films to her 39 friends.
Patsy keeps asking every day 40 you’ll be back. She says you never 41 that story you were telling her about 42 train that lost its “ toot”(喇叭嘟嘟声). You’d better 43 and think up a good ending 44 it. You know how Patsy is? She 45 be happy until she knows exactly what __46 to the “toot” and 47 the little train got it back 48 !
Everything at home is fine except that we 49 you so much! I’ve been 50 with the spring cleaning. Yesterday I had Cora 51 in to wash the kitchen walls and she did a very good __52 of it. The kitchen looks as though it’s been repainted. I made some new yellow curtains, and they 53 very beautiful.
I went to see your mother yesterday. Her 54 is all gone and she looks very 55 . Your sister Jean looks wonderful! She has taken off about fifteen pounds since she began dieting. But now she’s complaining that none of her clothes fit!
Hope to see you before next Sunday.
Love and kisses to you!
Yours
Lynn

The ringing of the phone runs through my head, telling me someone needs help. I pick it up and 1 the routine, “Teen Lifeline, this is Amber.” About 45 minutes later I hang up, feeling pleased because I’ve helped another teen. Volunteering at Teen Lifeline has helped me realize how to deal with my own 2 and help others.
“My mom is always fighting with me. I want to run away.” Some teens feel their 3 is a prison, rather than a place of shelter and safety. They feel parents are only there to make their lives 4 . We try to help the teens realize the danger they could be in 5 giving them advice. All we can do is to ask questions. We also try to find out where the teens would go and how they would survive. We give them a phone number if they 6 don’t want to live in their “prison”.
“I don’t want to 7 any more” is something we hear, and suicide (自杀) calls are some of the hardest to 8 . We try to discover why they want to take their lives and how serious they are by asking them to rate it on a scale of one to ten. One means they are 9 suicide but haven’t decided how, and ten means they are always thinking about it and have a 10 . We ask them to make a promise that they will not hurt themselves. And sometimes we ask for their telephone numbers 11 we can call back to make sure that they are okay.
Although many calls are about relatively 12 problems, volunteering at Teen Lifeline has helped me realize I’m not the 13 person with problems, and has taught me how to 14 with my heart. I have made a 15 and saved many lives — possibly even my own, too.

When I was 11, my grandfather began to teach me how to drive. I was a fast learner. At 16, I was already a 1 driver. However, when I passed into adulthood, I began to get speeding tickets. For me, this did not reflect one’s 2 as a driver. So I 3 to drive as fast as I could.

Dear Kate,
I’m very 36 that you are coming to our school so soon. 37 you arrive, let me introduce 38 you what our school life is like.
Our school is quite famous 39 its long history. It was 40 in the early 1920s. It is a good place 41 we can prepare ourselves well for the future. We have many wonderful teachers who are always ready to 42 help. 43 we pay a lot of attention to how well we do in lessons, 44 high scores is not the only reason to study. The teachers encourage us to try out new ideas and ask questions. 45 their help we have developed all kinds of interests in both Arts and Science. Students can choose to 46 any school clubs they are 47 in. We can also choose the subjects that we want to study. Last term I selected American Literature, because I wanted to learn about famous American writers. This term I chose to attend music classes because my father bought me a piano 48 a birthday present.
49 , I was elected monitor of my class, 50 it can be 51 to be a monitor, 52 I have to do a lot of work and attend many meetings. 53 , being a monitor has taught me a lot, such as caring for others and taking responsibilities and so on. When my class was given the title of “Model Class”, I was 54 than ever before. So being a monitor plays an important part in my school life. I’m very pleased with my work.
I love my school and hope that you will have a pleasant experience here too. I am looking forward to 55 you soon.

Basketball is a sport enjoyed by millions of people in at least 100 countries. It’s one of the 26 sports in the world. It began in 1891.
Dr. James A. Naismith, the father of basketball, was a teacher of YMCA training school. It trained the people to work in YMCAs. Officials at the school were 27 about the low attendance during the 28 months. They 29 that people didn’t attend then 30 the school did not have a good sports program in winter. So they asked Dr. Naismith for 31 . He came up with a new indoor game.
Naismith studied games being played at that time. He found that all the most 32 games used a ball. So a ball would be part of his new game, he decided. But 33 the ball or hitting it would be too 34 for indoors. So he put two 35 up on the poles. The players had to try to 36 a ball into them. Naismith then made thirteen 37 for the game. Twelve of them are still in 38 today. Just seven 39 after the game began professional basketball teams were 40 . And that’s how basketball was born.

As Christmas is coming, there are presents to be bought, cards to be sent, and rooms to be cleaned. Parents are faced with difficult jobs of hiding presents from curious young children. If the gifts are large, this is sometimes a real 11 . On the Christmas Eve, young children find the excitement almost unbearable. They are torn between the wish to go to bed early so that Father Christmas will bring them presents quickly and the wish to 12 up late so that they will not 13 the fun. The wish for gifts usually proves stronger. But though children go to bed early, they often lie 14 for a long time, hoping to get a short look at Father Christmas.
Last Christmas, my wife and I 15 hid a few large presents in the storeroom. I 16 the moment when my son, Jimmy, would ask me where that new bike had come from, but fortunately he did not see it.
On Christmas Eve, 17 took the children hours to go to sleep. It must have been nearly 18 when my wife and I went quietly into their room and began 19 stockings. Then I pushed in the 20 I bought for Jimmy and left it beside the Christmas tree. We knew we would not get much sleep that night, for the children were 21 to get up early. At about five o’clock the next morning, we were 22 by loud sounds coming from the children’s room—they were shouting excitedly! 23 I had time to get out of bed, young Jimmy came riding into the room on his new bike, and his sister, Mary, followed close behind pushing her new baby carriage. 24 the baby arrived. He moved on the hands and knees into the room dragging a large balloon. We were woken up 25 by them at this time.

Most people who work in London get a break of about an hour for lunch. 36 they mostly live too far from home to go back there 37 lunch, they have to 38 other arrangements for their midday meal.
Many large companies have a canteen (自助食堂) for their employees. In 39 canteens the food served is simple but 40 , and there is some 41 of choice. But the number of dishes 42 usually small. The employees themselves fetch their dishes 43 a counter at which they are 44. There they can find a tray on 45 to carry their knives, forks, spoons, plates, cups, saucers, 46, of course, their food. A meal in a canteen is inexpensive and may 47 of soup, fish and chips or meat and two vegetables, 48 fruit or pudding of some 49 as dessert. Some companies that do not run a canteen 50 their staff with luncheon-vouchers (午餐券), which many restaurants will accept in 51 of money.
As there are so many people 52 work in London, there are numerous cafes and restaurants in every area that is not purely residential. A meal 53 cost anything from a modest sum to quite a few pounds, 54 on the restaurant and the food chosen. 55 , one can generally get a meal, or at least a snack, in a pub. In recent years there has also been a big increase in the number of ‘take-away’ food shops of all kinds.

When I was a law professor, a student reported that I made an error in grading his exam by giving him too many points. He was 36 , and after thanking him for his honesty, I changed the grade in my 37 . His beaming (欢笑的) face turned to shock. “You’re 38 my grade?” he said angrily. “I would never have come in 39 ……”
He didn’t finish the 40 , but it was obvious that his display of honesty was 41 . He thought he’d have it all—praise and the higher grade.
Several colleagues thought I should have let the higher grade 42 because all I’d accomplished was to discourage him from being 43 in the future. And every time I tell this story some people agree with this 44 .
But I can’t see how I could give good reason for worsening my 45 in grading by undermining (损害) the honesty of all my grades by failing to 46 an error. The grade itself would be a dishonest 47 of his knowledge and it would have been 48 to other students. How could I 49 give a student a gift of an unearned grade?
I know 50 reporting an error in one’s favor is unusual, but, like 51 too much change, it’s clearly the right thing to do. People of character, those with real honesty, hate to give up 52_ as much as anyone else. The difference is that for them a good conscience and reputation is _53 enough to give reason for the cost of doing the right thing.
Perhaps lowering the student’s grade did 54 him from being honest in the future, but bribing (贿赂) him to be honest so that he does the right thing when it’s cost-free would have _55 him even more. The duty to be honest is about right and wrong, not risks and rewards.

Dash of Hope
"Dash" is a symbol which represents every day we’ve spent alive on earth. Therefore, how you spend your "dash" is important.
Recently I 36 about a little girl named Hope. After learning more about her life, I couldn’t help but feel it was not by 37 , nor happenstance, that she had been named "Hope".The strong feeling of sympathy and generosity 38 in her young heart made a lasting impression on me and countless others. 39 I never had the opportunity to meet her, I wish I had.It seems as though she was wise beyond her tender years and very, very special.
Hope was a twelve-year-old girl who was 40 a "wish" in early December 2010 by the "Make-A-Wish" Foundation after being 41 that she had a rare type of bone cancer. However, when she found out that more than 150 42 in her area were waiting for their wishes to be granted (实现) , she unselfishly used her wish to 43 that those children have their wishes granted. She also asked tW it be done 44 January 16, 2011.Unfortunately, however, the organization informed her that her 45 request could not be granted as the funds (资金) were simply 46 .They calculated that they would need to raise more than one 47 dollars in thirty days in order to grant her wish. 48 , but not discouraged, she turned her disappointment into an enthusiasm that inspired caring 49 to take up helping grant the wishes of the other children, and eventually 50 as well.Newspaper columnists and reporters for radio and TV stations 51 the story of this caring young girl who had 52 the hearts of so many and as word spread, the community was challenged.Committees were fanned and schools, corporations and various organizations assisted in 53 money to help make Hope’s dream come true.
Her efforts were not in vain as they continue to help others, not only 54 , but spiritually and emotionally as well.At the gathering to celebrate her life, "A Celebration of Hope" on January 16, 2011 , the 55 was made that they had indeed received donations totaling more than one million dollars. Her wish had been granted!

Before discussing different kinds of emotions, let us briefly talk about how researchers 1 bodily processes, actions and behavior, and how this relates to what we do in our daily lives when we observe emotions in 2 .
Bodily processes can be directly measured by 3 of a polygraph. (测谎器)When a polygraph is skillfully used to 4 how we react bodily with what we are 5 , it is called a "lie detector". Bodily processes can also be measured 6 . This is what we do when we observe someone blushing (脸红). However, we are not always 7 of what bodily processes respond to.
Measuring action 8 behavior is the other way researchers assess the emotions. 9 , one measure of fear of snakes is how 10 a person will go to the snake. Another procedure is to have a person 11 how afraid he is, or how he feels, in this way, researchers have 12 the so-called "fear thermometer" to assess a person’s fear. 13 our everyday living, we do very much the same thing. Only not too 14 . We react to what a person does, what he says, 15 he says it, and how he looks. Is he smiling? Is his voice trembling? We put all this 16 together to infer what a person is feeling.
17 , we do not always act as we feel. Sometimes we do things that we don’t feel like doing. 18 we say we feel one way and then we act another. Actors, for example, successfully learn to "make believe" emotions, or learn to 19 them. Thus we 20 always tell what a person is feeling by what he says or by what he does.
