It was a bright spring afternoon when Freda told me she wouldn’t need me any more. I had just finished my four-hour work - 36   up and down the stairs of her three-storey home, cleaning the floor and washing the dished. She was  37  jeans and a sweater. Sitting at the table I had just   38  a pile of papers spread around her. Her husband’s 39    was going to be reduced by thirty percent. And they were trying to live as if it had 40   happened. I felt sorry for her, but I also felt a sense of   41  .
I had been cleaning Freda’s house for five years and had   42   an unexpected relationship with the family. It was not just   43   I had become an expert at scraping(刮掉)dirt stuck to their wooden floor.   44   that I had learned exactly how to place toys on the girls’ beds. It was   45   than that, for I felt I had become a part of their    46  .
Freda stayed at home with the kids,   47  I would often see her in the morning 48
them to school. And I’d be there when they   49   home at lunch for sandwiches and piano practice. I had   50   them grow up. Now I was fired, but the   51  thing was that I still wanted to keep scraping away the dirt and dust for the family.
I left Freda’s  52   relationship with my clients(主顾). Who am I  53  them? As a matter of fact. I’m   54   an employee - the lowest kind of employee. But I’m also a trusted  55   of the family. I can’t help worrying about what happens around me.

Surfing: It’s Not Just for Boys Any More

The variations of surfing styles are wonderful. Some surfers are free and flowing; others are very aggressive(活跃有力的) and   33 . All of these things attract me to surfing and make it   34   from any other sport.
I’ve    35   to tell every girl I know to do something that people don’t think girls can do. It’s part of being human to advance to new   36  , so shouldn’t it be expected that girls should step up and start   37 __the limits of things boys and men used to dominate(主宰)?

It was the summer of my freshman year of college. Instead of heading home for a nice long   1  , my friends and I had decided to   2   and take some extra courses. We had   3   the top floor of an old house to live in. My bed was   4    into a stuffy (愁闷的)former laundry room and each night was a new   5   in humidity. Still, it felt   6   to be in my own place for the first time. After the first few weeks,   7   , the thrill faded and   8   set in. I found myself sitting alone each night   9   my home and my parents.
My summer holidays had always been a   10   time. I spent hours playing basketball and swimming. I talked to my Mom while she tended her flowers. I   11   helping my Dad drag firewood for the winter. And every night I sat at a dinner table full of delicious food   12   with love while my family filled the room with the sound of sweet   13  . Now I found myself missing them   14   than ever.
Finally when my   15   were at their lowest, I heard a   16   at the door. I opened it and was   17   to see my parents standing there with big smiles to fill my   18   heart and a box full of food to feed my hungry friends. We spent the afternoon eating   19   , and just being together. It felt so good, and I felt so loved.
Victor Hugo wrote that, “The supreme happiness of life is the   20   that one is loved; loved for oneself, or better yet, loved despite oneself.” It was that gift of happiness that my parents gave me that afternoon and every day of my life.

After six months of living in New Zealand, I realized one thing. Despite my  1   for greater contact with local students,  2   I initiated(开始) the contact, it wouldn’t happen. Local students are not interested in contacts with the international students, because they regard us as shy,  3    and sometimes snobby (势利的) people. Of course we know that’s not true. I want to change their opinions.
After  4     the problem, I put on my “confidence mask” each morning and walked around with a smile on my face. I chatted with people whenever I had the chance. I showed that I was not afraid to  5     them, and that I was worthy of being a friend.
A side-effect of my  6     confidence was that my emotions occasionally broke down Only in the  7     of my room, where no one could see, would I reveal my real emotions. All the rejections, funny looks, and  8     behind my back calling me a weirdo(古怪的人) melted  into tears. Once that was done, I would put on my confidence mask once again and start a new day.
It finally worked  My name became known throughout the school as I appeared to be 9     and active. Slowly, I discovered that I no longer needed to put on my confidence mask. I had real    friends. Instead of dragging myself to school and  10    to be happy, I was truly happy. I could not believe it when I was elected to the student government as Deputy Head boy----the first international student to receive the title.

One afternoon, many years ago, I went to pick up my mother from work. I got there a little early so I   1   the car by the roadside and waited for her.
As I looked   2   the car window, there was a small park where I saw a little boy, around two years old,   3   freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short   4  . The boy had a big smile on his face   5   he had just been set free from some sort of   6  . The boy would then fall to the grass,   7  , and without hesitation or without looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could again, still with a   8   on his face.
Kids, when they fall down, don't view their falling down as failure, but   9  , they treat it as a learning experience. They try and try again until they   10  . While I was touched by the boy's persistence, I was   11   touched by the manner in which he ran. With each attempt, he looked so   12   and so natural — no signs of fear, nervousness, or of being discouraged. His only   13   was to run freely and to do it as effectively as he could. He was just being a   14   — just being himself—being completely in the moment. He was not looking for   15   or was not worrying about whether   16   was watching. He didn't seem to be bothered by the fact that maybe someone would see him   17   and that it would be   18   if he did fall. No, all that   19   to him was to accomplish the task, to feel the experience of running fully and freely. I learned a lot from that   20   and experience, and have successfully brought that lesson with me in my many pursuits(追求) in life.
