A boy was walking home from school when he saw a large, tempting (诱人的)apple on one of the branches of an apple tree hanging out over a tall fence. The boy wasn’t much of a fruit-eater, 1 a bar of chocolate if given the choice, 2 , as they say, the forbidden fruit can be tempting. Seeing the apple, the boy wanted it. The more he looked at it, the 3 he felt and the more he wanted that apple.
4 as high as he could , but even as his tallest 5 he was unable to touch it. He began to 6 up and down , as high as he could, at the 7 of each jump stretching his arms to get the apple . Still it remained out of 8 .
Not giving up , he though , if only he had something to 9 on . His school bag wouldn’t give enough height and he didn’t want to 10 the things inside , like his lunch box , pencil case , and Gameboy . Looking 11 , he hoped he might find an old box , a rock , or , 12 luck , even a ladder , but it was a tidy neighborhood and there was nothing he could use .
He had tried everything he could think to do . 13 seeing any other choices , he gave up and started to walk 14 . At first he felt angry and disappointed thinking about how hungry he had become from his 15 , and how he really wanted that apple . The more he 16 like this , the more unhappy he became.
17 ,the boy of our story was a pretty smart guy, even if he couldn’t always get what he wanted .He started to say to himself :This isn’t 18 , I don’t have the apple and I’m feeling miserable as well. There’s 19 more I can do to get the apple that is unchangeable-but we are supposed to be able to 20 our feelings. If that’s the case, what can I do to feel better?

Then, while taking the bus to work one day, I was 18 forced to quit—at least 19 . When I reached into my purse to grab Eloise, (to refer to my e-mail for only the seventh time that morning), I found her 20 by fever. She was so hot that I dropped her immediately back into my bag. My First Job
I was six when I joined my father and two elder brothers at sunrise in the fields of Eufaula. Okla. 36 the time I was eight I was helping Dad fix up old furniture. He gave me a cent for every nail I 37 out of old boards.
I got my first 38 job, at JM’s Restaurant in town, when I was 12. My main responsibilities (职责) were 39 tables and washing dishes, 40 sometimes I helped cook.
Every day after school I would 41 to JM’s and work until ten. Even on Saturdays I 42 from two until eleven. At that age it was difficult going to work and 43 my friends run off to swim or play. I didn’t necessarily like work, but I loved what working
44 me to have. Because of my 45 I was always the one buying when my friends and I went to the local Taste Freeze. This made me 46 .
Word that I was trustworthy and hard-working 47 around town. A local clothing store offered me credit (赊帐) 48 I was only in seventh grade. I immediately 49 a $68 sports coat and a $22 pair of shoes. I was 50 only 65 cents an hour, and I already owed(欠) the storekeeper $90! So I learned 51 the danger of easy credit. I paid it 52 as soon as I could.
My first job taught me self-control, responsibility and brought me a 53 of personal satisfaction few of my friends had experienced. As my father, 54 worked three jobs, once told me, “If you 55 sacrifice (奉献) and responsibility, there are not many things in life you can’t have.”How right he was.

On a hot summer day in late August, I sought shade and a cool drink at a waterfront café on a Greek island. Over a hundred degrees in 1 air. Crowded. Tempers(脾气)of both the tourists and waiters had 2 to meet the situation, making it a rather quarrelsome environment(环境)
At the table next to mine sat an attractive, 3 couple, waiting for 4 . They held hands, whispered, kissed, and laughed. Suddenly they stood, picked up their 5 and stepped together 6 the edge of where they were sitting to place the table in the sea water. The man stepped 7 for the two chairs. He politely 8 his lady in the knee-deep water and then sat down himself. All people around laughed and cheered.
9 appeared. He paused for just a second, walked into the water to 10 the table and take their 11 , and then walked back to the 12 cheers of the rest of his 13 . Minutes later he returned carrying a bottle of wine and two glasses. Without pausing, he went 14 into the water to 15 the wine. The couple toasted(祝酒)each other, the waiter and the crowd. And the crowd 16 by cheering and throwing flowers to them. Three other tables 17 to have lunch in the water. The place was now filled with laughter.

Customers are not served 18 . Why not?

There are many stories about people who did not let age stop them in the pursuit of their goals. I’m sure you have heard of recent 70-year-old college graduates, or teenagers who are 1 of many useful things or owners of companies. Actually, it can be done; it just 2 your attitude.
Michael had wanted to run his own business from an early age, but he was 3 a big risk taker. After many years of working for others, he put a business plan together and was about to make the 4 , but his friends told him that at 45 he was too 5 to start his own construction business. They thought it was a young man’s business while Michael needed a steady income to support his family. Michael was discouraged. 6 many of his friends worked in the very field that he was considering starting his business in, he 7 that they knew what was best, so he decided to give up his 8 . But his wife told him that he was foolish to do so. They discussed it and Michael 9 that he’d been using his age as a(n) 10 instead of as an advantage.
Have you put off a goal 11 age or another limiting factor? Does the limiting 12really have as much influence as you think? Age is just a number and each challenge is an opportunity. Your attitude 13 . You’re not too old to try something 14 and never too old to give up on your dreams. They may 15 a bit of adjustment, but if you want something enough, believe in yourself and your desires will have no bounds.
