Many people rely on a cup of coffee or two to wake them up in the morning or pick them up during the working day, but now a chemist has come up with a speedy alternative to crafting a cup of coffee.
U.S. biochemist Ben Yu has created Sprayable Energy, which claims to be the world’s first caffeine - based topical energy spray. He said tired workers can spray a `shot` of caffeine onto their skin without experiencing a strong buzz, loading up on unnecessary calories or being stuck with a nasty aftertaste like they might get from drinking energy drinks or coffee.
The patent-pending caffeine spray is an odorless liquid that is absorbed through the skin and distributed through the body over a number of hours to deliver a caffeine hit that apparently lasts longer than guzzling a cup of coffee.
Each small aluminum bottle of Sprayable Energy contains around 160 sprays - the equivalent amount of caffeine to 40 cups of coffee and the creators say it is a much cheaper way of getting a caffeine fix than popping to a café. The only active ingredient in the spray is caffeine, which can naturally enter the human body through the skin by passing through cell membranes(细胞膜) as it is very similar to nicotine in structure. Each spritz of Sprayable Energy contains around a quarter of the amount of caffeine found in a cup of coffee, but apparently has the same effect as a full cup.
The website said: `The reason for this is our product not being ingested, isn’t almost entirely metabolized(新陈代谢) by the liver before entering your system and becoming available to your body. Thus, a smaller amount of caffeine can have just the same effect as a very large amount of caffeine ingested through an energy drink or cup of coffee. The website recommends that users apply the spray in places where they normally spritz perfume, such as the neck or wrists, but warns users not to exceed 20 sprays a day.
It claims that after spraying the product on the skin, users will feel awake and focused without being over-stimulated, which is common with coffee and energy drinks.
What can we learn about Sprayable Energy from the passage? _______.

A.A bottle of Sprayable Energyis cheaper than 40 cups of coffee.
B.Sprayable Energy lets users not worry about taking in unnecessary calories.
C.Sprayable Energy can be used at least 20 sprays a day
D.The caffeine spray is a colorless liquid that is absorbed through the skin.

What can conclude from the passage ?
A, Sprayable Energy can be taken by mouth.
B. Before Sprayable Energy is absorbed by body, the liver entirely metabolizes it
C. Sprayable Energy has not already gone into mass production
D. each spritz of Sprayable Energy has the same effect as a full cup of coffee
You will probably read this passage in the column of___________.

A.Food B.Health
C.Entertainment D.Energy.

What’s the best title of this passage?

A.Sprayable Energy----cheaper but more effective
B.Sprayable Energy----now or never
C.Sprayable Energy----a latest energy spray
D.Sprayable Energy----a new kind of coffee

A woman renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk's office was asked to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.
"What I mean is," explained the recorder, "do you have a job, or are you just a. . . "
"Of course I have a job," said Emily. "I'm a mother."
"We don't list in mother' as an occupation...  in housewife' covers it," said the recorder.
One day I found myself in the same situation. The clerk was obviously a career woman, confident and possessed of a high sounding title. "What is your occupation?" she asked.
The words simply came out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations. "
The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in mid-air.
I repeated the title slowly, and then I stared with wonder as my statement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.
"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in this field?"
Coolly, without any trace of panic in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn't), in the lab and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother disagrees?) , and I often work 14 hours a day  (24 is more like it) .  But the job is more challenging than most careers and rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money. "
There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and showed me out.
As I drove into our driveway, feeling happier by my attractive and exciting new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants-aged 13, 7 and 3.
Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (a 6-month-old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.
I felt proud! I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and essential to mankind than "just another mother".
Motherhood... What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door.
What can we infer from the conversation between the woman and the recorder at the beginning of the passage?

A.The woman felt ashamed to admit what her job was.
B.The recorder was impatient and rude.
C.Motherhood was not recognized and respected as a job by society.
D.The author was upset about the situation that mothers faced.

How did the female clerk feel at first when the author told her occupation?

A.Puzzled. B.Curious.
C.Upset. D.Frightened.

How did the author feel when describing her job to the clerk?

A.Angry. B.Calm.
C.Unconfident. D.Annoyed.

Why did the woman clerk show more respect for the author?

A.Because the author cared little about rewards.
B.Because she admired the author's research work in the lab.
C.Because the author did something she had little knowledge of.
D.Because she thought the author did admirable work.

What is the author's purpose of writing the passage?

A.To show that motherhood is a worthy career and deserves respect.
B.To show how you describe your job affects your feelings toward it.
C.To show that the author had a grander job than Emily.
D.To show that being a mother is hard and boring work.

In the gym of Croxteth Community School, Liverpool, 50 boys have completed a course on boxing that is seen as a pilot for its return to state schools.
The Schools Amateur Boxing Association (SABA) has developed the Kid Gloves scheme (方 案),a -non-contact (非接触)version of the sport where outside coaches teach a range of basic skills.
Chris Andrews, assistant secretary of the SABA, said the scheme was regarded as a way of changing the decline in boxing in state schools which began 25 years ago.
Safety fears and the poor image of professional boxing had accelerated the sport’s decline. Concern was worsened by incidents such as the death of the professional boxer Bradley Stone. But the Croxteth example was winning more supporters. Mr. Andrews said the idea was particularly well received in the north-east of England.
“The interest shown so far has been enormous,” he said. “I believe that boxing will come back into schools. A video has been produced to promote boxing in schools, and a bid has been made for a Sports Council grant (拨款).”
He said, “I think there is a genuine recognition that there are aspects to boxing, if it is controlled and properly run, that really are very beneficial for children. This scheme takes away the dangers. I hope boxing can be promoted throughout the country in a more coordinated way.” Such an idea horrifies such groups as the British Medical Association (BMA) and the British Safety Council, both critics of the idea.
Dr Jeffrey Cundy, the joint author of a BMA report on boxing, accepted that the scheme in Liverpool was non-contact, but he was still opposed. He said, “We feel that children should still not be introduced to boxing, because they will then be encouraged to take up an activity which is uniquely dangerous when actual contact takes place.”
He added, “There is a whole range of sports which will teach the discipline that comes from boxing without the dangers. We see this reintroduction in schools as an unhealthy development.”
At the 800-pupil Croxteth school, Steve Stewart, head of PE, said boxing had helped to improve self-confidence, self-discipline, self-awareness and self-respect in those taking part. Everybody could get involved and, because all were starting from scratch, the improvements could be quickly seen.
Certificates were presented to the pupils at the end of the course by Paul Hodgkinson, a local boxer who is a former world champion. Next year, the course will be repeated and if possible girls will be allowed to take part following requests from them.
Gerry Thompson and Tony Curry, both 12,have enjoyed the boxing sessions and say they will both join a local boxing club. “I thought it was brilliant,” said Gerry. “I would rather be a professional boxer than a footballer. It’s more enjoyable•”
What’s the present situation of the Croxteth school boxing course?

A.It’s declining due to the safety worries.
B.Girls can be admitted as long as they’re willing to.
C.It’s becoming increasingly popular among the children.
D.Some pupils have been trained to be world champions.

Kids with Special Needs
Kids with special needs refer to any kid who might need extra help because of medical, emotional, or learning problems. For example, disabled kids need wheelchairs. They not only need the equipment that helps them get around, but they might need to have ramps(斜坡) or elevators available.
Kids with an illness would have special needs, too.      Kids with sight problems might need Braille books to read. Kids with hearing problems might need hearing aids.
It might be harder to do normal things—like learning to read or just getting around school. The good news is that parents, doctors, nurses, teachers, and others can help. The goal is to help kids be as independent as possible.
Other kids also can be a big help. How? By being a friend. Kids who use a wheelchair or have lots of health problems want friends just as you do. But meeting people and making friends can be difficult.      Be sure to tell a teacher if you see someone being bullied(欺侮) or teased.
You might carry the person’s books or do something simple, such as asking him or her to join you and your friends at lunch. It’s also important not to be “overly helpful”when no help is needed. Why? Because just like you, kids with special needs like to be as independent as they can be.
Being friendly to kids with special needs is one of the best ways to be helpful. As you get to know, they may help you understand what it’s like to be in their shoes. And you’ll be helping fill a very special need, one that everybody has—the need for good friends.

A.Some kids might laugh at or make fun of them.
B.They also might need to get a special bus to school.
C.Life can be challenging for a kid with special needs.
D.It’s good manners to try to offer help to kids with special needs.

E.Also try to be helpful if you know someone with special needs.
F.Kids with special needs usually live a harder life than normal kids.
F.They might need medicine or other help as they go about their daily activities.

A time capsule buried by Apple founder Steve Jobs 30 years ago has been discovered after its location was long forgotten.
In 1983, the young tech innovator was attending a conference in Aspen when he and the group decided to bury as a trick during a design convention. The tube that was filled with an eclectic collection of goods- ranging from the then-new apple mouse to a six-pack of beer for the people who discovered the time capsule- was meant to be dug up 20 years later. There was a problem with that plan, however, as everyone involved forgot where it was buried.
The final discovery happened at the hands of the crew from the National Geographic Channel’s reality show called Diggers. The discovery was well documented and is surely going to be featured on an upcoming episode, and even the experts had problems finding this particular treasure. CNET reports that in spite of their preparations and clear idea of where the 13-foot-long tube was, it still took them two hours to dig it up using heavy machinery.
To anyone removed from the tech industry, the accomplishment in finding the tube appears to be the biggest accomplishment. To others, the most interesting object would likely be the Lisa Mouse placed in the tube by the hands of a then-28-year-old Jobs. The Lisa Mouse, which Jobs named after his daughter, was one of the first commercial computer mice soled publicly, making it a rarity at the time.
The Aspen Historical Society is going to help the show creators make a list of the tube’s contents-but no word yet whether or not the Diggers cracked open one of the six bottles of Boddington’s Ale that was left inside for the people who found the tube.
Why didn’t people dig up the tube as planned?

A.Because it was difficult to dig it up.
B.Because the tube was too heavy.
C.Because everyone involved forgot where it was buried.
D.Because Steve Jobs died.

What is the meaning of the word "eclectic" in paragraph 2?

A.electronic B.original

The new high speed railway line between Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur self-governing region, and Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, has cut train travel time by half to less than 12 hours.
The dramatic improvement will benefit many families planning reunions for Spring Festival.
"For the first time, I feel home is not that far away after all," said Liang shaofu as he boarded a high speed train in Urumqi with six members of his family.
The 35 year old left Lanzhou to set up a dry fruit business in Xinjiang eight years ago, and he has now settled in Urumqi.
The 1,776 km line, which passes through Qinghai province and is the country's first high speed railway built in a high altitude region, came into service on Dec 26.
"We normally drive home for Spring Festival to avoid the difficulties of buying seven train tickets for the whole family during the peak season," Liang said. "Driving can be very tiring and dangerous sometimes, so one year we even decided not to go back to Lanzhou simply to avoid the trip.
More than 600,000 passengers traveled on the line during its first month, and the Urumqi Railway Bureau said the introduction of high speed services will ease transport pressure during the Spring Festival peak season.
The existing usual railway line could no longer support Xinjiang's development. All passenger trains will gradually shift to the new link, leaving the old one to be used for goods. As a result, Xinjiang's annual goods ability could reach 200 million metric tons from the current 70 million.
The line passes through areas that experience high winds, and it also crosses parts of the deserted Qinghai Tibet Plateau and the bone dry sands of the Gobi Desert.
The project could help China to promote its high speed railway technology abroad, said Ma Xizhang, director of the Lanzhou Xinjiang railway project's management department in Xinjiang.
How long did it take to go from Urumqi to Lanzhou by the usual train before?

A.about 12 hours. B.About 6 hours.
C.About 18 hours. D.About 24 hours.

What’s the main advantage of the new high speed railway?

A.It takes more time to go to Urumqi to Lanzhou.
B.It will be more convenient for people all over the country to Xinjiang.
C.All the people in Lanzhou can return home on festivals.
D.It helps to improve Xinjiang’s development.

From the passage we can learn _______.

A.Xinjiang’s annual goods ability can increase nearly four times
B.the new railway technology may help more railway lines to be built abroad
C.the high speed railway lines can’t be built across the bone dry sands
D.the old railway lines can only carry goods now

Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.The new high speed railway line is good for all people to go home.
B.The new high speed railway line benefits businessmen to carry goods.
C.Taking the new train is safer than driving home from Urumqi to Lanzhou.
D.Businessmen seldom went home for Spring Festival before.
