Many books have been written about “the art of giving”. But what about the art of r 1 ? Sometimes, receiving a gift can be difficult, especially when someone buys you a gift you don’t want!
“I remember when I was about twelve years old, my parents b 2 me a purple purse,” laughs Guo Xiaojing. “It really made me feel embarrassed(尴尬), because I thought the purse was really ugly!Still, I pretended (假装)that I liked it b 3 I knew it would make my parents happy!”
Han Ling agrees. “That sounds like my grandparents!A few years ago, my grandparents gave me an orange sweater f 4 my birthday. I used to wear it every time I visited them, but when I left their house, I took it off! Of course, this made me feel g 5 . It was a very nice thought, but my grandparents have different taste from me! I think it’s hard to buy clothes or other personal things for people.”
To make things easier, some people would rather just give money. In some cultures, h 6 , receiving money can make people uncomfortable. “When someone gives me money, it j 7 makes me think they’re being lazy,” says John Wilson. “In England, we have a saying: It’s the thought that counts. When s 8 gives me money, I feel they don’t think at all. I prefer to receive a gift that has some thought behind it. I don’t mind if it’s something I don’t need. If someone has thought about a g 9 for me, it always makes me happy.”

Nowadays, too much carbon dioxide makes the earth warmer and warmer and causes terrible effect to human beings. To save our planet and ourselves, a new lifestyle called low-carbon life becomes popular. Low carbon means low energy and no waste. It is necessary for everybody to learn to live a low-carbon life.
To live a low-carbon life, we’d better save energy as much as possible. Turn off the lights and TV whenever they are not needed. If possible, use cold water to wash clothes or dishes. Take a short shower and try to take a cold one when the weather gets warm. Don’t do the cooking with electricity.
To live a low-carbon life, we should eat less meat. Everybody knows eating too much meat makes people fat and easy to have heart disease, but maybe you don’t know keeping animals for food produces even more carbon dioxide than all the cars in the world, and being a vegetarian (素食主义者) can help reduce one and a half tons of carbon dioxide a year. Maybe it is a little difficult, but it’s really necessary.
To live a low-carbon life, we are supposed to do less shopping. When we go shopping, we may drive a car or take other transportations (交通工具). On one hand, these machines pollute the air and waste energy. On the other hand, most of us always buy some useless things because of some advertisements. It not only waste money but also causes trouble to the earth, because making everything will produce carbon dioxide more or less.
There are many other ways to live a low-carbon life, such as recycling things, planting trees and reusing textbooks. If we can keep it a habit in our daily life, the earth will become a safer planet for us to live on.

Going on holidays is best choice for the Europeans to relax themselves, especially in the UK. However, much has changed during the past decades(几十年).
One of the most traditional British holidays was the “seaside holiday”. Families got on a train or into a car and traveled to seaside towns nearby to sunbathe on the beach, buy ice-creams and eat fish and chips and so on.
In the late 1970s, more and more British people started traveling to other countries in Europe for their summer holidays (July-August) because the weather wasn’t very good, even in summer. The “package holiday” was particularly popular with most families.
In the 1980s and 1990s, young people in the UK became wealthier, so many of them traveled to countries all over the world for their holidays.
These years, especially after the world financial crisis(金融危机), most British people can not afford to spend their holidays abroad. They again begin to choose to stay in their own home and go on a few day trips rather than spending money on hotels. They call this sort of vacation a “staycation”.

CCTV cameras watch action
In UK , Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras are everywhere. They help the police solve crimes and keep the streets safe. But that’s not all they do . They also catch people doing very stupid or smart things.
One of the videos is of a British woman Mary Bale. She clearly doesn’t like cats. In 2010 she was caught on CCTV throwing one into a dustbin. The video shows Mary walking down a quiet street. All of sudden , she notices Lola the cat jump onto a fence. Mary stops to pickup Lola and drops her into a large dustbin . Lola was saved fifteen hours later. And Mary was arrested for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal . She was fined ( 罚款)£250 and was not allowed to own pets for five years.
Another video shows “ Britain’s drunkest man” . He’s been at a party at London’s Savoy Hotel. And he’d obviously had a few too many glasses of beer. At about 2 a. m. , he was kicked out for being too drunk . So, he decided to walk home. On the way , CCTV cameras filmed him falling down stairs and crossing the roads madly… A Savoy Hotel waiter said, “ It’s amazing he didn’t hurt himself badly.”
Sometimes they also record smart events. Once a British band The Get Out Clause didn’t have any money to make a music video. So , they came up with an unbelievable idea. They set up their instruments ( 乐器) and played a song in front of eight CCTV cameras. And then, according to the English Freedom of Information Act , they asked for a copy of all the footages ( 视频) , which they edited. The result is that a totally new music video was made, and it didn’t cost them a penny.
