Many kids help parents to do chores in the house. They may take out the trash, walk the dog or sweep the floor. In return, some kids get money or other rewards from their parents, such as 20minutes to play computer games.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Jane Smith, a parenting educator and family coach. She believes if kids get rewards, they may think that work isn't worth doing unless you get something in return. For example, kids won't sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will do it if their parents reward them for it.
"Every house is a team effort," Jane said. "A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that we all have a responsibility to keep our home clean."
Other people hold different opinions. They believe that money or other rewards encourage kids to do more chores. It also teaches them real world lessons. They can learn about how we need to work to make money.
Now, there are also apps that encourage kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and digital (电子的) gifts that can be used either online or in life. With the app ChoreMonster, kids earn digital points after doing chores. Kids can exchange their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall. "Our goal is to encourage kids so they can earn rewards," says Joe Black, founder of ChoreMonster. "Kids need positive (积极的) power to make them do chores."

Frank and his brother Jack lived near the ocean. Frank was outgoing while Jack was shy. They liked doing different things. Frank was famous for organizing games of beach volleyball, football, and any other sport imaginable. Jack preferred to draw, paint, or build sandcastles(沙堡).
Frank didn't understand why Jack would rather do artistic things than play ball. He believed sports often allowed many kids to play together. That was when Jack's idea hatched. He would show Frank what doing things together looked like!
After Jack finished creating a special sandcastle with stairs, towers and walls,he took pictures of it.Then he painted colorful posters featuring(突出)his sandcastle and the question, "Can you top this?" He hung his posters everywhere in town, announcing his plan for a day of sandcastle artistry﹣all ages welcome.

After Frank came back from his ball game, he went to check how his brother's plan turned out. He couldn't believe what he saw. At least 30 people were building a city of sandcastles, and everyone was chatting and laughing and working together! It was the most beautiful thing he had seen on the beach.

Many of us stayed at home in January because of COVID﹣19,but a special mom and her two babies took a trip. They were driven a few miles from a breeding center in northeastern Argentina to a 1.7 million﹣acre nature reserve called Gran Ibera Park. There the three jaguars were released into the wild.
Their release was the first reintroduction of jaguars in that part of Argentina since the species(物种)almost died out there 70 years ago.Scientists hope they can turn things around for this important apex predator, meaning one that is on top of the food chain (链).Only 200 to 300 jaguars remain in the country.
"That is the highest level of protection that can be given in Argentina,"says Sebastian Di Martino. He's the conservation director for Rewilding Argentina, which is one of the organizations helping to restore jaguar populations.
The jaguars' journey started in 2018 when the park was built in the Ibera Wetlands.Several thousand jaguars once lived there, along with other important species. But the jaguars' fur was valuable,so people hunted them. Then farmers cleared the land they lived on.With the jaguars gone, the ecosystem was out of balance.
"In the absence of this species, ecosystems stop working well and may even collapse," Di Martino says. "The main prey (猎物) of the jaguar is the capybara and the caiman. They are very abundant because of the absence of the jaguar, which causes imbalances in the ecosystem."
The park was the first step to give jaguars a place to live. Then they needed to breed.A female named Mariua mated with a male jaguar from Brazil.Mariua then gave birth to the two baby jaguars.
It sounds simple, but the reality is more complicated.Di Martino said that jaguars born at breeding centers have to learn how to hunt and must not become used to humans.Otherwise, they will not have success in the wild.
The people who work at the breeding center stay out of sight. They use video cameras to watch the jaguars from several miles away."We provide live prey for them, without them realizing it comes from people," Di Martino said.
Mariua wears a radio collar so researchers can track her and her babies,Karai and Pord. "So far,so good. She's been hunting capybaras and wild pigs and is raising her babies very well," Di Martino says.

The cold wind blew strongly outside. Amaya was warm in her house, thinking about an article she'd read at school. The article was about kids who helped out their communities, and she thought it would be really cool to help her own town, Harvard.
The only problem was that she wasn't sure how to help. In the article, the kids had grown food for people who needed food, but it was winter. She couldn't start a garden. Amaya was deep in thought when her mom said it was time to go shopping.
As they drove along the road, Amaya saw a family walking on the sidewalk( 人 行 道 ),wearing only light jackets. How cold they must be! That gave her an idea! She could collect winter coats, hats and gloves for people who needed them.
She shared her idea with her mom, who thought it was great. But how would they spread the idea to get plenty of winter clothing? Amaya decided to talk to her teacher, because then she could share her idea with her classmates at least.

Why are dogs our best friends.Maybe because they can understand our words much better than we thought, according to a study in Hungary. It found that dogs understand not only what we say,but also how we say it.
"The results were very exciting and very surprising."Said the researcher Attila Andies, from Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest.
For the study, the researchers first trained 13 dogs for months. The dogs had to sit quietly inside machine,so that the researchers could check their activity.
Then the researcher put headphones on dogs and played people's voice to them. There were four different voice. Some were positive words, such as"well down",or neutral(不带感情色彩的) words like"however".The words were also in different tones(音调).Some were positive and some were neutral.
Brain scans(扫描)showed that the dogs could recognize(辨认)words.as well as the tone of words, much like people do.The positive words with a positive tone brought the stronger activity in their brain's reward centers(反应中枢).
"It shows that for dogs,a nice phrase can word very well as a prize, but it words best if both words and tones match."Said Andies.
They also found that dogs deal with meaningful words with the left side of the brain and tones with the right.Human brains work in the same way.
It gave us a new understanding of language, said Andies. That is,not only do humans understand the meaning in words, other species(物种) do too.

What's a spacewalk? Any time an astronaut gets out of a spacecraft(航天器) while in space, it is called a spacewalk. Astronauts go on spacewalks for many reasons. For example, experiments can be placed on the outside of a spacecraft. This lets scientists learn how being in space affects( 影响) different things. By going on spacewalks, astronauts can also fix things instead of bringing them back to the earth to fix.
When astronauts go on spacewalks, they wear spacesuits to keep themselves safe. Inside spacesuits, astronauts have the oxygen(氧气) they need to breathe and the water they need to drink. To keep the astronauts and the spacecraft safe, the astronauts must leave and go back to the spacecraft through a special door. When on a spacewalk, astronauts use safety tethers to stay close to their spacecraft. Tethers are like ropes, connect the spacewalkers with the spacecraft. They keep astronauts from floating( 漂 浮 ) away into space. Another way astronauts stay safe during spacewalks is by wearing a SAFER. SAFER is worn like a backpack. It helps an astronaut move around in space.
How do astronauts train for spacewalks? One way is by going for a swim. Floating in space is a lot like floating in water. Astronauts practice spacewalks underwater in a huge special swimming pool. For every one hour they will spend on a spacewalk, astronauts need to train seven hours in the pool. Another way astronauts practice for a spacewalk is by using virtual reality(虚拟现实). It looks and feels just like a spacewalk.
Today, only three countries have finished spacewalks independently. They are Russia, the United States and China. The first person to go on a spacewalk in the world was Alexei Leonov from Russia. Zhai Zhigang is the first Chinese astronaut to go on a spacewalk. The world record of spacewalks is held by Russian astronaut Anatoly Solovyev. He has been on 16 spacewalks and spent more than 82 hours outside in space.

DNA is the whole"map" of the human body.It is something that all humans have, and it tells the body what to do.DNA is the reason that we look like our parents, because we get some of their DNA to make our own.
People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time.In 1860,Mr Mendel discovered why we look similar to other people in our family. It is because of small things called "genes(基因)"in our body.In 1953,two scientists,Watson and Crick, found out that those small parts are real messages. They are written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961,another two scientists found the first "word" that they could understand in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell(细胞) to build its parts. So far, scientists have found all the words in the DNA map,but we do not understand what they all do.By understanding what just one "word" means,we can help to save people from several illnesses. So the more we understand ,the more doctors will be able to do.

We spent holidays with our uncle. He loved to go on walks to collect stones. One day,he bought us backpacks(背包) and asked us to go to the mountain with him and carry the stones.
The whole day we walked around.Every now and then he put stones in our bags.To our surprise,he also took some stones out from our bags. But we thought he had just found better stones.
When we returned to the house,we were very tired. The backpacks were so heavy that we felt relaxed when we put them down. But uncle's backpack was half empty.
"Why did you put so many stones into our backpacks?"we asked.
"I didn't.You did."He said."You didn't know it,but I gave you a test today.I listened to every word you said.Whenever you were complaining(抱怨),I added a stone to your bags.Whenever you talked about something with positive(积极的) thinking,I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks."Our backpacks were full of stones.

I was filled with doubts and worries until my grandfather told me to stand tall.
For me, height was my trouble. I was much taller than other girls, so I often bent( 弯曲) my body at the back of the line. I had always felt unsafe as the tallest student of my class in Bala Cynwyd. And I wasn't looking forward to entering the ninth grade.
My grandfather didn't laugh at me. Instead, whenever I tried to bend myself in order to appear shorter, he would tell me "Stand straight and tall, Alisa. "I trusted my grandfather more than anyone else in my childhood. And whenever I was afraid of something, he always told me stories of his life.
My grandfather grew up in war﹣torn(战乱的) Europe." Stand straight, stand tall "meant something else then. After the war, he went to America. He lived a hard life, "If they could do it, why couldn't I?""Stand straight, stand tall,"he often reminded(提醒) himself. Thanks to the help of a friend, my grandfather got a job. He once told me that he was very nervous at first. He was not only trying to learn this hard new job but also a new language.
"Stand straight, stand tall," he would always tell himself. I am so proud of my grandfather. After listening to my grandfather 's unusual experiences, I have changed the way I look at my own life.
"Stand straight, stand tall"has become not only a piece of advice to improve my posture(身姿). It also tells me to be proud of who I am.

FROM THE EDITOR
DEAR
READERS.
Happy birthday to us! TIME zine's firse(期刊) came out on March3, 1923. Sure, 96 isn't the most special birthday, comparing with the 100th birthday. But we take every opportunity( 机会)to celebrate. TIME for Kids came along just a little bit later, in 1995. Soon, we will have our 25th birthday!
We have run our Kid Reporter program for many years. Many kids who took part in the program as a reporter are professional journalist(职业记者)now. While they were working with TFK, they caught some great opportunities, like interviewing political leaders, famous people, Olympic athletes, scientists, and more.
Do you dream of being a reporter? Come and join us! On March 15, we will hold our annual(一年一度的) competition to find our next group of TIME for Kids Reporters. Editors from TFK will choose 10 best students.
