My first home was a beautiful meadow with a pond of clear water. There were some large trees near the pond. On one side of the meadow was a field and on the other was the house of our master, Farmer Grey. He was a kind man.
My mother and I had a happy life. She worked during the day, I played with the other young horses and had great fun. At night I lay next to her.
One day, my master sold me to Squire Gordon. He lived with his family in a big house.
"You're a beautiful horse," he said. "You have a beautiful black coat. I shall call you Black Beauty."
I learned to carry my master on my back and pull a coach. I learned to ware reins (缰绳) and a bit in my mouth. I did not like them but all the horses had to wear them.
My master had two horses. One of them was Merry legs. He was very friendly. The other was Ginger. She was not friendly. She bit and kicked people.
Ginger and I pulled a coach together. The coachman's name was John. Ginger and I worked very hard. We became friends.
Ginger told me about her life when she was young. She told me, "My master was not kind to me. My reins and bit hurt me. My master did not care."
Squire Gordon and his men felt sorry for Ginger. They were always king to her. She stopped biting and kicking people. She became a happy horse.
One day in autumn Squire Gordon went on a long journey. John went with him and I pulled the coach. The weather was rainy and windy. Mr. Gordon and John could not see well in the rain. We came to a bridge. I stopped. "Something is wrong," I thought. I did not want to go on to the bridge. Mr. Gordon and John wanted me to go on to the bridge. I did not move. Just then a man saw us."Hey there! Stop!" he cried.
"What is it?" shouted the Squire.
"The bridge is broken in the middle," he answered. "If you go on to it, you are all going to drown in the river."
"Thank God!" said the Squire. "Thank you, Beauty!" said John. We turned around and went along the road by the river. For a long time no one said anything. Then John said: "Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous."
When we returned home, the Squire told Mrs. Gordon:
"We are all safe, thanks to Black Beauty!"
That night I was glad, because I was very tired.

The longest river in the world is the Nile. It is 4,160 miles long. But the Nile is not the mightiest (浩荡的) river. The Amazon is.The Amazon is also the second longest river in the world. It is 3,900 miles long. How long is that? It is longer than a road going from New York City to San Francisco.
The Amazon is the mightiest for this reason. It has the greatest amount of water. More water runs out to sea than from the Nile. Mississippi, and Yangtze rivers combined. That's a lot of fresh water! The force of its current (水流) is great too. The current can be seen 200 miles out in the sea. There's a story to show the Amazon's amazing current. A ship sailed (航行) far away from Brazil. It ran out of drinking water. Another ship passed by. The first ship asked for water. Someone on the second ship said. "Just put your buckets (桶) into the sea."
Here are a few more facts. At its mouth, the Amazon is 90 miles wide.Even up the river, you can't see the opposite bank. The river is also very deep(from 22 to 76 meters).During rainy season, the river rises about 16 meters more. Big ocean ships can sail about 1,800 miles upstream (向上游).Smaller ships can sail 1,000 miles farther.
What's the most bloodthirsty fish in the world? No. It's not the shark. It's the Amazon's piranha. It is only about 10 cm to 20 cm long. It has sharp teeth. Thousands travel in a group. No animal can swim across the river.A 1,000﹣pound horse would be just bones (骨头) in three minutes. Are you planning a trip to the Amazon? Here's a piece of advice. Leave your swimsuit at home!

If you feel sad or upset, remember not to watch a happy movie.A sad movie may be more suitable for you.
Some scientists at Ohio State University, the U.S.,have found that sad movies can make people happier. They published their study in a magazine called Communication Research.
Scientists asked 361 college students to watch a sad movie called Atonement. The movie tells a story of two lovers who were separated. They died during World War II at the end of the movie. The 361 college students answered questions from the scientists before, after and three times during the movie to find out their different feelings, including sadness.
According to the result of the survey, scientists found out that people felt better after watching the sad movie.Scientists believed this was because the movie made them think about their own lives and relationships.Compared to those of the unlucky lovers in the movie, their lives were full of hope.
"I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie has made me think a lot," one student wrote.
Silvia Knobloch﹣Westerwick, the leader of the study, explained that bad moods (情绪) would make people more thoughtful. "Good moods are generally a sign that everything is fine. You don't have to worry, and you don't have to think about problems in your life," she said. "But bad emotions, like sadness, make you feel terrible about your situation. Therefore, seeing a sad movie may make you feel bad,but that will cause you to think more about your own close relationships and value them more."

With so much free time on our hands during lockdown, many of us have entertained the idea of knowing more about the world. Learning a foreign language is a good choice. Here are a few examples, in order of time it takes people to learn them.
Latin languages (about 600 hours)
The popular Latin languages ﹣ Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese ﹣ require about 600 hours to learn. Of these, Spanish and Italian are the easiest for English speakers to learn. They are followed by Portuguese and finally French.
Latin languages share many words with English. However, those shared words look or sound similar, but have different meanings over time.
Greek (1,100 hours)
Modern Greek is maybe the easiest language to learn that uses a different alphabet(字母表).It is also a language that has contributed many words to English. Indeed, the president of Greece once gave two speeches at an international meeting that included just Greek loan words(外来词) as well as the unavoidable basic English.
Japanese (2, 200 hours)
Counting objects in Japanese depends on whether they are long and thin (like "roads"), small and round (like "apples"), thin and flat (like "sheets of paper"), and hundreds more examples.
What Japanese you speak also depends on your gender(性别). There's a "rough" language for men and a more "ladylike" language for women, but you must understand both.
Chinese (2, 200 hours)
Each Chinese written word is hardly understandable when spoken between a Mandarin (普通话) speaker in Beijing and a Cantonese speaker in Guangdong. If you think that's strange, consider our number system: the symbol "2" is widely understood but it's pronounced "two" in English and "duex" in French.
