People depend on plants. We use plants for food, cloth, shelter (住处), and even the air we breathe (呼吸).
Plants keep our air and water clean. Green plants give us oxygen (氧气). Oxygen is part of the air we breathe.
Plants are also part of the water cycle (水循环). Most of the water that a plant takes in goes back into the air.
Plants give us a lot of the food on the earth. Fruits, vegetables, and grains (谷物)come from plants. Without plants, we would not have bread, rice, carrots, apples, oranges,or bananas! Many people are growing plants to eat in their own gardens at home. Having your own garden helps the earth as well.
When you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you help cut down on pollution because big trucks don't need to take your food to shops. You also help reduce the amount of rubbish because you don't need to use bags for packing your food. You can just pick it out of the ground or off a plant and put it into a basket!
Trees are an important plant resource (资源). Trees provide wood to build homes and furniture. Trees are used to make lots of things around your home and at your school. And trees provide fruits that are good for you. Without trees, the earth would be a very different place.

Dear Nicole,
How are you? Do you enjoy your summer holiday? I'm sure you do.
It's been two weeks since I returned to New Zealand, but I'm still thinking of the exciting city life in Hong Kong. In New Zealand, life is totally different. I miss the delicious sweet soup so much.
The weather has been bad these days. Yesterday I got a cold and didn't go to school today. I hate taking medicine but I have to take it. I must get well soon because I will have tests on science and geography next week. I must prepare for the tests this time so that I won't fail again.
I remember that you like our local hand cream (护手霜), but it is quite expensive in Hong Kong. I bought you some last weekend and I am sending it to you. It's much cheaper here than in Hong Kong.
It's almost the end of August. It's time to pack (收拾) your school bag and get ready for the new school term. Take good care.
With love,

People use languages to communicate.Any language has its ways to express people's minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms. An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill.So when people say "I'm under the weather," they are saying that they're not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, "There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers" tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.
Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless headaches. On the other hand,if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.
Metaphor (比喻) is often used in idioms. Let's read the following two examples:
●It makes my blood boil (煮沸) when people litter.
●The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside at dark night.
In neither situation above, our blood can reach the point so high or so low in temperature.Yet, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to work out the unhappy feelings of really angry in the first example and very afraid in the second.
Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language,a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.

(3)What is the writer's advice when you come to an expression like under the weather?

B. |
We should try to express our minds with it. |
C. |
We should find an interesting way to learn it. |
D. |
We should create situations to guess its meaning. |

These days, teenagers are heavily influenced by the media. Many of them have watched thousands of hours of TV.That's more time than they spend with teachers at school. And we haven't yet considered the hours they spend using the Internet and reading newspapers.
However, several studies have shown a serious problem: today's teenagers lackmedia literacy(媒体素养). In other words, they have difficultly critically thinking about the information they see. One study that was done on middle school students showed that more than 80 percent of them couldn't tell the difference between real stories and ads that looked like news.
Standford professor Kevin John teaches a class called Media Effects. He tries to help his students learn media literacy. The professor gave an example that shows why media literacy is important. In the example, two news stations report a snowstorm. One focuses on(关注)the terrible road conditions. The other focuses on kids playing in the snow. "With a news story. news stations tell you what they feel are the important details(细节). These details mostly depend on the opinions of the news director." said John. "A person who has media literacy would realize that each story is about one side at this time. There is more going on."
Some experts think school is the best place to teach media literacy. Other believe everyone﹣from parents to reporters﹣should help teenagers learn the skills.
As for the best time to start learning media literacy, many experts suggest the age of 12. But some basic ideas can be taught even earlier. "It's never too early to start learning media literacy," John said.

How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors,do you feel better when you visit your local park? Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains. However, humans are spending more time inside and less time outside. For example, the number of visitors to Canada's national parks is getting lower every year. And in countries such as the USA,only 10% of teenagers spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel that this is a problem in the twenty﹣first century.
As a result, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health:one example of this is the work of Dr Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a maths test.During the test, their heart rates(心率) were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D﹣virtual﹣reality(虚拟现实) room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature.Their heart rates were slower than people's in the other group.
The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed.Another good example of how nature is good for health comes from Canada. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city.In general, they found that healthier people lived near parks.
Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want nature to be part of people's everyday life.In Dubai(迪拜),for example, there are plans for a new shopping mall with a large garden so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. In Switzerland,"forest schools" are popular.Schoolchildren study their subjects in the forests and do lots of exercise outside. And South Korea(韩国) is another good example:it has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year.So after building cities for so long, perhaps it's now time to start rebuilding nature.

Some people ski(滑雪) down mountains.Others climb huge rocks or photograph dangerous animals. Why do people enjoy risky activities like these?
Some people take risks simply because it makes them feel good.Psychologist(心理学家)Marvin says that this kind of explorers(探险者) are always looking for change and excitement. When people do something new or risky,a chemical(化学物质) in the brain creates a pleasant feeling. They love this feeling and want to experience itas often as possible.
Other people don't take risks for the feeling of excitement but to achieve a goal. For example,Mike Fay went on a dangerous 2,000﹣mile special journey in central Africa. He worked to help save the wildlife there.Fay's expeditionshelped create 13 national parks.
For other people, such as extreme athletes(极限运动员),taking risks is part of their job.Sports psychologist Shane says extreme athletes see the world differently. In a dangerous activity, most people probably do not feel in control.Extreme athletes are different:they feel in control in dangerous situations. The danger can even help them. For example, skier Daron Rahlves says that being afraid makes him try harder to succeed.
Most of us are not extreme athletes or explorers. However,we still take risks in our lives. Some of us take social risks, such as speaking in front of a large group of people.Sometimes,we take financial risks, such as buying a house. And sometimes we take career risks, such as leaving a job or starting a business. Most people take risks in some areas of life, but not in others. What kind of risk﹣taker are you?

Cait, 11, was trying to fall asleep when her 8﹣year old brother, Doug, came into her room.He looked around, but seemed really out of it.Then Doug went back into the hallway and stood there looking straight up at the light. This was really strange.Cait didn't know what to do.Just then,Cait's father appeared and explained Doug was sleepwalking.
Not all sleep is the same every night. We experience some deep, quiet sleep and some active sleep, which is when dreams happen. You might think sleepwalking would happen during active sleep, but a person isn't physically active during active sleep. It usually happens in the first few hours of sleep in the period called deep sleep.
The truth is that not all sleepwalkers walk. Some simply sit up or stand in bed or act like they're awake when, in fact, they're asleep! Most, however,do get up and walk around for a few seconds or for as long as half an hour.
Sleepwalkers' eyes are open, but they don't see the same way they do when they're awake. They tend to go back to bed on their own and won't remember it in the morning.
You also might have heard that sleepwalkers can get frightened if you wake them up.That's true,so what do you do if you see someone sleepwalking? You should call for a grown﹣up who can lead the person back to bed.And once the sleepwalker is tucked back in bed, it's time for you to get some sleep, too!

"Are you listening, Simon?"Simon's teacher asked. It was a pretty usual question.
Simon shook his head, smiling. He hardly listened or tried hard in class.Talking was so much fun.He wanted to be heard rather than listen.
"Listen, and you'll learn something.Mrs. Jacobs tried every day, but Simon never paid attention.
That evening, his throat really hurt. The next morning, when he opened his mouth to say "Good morning",nothing came out but a croak.
Simon's mother looked at him."Honey, you've lost your voice."
"Can I stay home?"He tried to ask, but words didn't come out.Instead, his mother checked him for a fever and decided it was good for him to go to school, even if he couldn't talk.
When he got to school, Mrs. Jacobs said "Hello" to him,and he just nodded. When his friends asked him what TV show she watched last night,he just shrugged.By the time the bell rang for class, almost everyone was looking at him as if he'd grown a third eye.
Penny raised her hand."Mrs. Jacobs, why isn't Simon talking?"
"He never stops talking,"Richard said worriedly.
Everyone started talking at once. They were excited, worried, and surprised.
Simon sat in class, bored. He watched them talk to each other as if the teacher wasn't there, but he couldn't even do that.In math class he could hold up fingers if the answer was less than 10, but that wasn't fun.He decided to try to pay attention.
He could do his homework that night. It gave him TV and game time with his work all done.
The next day, even though his voice was coming back, he stayed quiet again. The third day,he could talk fine, but he listened and raised his hand to speak.
What a difference that one day made!
