Food is a kind of culture. It's a nation's memory and pride. The famous French baguette (长棍面包) is one of their memories and prides.French people think it should be protected. "It is much more than just a kind of bread. It is a symbol of France—it's like the Eiffel Tower," said Dominigue Anract, president of the Confederation of French Bakers.
So it's no wonder that a group of French cooks want the baguette to become a form of intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) listed by UNESCO.French culture leaders have given a suggestion to the country's president.
UNESCO's intangible heritage list aims to protect culture from the influence of the world.Cooks in France believe that if the baguette is on the list,it will be better protected. The list already includes Belgian beer and Neapolitan pizza.
The baguette has been protected by law since 1993.The law says the bread must be made with only the following things:water, wheat flour, yeast and salt. The flour should be fermented (发酵) for 15 to 20 hours at a certain temperature. This strict rule makes the food special and delicious.
Six million baguettes are sold every day in France. However,as supermarkets continue to take over, tens of thousands of shops have closed since the 1950s. "The first thing we ask of a child is to go buy a baguette," Anract said. "We think it important to protect these habits."

One wet, rainy April afternoon Miss O' Shay, the principal, sent for Nancy Lee to stop by her office as school closed.Pupils without umbrellas or raincoats crowded in doorways hoping to make it home between showers.Outside the skies were grey.Nancy Lee's thoughts were suddenly grey, too.
She did not think she had done anything wrong, yet that tight (紧的) little knot came in her throat just the same as she came near Miss O' Shay's door.Perhaps she had banged her locker too often and too hard.Perhaps the note in French she had written to Sallie halfway across the study hall just for fun had never got to Sallie but into Miss O' Shay's hands instead.
She knocked on Miss O' Shay's door. That familiarly solid and competent voice said, "Come in."
Miss O' Shay had a way of making you feel welcome, even if you came to be punished.
"Sit down,Nancy Lee Johnson," said Miss O' Shay. "I have something to tell you." Nancy Lee sat down."But I must ask you to promise not to tell anyone yet."
"I won't,Miss O' Shay," Nancy Lee said, wondering what on earth the principal had to say to her.
"You are about to graduate," Miss O' Shay said. "And we shall miss you.You have been an excellent student,Nancy, and you will not be without honors (荣誉) on the senior list,as I am sure you know."
At that point there was a light knock on the door.Miss O' Shay called out, "Come in," and Miss Dietrich entered."May I be part of this, too?" she asked, tall and smiling.
"Of course," Miss O' Shay said."I was just telling Nancy Lee what we thought of her.But I hadn't got around to giving her the news.Perhaps,Miss Dietrich, you'd like to tell her yourself."
Miss Dietrich was always direct."Nancy Lee," she said, "your picture has won the Artist Club scholarship."
The brown girl's eyes widened, her heart jumped, then her throat tightened again. She tried to smile, but instead tears came to her eyes.
"Dear Nancy Lee,"Miss O' Shay said, "we are so happy for you." The elderly white woman took her hand and shook it warmly while Miss Dietrich smiled with pride.
Nancy Lee must have danced all the way home. She never remembered quite how she got there through the rain. She hoped she had been calm. But certainly she hadn't stopped to tell anybody her secret on the way.Raindrops, smiles, and tears mingled on her brown face. She hoped her mother hadn't yet got home and that the house was empty.

One cannot discuss Chinese music without mentioning the guqin, one of the four arts-along with game of go,calligraphy(书法)and painting. It first appeared over 3,000 years ago and stands for China's solo musical instrument tradition.
At first, the guqin had only five strings(弓玄),meaning the five elements(元素)of metal, wood, water, fire and earth.Later,in Zhou Dynasty,King Wen of Zhou added a sixth string for his son.King Wu of Zhou, added a seventh string to encourage his army to fight with the Shang.
Ambiencewas important in playing the guqin.Usually,it was practiced in a quiet setting and never for public performance.Ancient artists enjoyed performing by a stream in the mountains. The sound of the guqin mixed with the echoes(回音)from the mountains, until the musician felt he was at one with nature.Playing it in snow was also an enjoyable activity for ancient artists, who believed the instrument was the purest of its kind in the world. Also,a night with moonlight was considered wonderful for playing the guqin.Wang Wei(701-761),a highly talented man of the Tang Dynasty, liked playing it in a bamboo forest on nights with moonlight most.
Guqin pieces are usually three to eight minutes long, with the longest being Guangling Verse, which is 22 minutes long.Other famous pieces include Plum Blossoms in Three Movements,Wild Geese Landing on the Sandbank and Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute.
Nowadays, there are fewer than one thousand well﹣trained guqin players and perhaps no more than fifty living masters. The original number of several thousand pieces has greatly reduced to only one hundred works by today. The guqin and its music was added to the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity(人类非物质文化遗产)in 2003.

I came to the United States from Africa to live with my uncle Jim in Maryland. One year later,I lost my sight because of a serious illness.
Jim told me not to go out.He worried I would get lost or hit by a car.But I was dogged.I told him I'd pay attention.I believed I'd succeed.I must succeed.I must put my will into action.I dreamed of being a broadcaster.
Then a neighbor told me that a public library in Washington D.C.was offering a free course, specially designed for blind people,This was an important chance for me.
But how would I map my way?I knew that the American singer Ray Charles, also blind, got around on his own without a cane (手杖).His secret was to count steps. But I couldn't seem to do that way.Instead I developed my imagination.sensing the layout (布局)of places I Visited and taking notes of landmarks in my mind.
At first,I would have to stop to imagine and map a new space in my mind,The next time I visited that place,I'd use that to find the way.Today.I am used to doing it,But I've still lost my way many times.I'd have to swallow my pride to ask for help, not thinking what others think or say about me.
Sometimes I'd be down and I'd consider giving up.Perhaps my uncle was right.Maybe I'd stay home and wait until someone came to help.On those days when I lost my way,I'd go to bed with a bad feeling.▲.I had e strong wish 10 bear blindness and be successful, and that was usually enough to get me out of bed the next day and try again.

Today,I'm a reporter and broadcaster.I've achieved my dream.
Yes,I've lost my way many times and found it again.Yes,I've come close to being hit by a car but never bee hit by one. When people ask, "Aren't you afraid to be out alone?" the answer to me is clear;I would face danger and find happiness instead of staying home and being unhappy.

Why is it that the people you meet when backpacking(背包旅行)seem to be more interesting and outgoing than your friends at home? That's my experience, anyway.Very often, you'll meet people that are fun to travel with and worth getting to know.I've spent time with people of many countries and have found out some interesting things about their cultures. It's a great way to learn more about the world.
It's often easy to make new friends while you're traveling, and you'll be able to hang around with them for a few days, until one of you leaves for the next exciting place.Relationships of this kind are shorter but can be just as strong as friendships back home, because you do so much together in that short time.I often find I like to share things about myself that I'd never say to my close friends. It is safe,I think, because we probably won't meet again, except online.
One thing that's important when you're backpacking is to make sure you carry only basic needs,so your backpack isn't too heavy.I travel" "light" these days. One good tip someone gave me is to take old clothes and just throw them away when you move on,instead of washing and waiting for things to dry. Many hostels(小旅社)don't provide shampoo and shower gel.You can get mini bottles in supermarkets.
I've discovered that many backpackers visit little places other tourists don't go to,and by using local shops and guest houses, they help those places with much﹣needed financial(经济上的)support. Most small guest houses allow you to stay for unlimited time,so you can spend as long as you like exploring the local area.Backpackers are also kinder to the environment, because they use trains and buses rather than cars. So,what are you waiting for? Did you have cereal(麦片)for breakfast this morning? If you did, you're not alone.Lots of people eat cereal for breakfast every day.In fact, cereal is popular all over the world. It all started with one man,Will Keith Kellogg.
Will was born on April 7,1860,in Battle Creek,Michigan. His first job was as a stock boy at the Battle Creek Sanitarium.A sanitarium is a special kind of place that is a little like a hospital.A sanitarium is meant for people who are ill for a long time or who are getting over a serious illness. Will had other jobs as he got older. But when he grew up,he became a manager of the sanitarium. His brother,John, was the chief doctor there.
One big problem at the sanitarium was the patients' diets. The patients needed healthy diets, but it was also important for the food to taste good. Will was trying to find a good food choice to take the place of the bread, but it wasn't going very well. Then,by accident Will found something even better. He left some wheat to cook too long. When it was rolled out,it formed large, thin flakes. He asked his brother to serve it to the patients, and they loved it!In fact, they liked it so much that they wanted breakfast flakes sent to them even after they left the sanitarium. So Will started a new business in 1884:selling packaged breakfast flakes. Before long,Kellogg's breakfast cereal was popular in other countries, too.Today, there are many kinds of breakfast cereals. But it all started with one man and one idea.
Will did more than just create breakfast flakes. His company made a lot of money. But he always shared it with others generously. He used much of his money to help children. He also used his money to help in several other charities(慈善机构).Will Kdllogg died in 1951.But his most famous invention is as popular as ever.
