下面是两封Celia写给她的老师Mr. Scott的信以及Mr. Scott给她的回信。
Dear Mr. Scott, I’m writing to complain about my deskmate, Lana. She likes junk food (垃圾食品) and she always brings some to school. After she eats it, she drops the litter into my desk. She also has a bad habit. After she borrows my pencil, she doesn’t return it. I get angry when she copies (抄袭) my homework. And she sometimes makes ink marks (墨迹) on my clothes with her pen. These things always happen and she doesn’t care about my feelings. I need your help. Can you let me have another deskmate? Yours, Celia |
Dear Celia, I’m sorry to hear that Lana has so many bad habits. And I’m glad that you discuss your problems with me. I talked to Lana yesterday. She said she did these things because of her carelessness (粗心). She wanted to be polite with our help. She agreed to put the litter in a bag. She said she would do her own homework and be careful with her pen. She asked you to remind (提醒) her by saying“Would you mind returning my pencil?” Would you mind not changing your deskmate? She is a nice girl. It’s important for you to help each other and you will understand each other better. Yours, Scott |

Jim is a little boy who stays with his grandma.
He likes sweets and cakes. He always eats some food with sweets before he goes to bed. And as soon as he gets up in the morning, he can find some cakes on the table in his bedroom.
One morning, before Jim got up, his grandma took some cakes to his bedroom. She saw Jim crying in bed.
“What’s the matter, dear?” his grandma asked in a hurry.
“I have a bad toothache,” said Jim.
So his grandma had to take him to the dentist’s. Jim was looked over and the dentist pulled out the bad tooth for him at last.
Two days later Jim felt better and was at school again. Mrs. Hunt asked, “What was the matter with you those days, Jim?”
“I had a bad toothache, madam,” answered Jim.
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that,” said Mrs. Hunt. “Is it better now?”
“I don’t know, madam. It was left with the dentist.” answered Jim.

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways. The first important way is that they provide man with food, wood and other products. Trees provide man and animals with food to live on the earth. It’s not easy for man to live on the earth without trees.
The second important way is that trees give us shade. On a hot summer day, people are eager to(急于)have a rest under the shade of a tree after they have walked a long way. You can imagine how important the shade of a tree is to man and animals.
The third important way is that trees help to prevent droughts and floods. However,in many parts of the world, man has not realized the third important way. He has cut trees down in large numbers. In the end he finds that he has lost the best friends he once had.
Is it easy for man to live on the earth without trees?
What is the first important way that trees bring us?
Where are people eager to rest after they have walked a long way?

Health experts predict that soon, more people will die from cancer than from AIDS, tuberculosis (结核病)and malaria combined(疟疾). They expect that by 2013, cancer will become the world’s leading cause of death.
Experts say one reason that more people are dying from cancer is because they are smoking cigarettes in developing countries. 40 percent of the world’s smokers are believed to live in China and India alone. Other things including high fat diets and fewer physical activities are also believed to be pushing the numbers more.
Rates (比率) of breast cancer (乳腺癌) in Japan, Singapore and South Korea are now 3 times what they were 40 years ago.
The W.H.O. report says that 12 million people will be found to have some kinds of cancer this year. It predicts that more than 7 million people will die early as a result of cancer. And more than 5 million of the new cancer cases will be in developing countries.
The number of cancer cases and deaths from cancer are expected to increase one percent each year. Experts are predicting the largest increases will be in China, Russia, and India.
Without new treatments, the W.H.O. says, the number of new cancer patients could reach 27 million a year by 2030. The number of deaths could reach 17 million a year.
A report in December said the number of men and women dying of cancer in the United States had dropped for the first time .The report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute said the drop was mainly the result of fewer cases of lung(肺), prostate(前列腺) and colorectal(结肠) cancer in men. In women, it resulted from fewer cases of breast and colorectal cancer.
The American Cancer Society says governments can do things to help stop the increase in cancer cases and deaths. One idea is to provide poor and developing nations with vaccines(疫苗) that help to stop some cancer-causing infections (感染). One example of a cancer-causing infection is human papillomavirus (乳头瘤病毒). This virus(病毒) can cause cervical cancer in women.
Another suggestion is more support for cigarette-control programs. And the cancer society says health officials and governments should pay more in cancer research and early detection(检测).

“Of course I was afraid of becoming fat when I started the job, so I try to do exercise as often as possible. The main thing is my teeth. The World Wide Web(www.万维网)turned 25 years old on March 12th. It has become a very important part in our daily lives. We can’t imagine living without the web, the short form of the World Wide Web.
In 1989, a British engineer named Tim Berners-Lee came up with the idea of the Web. It is a group of “pages” of information that are connected to each other around the world. That is the very beginning of the Web. Since then, the Web has greatly changed the way people live. With a click(点击)of a mouse we can read news, buy things, make friends and learn anything we’re interested in. Now, 25 years after its birth, how will the Web influence life in the future? Scientists believe there are both advantages and disadvantages.
A growing Web will help build “better relationships” between different cultures. Also in the future, everyday items could be connected to the Web. We could share plenty of information to make our daily lives more convenient(方便的). So one day in the future, your front door could send you a message. “Dear sir, everyone has left the house, but I’ m still open!”
But scientists warn(警告)us that if we share personal information on the Internet it could get into the wrong hands.
“It’s not wise to spend a whole day in front of the screen. People need to get close to nature and enjoy the sun. Never be controlled by the Internet.” said Berners-Lee.
