Mostly, inventions happen because someone works to solve a problem. Kids are natural inventors. They often create amazing thing from simple ideas. Here are a few examples that might make you wonder,"Why didn't think of that?"
Popsicles
Popsicles were invented by 11﹣year ﹣old Frank Epperson in 1905. He forgot a drink of juice and left it with a stir(搅拌) stick in it outside on a cold night. The next day it was ice. Because of this he couldn't drink it any more, but he could eat it. It tasted good! These ice sticks became popular among kids at school in summer because they were delicious and helped them stay cool.
More than a hundred years later, popsicles are sill one of the best summer treats!
Crayon Holdans
When 11﹣ year﹣ old Cssidss Coldstein needed crayons for a school project, she had a hard time because, there were so many small or broken ones. She found some small clear plastic tubes(管子)at home.Although the tiny tube were usually filled with water to keep flowers fresh, she found that they fit tightly (紧紧地) around the crayons. She was now able to hold them easily. This is how she invented Caryon Holders.
Wristies
When snow gets in kids' gloves and their hands get wet, they feel uncomfortable.10﹣year﹣old Kathryn Gregoary decided to do something about it.She created the wristies as she wanted to keep her wrists(手腕)warm and dry. Wristies are long gloves with no fingers and they are worn under your coat. They help you when you work in the cold because your hands stay warm while you use your fingers. With her parents' help, Kathryn also opened a small shop where she sold her wristie. And she still runsit today.
All these inventions have one thing in common﹣the kids were trying to solve problems in their lives. When you meet problems, what would you do? If the kids can do it ,you can do it, too!

Looking at art should be like walking in the countryside. You may not know exactly where you are, what bird is making that strange sound, or what the hill ahead of you is called, but that's part of the fun of it.You don't need to know these things to feel the beauty of nature.
Of course, if you do know your birds, trees and local history, a walk can be more attractive. Yet such knowledge comes slowly. It is picked up through experience.A true knowledge of nature cannot just be given to you through an app on your phone.Imagine pointing your phone at the hill and getting plenty of information on screen. Would that enrich your dreamy walk or ruin(毁灭) it?
Braggarts enjoy an app that allows them to show off their knowledge, for example, about baroque(巴洛克风格的) paintings. In fact, apps in museums try to provide on﹣screen art history at once just to encourage people to read their phones instead of looking at paintings.
It is a mistaken idea that you need to be spoon﹣fed(灌输) amazing facts about a work of art in order to appreciate(欣赏) it. Our first experience of a work of art should be raw(自然状态的),unguided, and a bit puzzling, like following a path in the woods. Later, you might choose to do some personal research into the work. It can further increase your enjoyment and appreciation for it. Yet it is best done when you're away from the art itself, so that even when you return, the work still feels fresh.
Anyone who thinks knowing some dates and details makes you better understand a work of art is wrong. We all need to put aside our screens and our supposed knowledge when we look at art. Let the paintings flow in; let your intuitions(直觉) fly off. Art is a journey in the wilderness or it is nothing at all.
(1)What does the writer mainly want to say?
A. Art is best with the help of apps.
B. Art is best when hidden in mystery.
C. Art is nothing compared with nature.
D. Art is nothing when details and facts are known.
(2)The underlined word "braggarts" refers to(指) .
A. people who like showing off
B. people who like baroque paintings
C. those who are good at appreciating art
D. those who are good at painting with phones
(3)What's the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. How to appreciate a work of art.
B. How to personal research into a work of art.
C. How to keep your feelings about a work of art fresh.
D. How to be spoon﹣fed amazing facts about a work of art.
(4)what can we infer(推断) from the passage?
A. Because of apps, art will be ruined in the future.
B. A good piece of art is usually made about nature.
C. Research work and intuitions can both help understand art.
D. Museums are not supposed to allow the use of mobile phones.
Just the other day,I was in a bookshop and found a book named How to make friends with foreigners. As a Canadian living in China for a year,I was curious to see what kind of advice a Chinese writer giving on this matter.
One piece of advice really caught my attention and,I must say, made me feel quite angry. In the writer's opinion, foreigners are an"opportunity (机会)"to improve your oral English;whenever you see a foreigner,American or English, you should practise speaking English with him or her.If the foreigner doesn't want answer your questions, then he or she is a nude person who you wouldn't want to spend time with anyway.I think this advice is not only incorrect, but also may harm the relationship between Chinese and foreigners in China.
Like most other "Lao Wai" living in China,I know how lonely one can sometimes feel living in a culture different from our own familiar (熟悉的) ways. However,I simply accept as part of being here.So far my time in China has been rewarding.I have improved my Chinese language skills, learned about one of the fastest developing countries in the world today and made some very close Chinese friends.
However,I have also met many Chinese people who consider me only as an "opportunity" to improve their oral English.I have had people following me from town to my flat to trouble me to teach them English.I have had complete strangers throwing articles or speeches in my face, insisting that I help them with the English translation.I have had people asking me non﹣stop questions for half an hour at the weekly English Corner ...
Friendship for a lot of foreigners is about spending time with someone whose company (陪伴) they really enjoy. So if there is any advice to give on making and keeping friendships with foreigners,I would say that it is this:Treat foreigners as people, not opportunities.Expect to make friendships step by step, over a period of time, not in a rush. If your only reason for becoming friends with a foreigner is to improve your English, then you will probably find that you don't have a foreign friend for long.

A.his advice may make foreigners angry
B.it is rude of you to ask a foreigner questions

Like you, plants need good things like food, water, and minerals in order to grow. Usually they get these important nutrients(营养) from the rich soil(土壤) in which they're planted. But there's another way to grow plants that doesn't use soil. It's called hydrogenic gardening.
"Hydrogenic" means "working with water. " In a hydrogenic garden, plants grow with their roots in water, not in dirt. The water is filled with special food for the plants that gardeners have carefully measured and prepared.
Hydrogenic plants grow quickly. In ordinary gardens, plants need time and energy to grow long roots that search the soil for food and water. In a hydrogenic garden, plants can use their energy to grow tall instead. And because there is no soil, there are no weeds and few insect pests(害虫). Gardeners don't need to spray(喷洒) plants with dangerous chemicals. Both the plants and the environment stay healthy.
Scientists hope that, one day, hydrogenic gardens may be able to help hungry people all over the world grow enough food﹣even in countries that have bad soil, or weather that is too hot, too cold, or too dry. And astronauts hope to take hydrogenic gardens with them to the spaceship they fly to Mars, so that they will always have fresh vegetables, and the fun of growing a garden without dirt.

Drones are like airplanes, only without a pilot. No one without a pilot's license should be allowed to have one.
Something bad or unexpected can happen when people send up a self﹣controlled flying machine like a drone without knowing how to really control it. Drones can become flyaways, and can be caught up on a jet stream (喷气流) and blown away. A falling drone can do much damage (损害) to buildings and people.
Though drones can be harmful, they can be very helpful.
At a sports event, drones can be used to give the spectators (观众) a view from above or help coaches see how their players are doing.
They are also becoming a useful tool for firefighters, helping them find and fight wildfires. Drones can watch secretly on populations of animals in the wild, especially endangered ones.
In some faraway places in the world, drones are the fastest way to send medicine to people who are in great need of it.

The first emperor of China,Qin Shihuang, completed a huge number of projects during his rule.Between 221 and 210 B.C.,he started the building of the Great Wall. The emperor also ordered the building of a huge army of life﹣sized terracotta soldiers(士兵).These,he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death.
Lost in Time
The soldiers in Xi'an's terracotta museum are today light brown, but they weren't always. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple.Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present day. After being exposed(暴露)to air during digging, the coating under the paint began to fall off.The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking away with it important pieces of history.
New Technology
Now new technology is starting to show the army's true colors.Archeologists(考古学家)have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes.Chinese and German researchers have developed a chemical liquid(液体)to help save the soldiers' colors. After finding a soldier or another art piece, archeologists put the liquid on it. They then cover it in plastic.
Back to Life
Archeologists are also finding colors in the dirt around the soldiers. It's important not to do anything with the dirt,so the colors won't be lost. "We are treating the dirt as an art piece, "says Rong Bo,the museum's leading archeologist. The next challenge, says Rong Bo,is to find a way to use the colors onto the army﹣again.Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin's army back to its full, bright colors.
