Recently, China announced it had achieved success in drilling fire ice or methane hydrate(天然气水合物即,可燃冰), from the seabed in the shenhu area of the South China Sea. It produces high amount of energy when it is burned, leaving nothing but dioxide and water.

Many countries, including the United States and Japan, have long been doing research on methane hydrate, but taking it from bottom of the sea has been a common problem they are facing.According to reports.China succeeded in drilling methane hydrate for a number of days continuously and got an average of over 16,000 m 3 daily. It is believed to be a big breakthrough.

Scientists say there is about 21, 000 trillion( 万亿 )3 of methane hydrate in the world. If we can use it, it can meet the world's energy need for 1, 000 years. However, it is too early to say a new energy source (来源 ) has been found because we are still facing two main challenges﹣environmental risk and economic(经济的)cost. When methane hydrate is taken from the seabed, it may go into the air easily. That's very bad for the environment because methane is one of the worst greenhouse gases, Besides, drilling methane hydrate is very expensive as well.

However, China's technology breakthrough is very important because it shows the way researchers across the world should take. It also raises hopes that one day we can drill methane hydrate as a source of energy.

A. How to take it out from the bottom of the sea

B. How to turn it into useful energy at the lowest cost.

C. How to make it cheap on the future energy market.

D.How to change it into a traditional form of energy.

(3)Why is it too early to say a new energy source has been found?

A. Because it's too difficult to find the place where the fire ice lies and how to drill it.

B. Because it's not easy for fire ice to go into the air and be good for the environment.

C. Because it s quite impossible for fire ice to take the place of other sources of energy

D.Because it's expensive to drill fire ice and it may do great harm to the environment

(4)Where can we probably read the article?

A.In a storybook.

B.In a newspaper.

C.In a travel guide.

D.In a advertisement

When I was young,I lived in Scotland with my parents.I had a good time there.

One morning, I ran to the garden, and said to the old Scotsman who worked there. "Today I am going up the mountain for berries."

"No, no, Missey, not today. "he said, "It will rain."

"No, it will not rain. "I said, "The sun is up. The cook says it will be fine. The glass in the hall does not say rain.

"Tuts, tuts. "said the old man, "I care for no suns, or cooks, or glasses. The pimpernel (海绿)says it will rain, and so it will rain. Flowers, Missey, always tell the truth. When they say rain, go and get your umbrella."

Sure enough, by noon the rain was pouring down. After that, I looked with great respect at the tiny flower, sometimes brickred, sometimes blue, which could tell about the weather. But the pimpernel is not the only plant that is a weather prophet.

If you go into the garden, and find the African marigolds shut after seven o' clock in the morning, you may be pretty sure that there will be a rainy day. There is a little single marigold which shuts up in a hurry if the sky becomes clouded. It is called the "rainy﹣marigold".

Most plants which we call"weather prophets"shut up for rain. But some plants open for rain. The cause of the opening and closing is probably the difference in light. Most likely these plants shut their flowers because there is too little light.

But you know there are some plants which become smaller in a strong light and love the shade. You will find that most shade﹣ loving plants, as the verbenas, do not close for rain.

Lilies, tulips and other flowers that love the sun shut for rain. Tulips are careful not to open their cups very wide in the morning if it is likely to rain. The roses make no change. They seem not to fear wet.

On the whole, you may be pretty sure, if you go into your garden, and find many flowers﹣as tulips, marigolds and morning glories﹣﹣shut, it will be a stormy day, unfit for picnics or long walks.

(1)The plants which are"weather prophets"

A. become smaller in a strong light

B. tell about the weather

A. the morning glories and lilies do not shut

B. the African marigolds shut after 7: 00 a.m.

C. the pimpernels open wide in the daytime

D. the roses and tulips shut in the sunshine

(3)What do we know from the passage?

A. The flowers have four ways to help people to get information about weather.

B. The glass in the hall has magic for the writer's family to know about weather.

C. We can know about weather by keeping many roses at home or in the garden.

D. Missey will probably know about weather by watching flowers from now on.

(4)The passage is mainly about

A. watching flowers carefully before going out

B. learning to watch flowers from the old Scotsman

C. the importance of growing flowers in the garden

D. the relationship between some flowers and weather

Have you ever imagined what life will be like in 2060?An international group of forty scientists have made some surprising predictions. They said that in the next forty years, our lives would change beyond our wildest dreams.

Firstly, humans can grow body parts themselves.Dr.Ellen Heber﹣Katz is one of the forty scientists. He says, "People will think it common that sick organs (器官) can be repaired. It's just like the way we fix a car." Damaged parts will be taken away.Scientists could use human cells (细胞) to grow new organs.New technologies like this will also help people to live longer.Within forty years, most people will be able to live up to one hundred years.

Secondly, the scientists have predicted that a machine will be invented to "read" the minds of animals. In 2060,we will be able to "talk" to animals.Scientists say that humans may first "talk" with mammals (哺乳动物) and then other vertebrates (脊椎动物) such as fish.

Our houses might also change beyond our imagination.Dr.Susan Greenfield predicts that when you enter the living room, sensors (传感器) will know you. They will turn on the lights. If you talk to the lights, they will change to the color of your choice.

But what would be the biggest breakthrough (突破) over the next forty years?A number of scientists believe it would be the discovery of aliens.NASA scientist Chris Mckay says, "We may find aliens in space and talk with them." He believes marks of alien life may even be found here on Earth.

Does life in 2060 sound cool to you?Let's wait and see what will really happen then!

People can't see you when you're speaking on the phone, but they can hear you. So,the way you

speak is especially important. In fact, researchers have calculated that 80% of communication over the

phone is through your tone of voice; and only 20% is from the words you use. Here are our top tips on

how to speak over the phone.

1Facial Expressions

Your facial expression can influence your voice. For example,if you smile, your voice will sound warm and friendly, just the opposite,if you have an angry look on your face,it can make you sound unpleasant.

2Volume

If you speak too loudly, you could sound angry. And if you speak too softly,it'll be difficult to hear you. So,speak loudly enough to be heard clearly, but not so loud that you're shouting.

3Pace

The pace of your voice is how quickly you speak. And this can show how you feel. For example,an angry person might speak faster than normal.Or a downhearted person might speak very slowly.Try speaking a little more slowly than normal. This will make you sound confident, and it'll make it easier for the other person to understand you.

4Gestures

Gesturing can influence the tone of your voice. When you gesture, you bring more air into the lungs, which can make your voice sound warmer.Gestures are also useful to help you stress the right words or even find the words you need. The best thing about gesturing during a phone call is that no one can see what you're doing,so you can gesture as wildly as you like!

5Movement

If you're feeling nervous, stand up and move around. It will reduce the nervousness in your body and help your voice to sound more confident.

6Pauses (停顿)

Using pauses every now and then can help you to slow down. This will make you sound more confident and in control. Also,if you pause after giving some new information,it'll give the other person time to understand it.At the same time, listen to how the other person uses pauses. They could tell you something about the speaker's feeling. For example, when a speaker is really angry,he might use pauses and says,"I…am…so…angry…"

41.How much of telephone communication is from the words you use?

A.20%.

B.40%.

C.60%.

D.80%.

42.What can people do to reduce their nervousness on the phone?

A.Gesture wildly.

B.Move around.

C.Raise their voices.

D.Make facial expressions.

43.How can pauses help people talk on the phone?

A.The speaker can show he is friendly.

B.The speaker can tell more information.

C.The listener will feel confident and in control.

D.The listener will have time to understand the words.

44.What is the passage mainly about?

A.How to control the speed of your speech.

B.Different good ways of talking on the phone.

C.Reasons of making gestures while talking.

D.How to improve communication among friends.

45.What is the writer's opinion about telephone talk?

A.Your voice on the phone will show what you're feeling.

B.Using too many pauses while talking will annoy others.

C.Speaking loudly makes it easier for others to understand you.

D.The words you use are more important than the way you speak.

Historically, most cars have run on gasoline(汽油),but that may change in the future:cars can also run on other liquid fuels(液体燃料)and electricity.

Gasoline is from oil.The energy in gasoline comes from hydrocarbons(碳氢化合物).Gasoline provides great power for cars. However,it causes environmental problems, like air pollution and temperature rise.So gasoline can't be the best fuel.

Another choice is electricity.Electricity cars can be as efficient(效能好的)as cars using gasoline,And they produce less pollution. But electric cars themselves are more expensive.Good news is that the cost has been lower and there are more and more places for the cars to get electricity ever since 2010.

The other choices are other liquid fuels. Many of these can be stored in the same places as gasoline, and used in the same cars. They can also be friendly to the environment.

One way to make such fuels is to get CO 2from the air and put it in water.Through chemical reaction, hydrocarbons can be created. However, these fuels take up more space.

Another way is to make such fuels from plants which take in carbon from the air. These fuels are greener in use.But not all of them can be as efficient as gasoline.

For a fuel to be the best, people have to be able to afford it.Unluckily, almost every green technology is more expensive than that of using gasoline.Governments and car producers are doing everything they car to cut down the costs. In the end,the best fuel will be both affordable for car users and green for our planet.

The first emperor of China,Qin Shihuang, completed a huge number of projects during his rule.Between 221 and 210 B.C.,he started the building of the Great Wall. The emperor also ordered the building of a huge army of life﹣sized terracotta soldiers(士兵).These,he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death.

    Lost in Time

The soldiers in Xi'an's terracotta museum are today light brown, but they weren't always. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple.Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present day. After being exposed(暴露)to air during digging, the coating under the paint began to fall off.The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking away with it important pieces of history.

    New Technology

Now new technology is starting to show the army's true colors.Archeologists(考古学家)have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes.Chinese and German researchers have developed a chemical liquid(液体)to help save the soldiers' colors. After finding a soldier or another art piece, archeologists put the liquid on it. They then cover it in plastic.

    Back to Life

Archeologists are also finding colors in the dirt around the soldiers. It's important not to do anything with the dirt,so the colors won't be lost. "We are treating the dirt as an art piece, "says Rong Bo,the museum's leading archeologist. The next challenge, says Rong Bo,is to find a way to use the colors onto the army﹣again.Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin's army back to its full, bright colors.

Zhu Keming never thought he would be a hero one day,but he was just that on Saturday when he saved the lives of six runners during the mountain marathon (马拉松)in Baiyin,Gansu Province,in which 21 people lost their lives.

It started off as a normal day for the 49﹣year﹣old shepherd who was taking care of his more than 30 sheep on the mountainside. But soon the weather was terrible, with rainfall and hail. The rain got so heavy that he couldn't see clearly and had to run into a cave where he normally went to have a rest.Soon he fell asleep in the cave after covering himself with some quilts he had stored there.

But he was awakened at 2 pm by an unusual sound that was not coming from his sheep. The sound that woke Zhu was the cry of a runner in the marathon. He was wet from head to toe and trembling because of cold.Zhu took him into the cave, lit a fire and covered the stricken (受伤的)runner with his quilts.

Zhu said that there were soon five runners huddling (挤作一团)in the cave, and he then decided to go outside to try to attract the attention of rescuers (救援者).When he risked coming out of the cave,he found another stricken runner lying on the ground in bad condition. Then the other runners came out of the cave to give a hand.Zhu and the six runners remained huddled around the fire in his cave until 7 pm,when the rescue team arrived.

" I just did what I had to when I saw that these people were in danger.I think everyone would do the same thing in such a situation, "Zhu said to Beijing News.
