Have you ever entered a tropical rainforest(热带雨林)?Rainforests make up only a small part of the Earth's surface, about six percent, but there are more kinds of tees than any other area in the whole world.
Tropical rainforests are in Africa,Asia,Central and South America,Australia, and on the Pacific islands. The largest tropical rainforest is the Amazon(亚马逊)Rainforest in South America, which covers 1.2 billion acres,or almost five million square kilometres. The second largest rainforest is in Western Africa.
Rainforests provide us with many things. In fact, the Amazon Rainforest is the "lungs of our planet" because it produces 20%of the world's oxygen (氧气).One fifth of the world's fresh water is also found in the Amazon Rainforest.Furthermore, one half of the world's species of animals, plants and insects live in the Earth's rainforests.80% of the food we eat first grew in the rainforest.25%of the drugs we take when we are sick are made of plants that grow only in rainforests. Some of these drugs are even used to fight and cure cancer.
There are four different levels of trees in a rainforest. The forest floor is the lowest layer full of animal life and receives the least amount of light. The under storey is the dark, cool environment under the leaves but over the ground. The canopy layer is the upper parts of most of the trees. The emergent layer contains a small number of very tall trees.
These different parts of a rainforest exist together to create an ecosystem for many animals, plants and human beings.

What time does your school start?Do you wish you could get up later every morning? You are not alone if your answer is "Yes." In the US,many middle school students have the same wish.
In America, many schools start before 7:30 am.But that may change soon.A new law has been passed in California.According to the law, middle schools should not start before 8:00 am.The government hopes school children will have longer time in bed.
Many scientific studies show that teenagers are more active in the afternoon and in the evening.Simply telling them to go to bed earlier doesn't work well. Most of them don't get enough sleep because of bad sleeping habits and early school starting time. They need more sleep in the morning.Scientists suggest middle schools should start at 8:00 am.or later.Students can get well ready to learn and they won't fall asleep in class.______The change can help improve students' grades.

I came to the United States from Africa to live with my uncle Jim in Maryland. One year later,I lost my sight because of a serious illness.
Jim told me not to go out.He worried I would get lost or hit by a car.But I was dogged.I told him I'd pay attention.I believed I'd succeed.I must succeed.I must put my will into action.I dreamed of being a broadcaster.
Then a neighbor told me that a public library in Washington D.C.was offering a free course, specially designed for blind people,This was an important chance for me.
But how would I map my way?I knew that the American singer Ray Charles, also blind, got around on his own without a cane (手杖).His secret was to count steps. But I couldn't seem to do that way.Instead I developed my imagination.sensing the layout (布局)of places I Visited and taking notes of landmarks in my mind.
At first,I would have to stop to imagine and map a new space in my mind,The next time I visited that place,I'd use that to find the way.Today.I am used to doing it,But I've still lost my way many times.I'd have to swallow my pride to ask for help, not thinking what others think or say about me.
Sometimes I'd be down and I'd consider giving up.Perhaps my uncle was right.Maybe I'd stay home and wait until someone came to help.On those days when I lost my way,I'd go to bed with a bad feeling.▲.I had e strong wish 10 bear blindness and be successful, and that was usually enough to get me out of bed the next day and try again.
Along the way I learned to be patient with myself and realized that asking for help didn't diminish (贬低)me in any way,I've got three academic degrees so far.
Today,I'm a reporter and broadcaster.I've achieved my dream.
Yes,I've lost my way many times and found it again.Yes,I've come close to being hit by a car but never bee hit by one. When people ask, "Aren't you afraid to be out alone?" the answer to me is clear;I would face danger and find happiness instead of staying home and being unhappy.

With her eyes feeling increasingly tired and her vision blurry(视力模糊的),l6﹣year﹣old Tian Ting went to the hospital with her parents in January. She was shocked when she found out that her eyesight dropped from 5.0 to 4.6 in only a term. "A few of my friends have had the same experience lately," Tian said.
In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students rose from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first six months of 2020,according to the Ministry of Education.
To protect students' eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements (要求) for school supplies (供应品) and equipments that will take effect (生效) on March 1,2022.For example, according to the requirements, the size of text in students' textbooks should be no smaller than nine﹣point.Teachers should also try not to use projectors (投影仪) or other multimedia equipments (多媒体设备) that are too bright,Beijing Daily reported. There are also requirements for desks and classroom lights. For example, these lights should give off (散发) as little blue light as possible.
Blue light is bad for our eyes,as it can kill the photoreceptor cells (光感器细胞) we need for vision, according to Harvard Medical School. Many of the electronic devices we use every day, like our phones and computer screens, give off blue light.
Chinese government has also taken other steps to protect students' eyesight in China. In May 2020,the National Health Commission urged schools to make sure that students have at least two hours of outdoor activity a day.

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information,do people remember less?if you know your computer will store information, why do you store it in your own personal memory, your brain?Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study,Professor Betsy Sparrow made some experiments(实验).She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory.
In the first experiment, they asked two groups of people to put 40 unimportant facts into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would store the information. The second group understood that the computer would not store it.Later, the second group remembered the information better.People in the first group knew they could find the information again,so they did not try to remember it.
In the second experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in an exact in an exact computer folder(文件夹).Surprisingly, people later remember where the folder is better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. However, they remember how to find it.This is called "transitive memory (交互记忆)".
According to Sparrow,we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet.Instead, computer users are developing stronger transitive memories;that is,people are learning how to organize a lot of information so that they are able to get it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less clever, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
(1)Why does the writer begin the text with two questions?
A.To explain some thoughts.
B.To introduce the main topic.
C.To show an opinion.
D.To draw the readers' attention.
(2)What can we learn form the first experiment?
A.Sparrow put the information into the computer.
B.Both groups remember the information well.
C.Group 1 remembered the information faster.
D.Group 2 remembered the information better.
(3)What do we know about transitive memory from the second experiment?
A.People organize the information like a computer.
B.People remember how to find the information.
C.People remember how to make a folder.
D.People keep the information in mind.
(4)What's Professor Betsy Sparrow's conclusion(结论)?
A.People become more and more clever.
B.The way people use memory is changing.
C.The way people make experiments is changing.
D.People's memories become poorer than before.
Most viruses can be found and killed by our immune system as soon as they enter our bodies. However, some viruses, for example, the coronavirus, are sneaky. They are difficult to recognize and find. These viruses can cause deadly diseases, like COVID﹣19.Human﹣to﹣human transmission can easily occur, and pandemic will therefore break out.Vaccination is by now a simple, safe and effective way to protect us from the diseases.
▲Vaccines are something that "looks" exactly the same as the viruses, mainly made from the viruses that are weakened or killed. They will not make us really ill. They only stimulate and activate our immune system to work, telling it something harmful is coming in.The immune system will know what the "viruses" look like, and send B cells(lymphocytes)or antibodies to find and kill them.Meanwhile,B cells will remember them for the next kill.A vaccine may also give us passive immunity by providing B cells taken from an animal or a human to play the same role.
Scientists have developed more than 180 vaccines to fight against COVID49.The technical approaches of these vaccines can be a little different, but their aims are the same.
Take the inactivated vaccine as an example. In an inactivated vaccine, the coronaviruses are already killed or made into the ones unable to produce more new viruses. When the immune system "sees" them,it will try to kill them. The question is:without enough these viruses• how can B cells remember them? That's why we need to take the vaccine more than one time.Though this vaccine is safe,it might not be as effective as it is expected to be.
The live﹣attenuated vaccine is different. In this vaccine, the viruses are weakened, but they are alive. They can produce enough new viruses to train the immune system to kill and remember them,so people only need to take the vaccine once. The live﹣attenuated vaccine is considered the most effective, but there is a worry:what might happen once these viruses wake up?
Therefore, although vaccination is by now one of the best ways to protect us from COVID﹣19,it can be better.

One cannot discuss Chinese music without mentioning the guqin, one of the four arts-along with game of go,calligraphy(书法)and painting. It first appeared over 3,000 years ago and stands for China's solo musical instrument tradition.
At first, the guqin had only five strings(弓玄),meaning the five elements(元素)of metal, wood, water, fire and earth.Later,in Zhou Dynasty,King Wen of Zhou added a sixth string for his son.King Wu of Zhou, added a seventh string to encourage his army to fight with the Shang.
Ambiencewas important in playing the guqin.Usually,it was practiced in a quiet setting and never for public performance.Ancient artists enjoyed performing by a stream in the mountains. The sound of the guqin mixed with the echoes(回音)from the mountains, until the musician felt he was at one with nature.Playing it in snow was also an enjoyable activity for ancient artists, who believed the instrument was the purest of its kind in the world. Also,a night with moonlight was considered wonderful for playing the guqin.Wang Wei(701-761),a highly talented man of the Tang Dynasty, liked playing it in a bamboo forest on nights with moonlight most.
Guqin pieces are usually three to eight minutes long, with the longest being Guangling Verse, which is 22 minutes long.Other famous pieces include Plum Blossoms in Three Movements,Wild Geese Landing on the Sandbank and Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute.
Nowadays, there are fewer than one thousand well﹣trained guqin players and perhaps no more than fifty living masters. The original number of several thousand pieces has greatly reduced to only one hundred works by today. The guqin and its music was added to the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity(人类非物质文化遗产)in 2003.

Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why? Some people think kindness is something out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular. But research shows that being kind can activate (激活)an area of the brain called Striatum.Research also shows that kindness improves people's mood (情绪).But why and how does it happen? Here are a number of different ways.
Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile in a situation, people around may be smiling, too. This is specially true for your close friends and family .A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. Itcan also make ourselves fee good.So why not set off that chain(链条)of good feelings to people around?
Secondly, being kind starts or develops a social connection with others.Kind acts like buying someone a present make friendships stronger.Research has shown that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself.Similarly, charities(慈善)also open up new circles of people to connect with someone on the other side of the world.
In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind,he or she makes others in the group kind.It also lifts everyone's spirits.Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you're getting cakes a lot more days than providing them.
The story doesn't end here.Being kind may improve your mood, but research has also shown that if you're in a good mood, you can act much more kindly. This makes it a wonderful two﹣way relationship, doesn't it?

Boyan Slat has been dreaming of cleaning up the world's oceans for a long time.
In 2010,he went on a diving (潜水)vacation in Greece and was shocked."I saw more plastic bags than fish in the water," he said.
From then on,Slat began to pay more attention to ocean pollution. He decided to give up higher education and set up the Ocean Cleanup,a non﹣government organization. Its purpose is to clean up ocean rubbish. He has set up the world's first ocean cleanup system ( 系统)with his team.
Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, and it can take up to 500 years to break down.In 2018,the World Economic Forum predicted that the weight of ocean plastic would match that of all the fish in our oceans by 2050.Sea animals easily get caught in plastic. They can't move. They can even die if they eat it.Smaller plastic pieces can also enter the food chain (链)and end up in our bodies.
Slat's plan was to create an environmentally﹣friendly, large system to clear out plastic rubbish from the ocean.
After seven years of tests,on October 2nd,2019,a machine called System 001/B came out.It successfully caught and collected a large amount of plastic rubbish floating in the ocean.
Slat and his team are working to improve System 001/B.Their dream is to clear out 90 percent of all the ocean plastic by 2040.
