初中英语

With so much free time on our hands during lockdown, many of us have entertained the idea of knowing more about the world. Learning a foreign language is a good choice. Here are a few examples, in order of time it takes people to learn them.

    Latin languages (about 600 hours)

The popular Latin languages ﹣ Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese ﹣ require about 600 hours to learn. Of these, Spanish and Italian are the easiest for English speakers to learn. They are followed by Portuguese and finally French.

Latin languages share many words with English. However, those shared words look or sound similar, but have different meanings over time.

    Greek (1,100 hours)

Modern Greek is maybe the easiest language to learn that uses a different alphabet(字母表).It is also a language that has contributed many words to English. Indeed, the president of Greece once gave two speeches at an international meeting that included just Greek loan words(外来词) as well as the unavoidable basic English.

    Japanese (2, 200 hours)

Counting objects in Japanese depends on whether they are long and thin (like "roads"), small and round (like "apples"), thin and flat (like "sheets of paper"), and hundreds more examples.

What Japanese you speak also depends on your gender(性别). There's a "rough" language for men and a more "ladylike" language for women, but you must understand both.

    Chinese (2, 200 hours)

Each Chinese written word is hardly understandable when spoken between a Mandarin (普通话) speaker in Beijing and a Cantonese speaker in Guangdong. If you think that's strange, consider our number system: the symbol "2" is widely understood but it's pronounced "two" in English and "duex" in French.

(1)For an English speaker, which of the following is the easiest to learn?

A. Japanese.

B. French.

C. Greek.

D. Italian.

(2)What can we learn from the passage?

A. The same word in two languages always has the same meaning.

B. The English language and the Greek language use the same alphabet.

C. Objects are counted differently in Japanese according to their shapes.

D. A Mandarin speaker and a Cantonese speaker write Chinese differently.

(3)The purpose of this passage is to tell English speakers

A. how to learn some foreign languages

B. why they must learn a foreign language

C. some information on the difficulty of foreign languages

D. not to choose an Asian language to learn as it is too hard

What do you do with your rubbish?Throw it out?You don't know what you're missing!Look closely at the two figures on your left. They were made from things most people throw away. The figures were made from used bottle caps. Those two bottle﹣cap figures were exhibited (展示) in a museum.

Folk art is art made by common people who have not been trained as artists.Their work is often based on traditions in their culture.Fine art,on the other hand,is usually made by people who have had training in art.Works of fine art are valued for their artistic beauty. They are supposed to be looked at but not used.Works of folk art, however, are often made for everyday use.

Earlier this year, China achieved a new milestone (里程碑) in space research. On January 3, 2019, Chang'e﹣4 became the first lunar probe (月球探测器) in history to successfully land on the far side of the moon.

The Earth's gravity (重力) slows the moon's rotation (自转), matching it to the speed of its orbit (公转). Therefore, the far side of the moon is almost "dark" and has never been seen. It's this sense of the unknown that makes the far side of the moon such an interesting place for scientific and space research. Being blown by solar (太阳的) winds, the far side may have the special minerals (矿物质 ). For this reason, Chang'e﹣4 will study the effect of solar winds on the lunar surface and any mineral found by the spacecraft. Chang'e﹣4 is also carrying flower seeds, potatoes and silkworm eggs to see whether life is possible on the moon. If it is, then the moon will become a possible choice for space travel in the future.

However, research of the "dark" side isn't easy. As the far side is blocked(阻断) off from us, radio noise coming off Earth is also blocked. This is why China's relay satellite (中继卫星) Queqiao was sent up in May, 2018. Thanks to Queqiao, the communication problem between Earth and Chang'e﹣4 has been well solved.

Power supply (电源供应) is also a challenge to the task. Chang'e﹣4 gets energy from the sun through its solar panels. As we know, a lunar day has the length (长度) of 28 Earth days. After Chang'e﹣4 was sent up on December 8, 2018, it took the probe over 20 days to orbit the moon to be in a position to be able to land in moon daylight and use its solar panels.

Luckily, everything goes well, Chang'e﹣4 has worked on the "dark" side for over 5 months. It has sent back many photos of the far side of the moon and has been used to carry out some scientific experiments.

The New York Times used the word " groundbreaking" to praise the task and wrote that "it will offer help to the history and development of the moon".

(1)When was Chang'e﹣4 sent up?

A. In May, 2018.

B. On December 8, 2018.

C. On January 3, 2019.

D. The passage doesn't tell us.

(2)The main tasks of Chang'e﹣4 don't include

A. studying if life is possible on the moon

B. studying the effect of solar winds on the lunar surface

C. solving the communication problem between Earth and other probes

D. researching any mineral found by the spacecraft

(3)The meaning of the underlined word "groundbreaking" in the last paragraph is the closest to " ".

A. harmful

B. unpredictable

C. risky

D. pioneering

(4)According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Chang'e﹣4 has sent back many photos of the far side of the moon.

B. A lunar day has the length of 28 Earth days.

C. China's relay satellite Queqiao was sent up in order to offer power supply to probes.

D. Chang'e﹣4 is the first lunar probe in history that has successfully landed on the "dark" side of the moon.

Boyan Slat has been dreaming of cleaning up the world's oceans for a long time.

In 2010,he went on a diving (潜水)vacation in Greece and was shocked."I saw more plastic bags than fish in the water," he said.

From then on,Slat began to pay more attention to ocean pollution. He decided to give up higher education and set up the Ocean Cleanup,a non﹣government organization. Its purpose is to clean up ocean rubbish. He has set up the world's first ocean cleanup system ( 系统)with his team.

Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, and it can take up to 500 years to break down.In 2018,the World Economic Forum predicted that the weight of ocean plastic would match that of all the fish in our oceans by 2050.Sea animals easily get caught in plastic. They can't move. They can even die if they eat it.Smaller plastic pieces can also enter the food chain (链)and end up in our bodies.

Slat's plan was to create an environmentally﹣friendly, large system to clear out plastic rubbish from the ocean.

After seven years of tests,on October 2nd,2019,a machine called System 001/B came out.It successfully caught and collected a large amount of plastic rubbish floating in the ocean.

Slat and his team are working to improve System 001/B.Their dream is to clear out 90 percent of all the ocean plastic by 2040.

Say you're sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites."Oh,that game's easy.So not worth the time,"one of your friends says. The others agree.Although you enjoy the game quite a lot,not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the crowd.

You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure(同伴压力),also called peer

influence. You will adopt a certain type of behavior, dress,or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your"peers".As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the effect of peer pressure in a number of different areas.

We are all influenced by our peers at any age.For teens,as school and other activities take you away

from home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become more

independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life.

According to Dr.Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisions

on their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in the

heat of the momentor in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers. In a

recent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. The

researchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends were

watching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around,or in situations where they are extremely angry.

Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones.A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it,or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study,or try out for sports.

While we are always influenced by those around us,the decision to act or not is up to us.So when it

comes to decision making, the choice is up to you.

A.Teens are eager to be different from their peers.

B.Peer pressure has effects on both teens and adults.
