Most viruses can be found and killed by our immune system as soon as they enter our bodies. However, some viruses, for example, the coronavirus, are sneaky. They are difficult to recognize and find. These viruses can cause deadly diseases, like COVID﹣19.Human﹣to﹣human transmission can easily occur, and pandemic will therefore break out.Vaccination is by now a simple, safe and effective way to protect us from the diseases.
▲Vaccines are something that "looks" exactly the same as the viruses, mainly made from the viruses that are weakened or killed. They will not make us really ill. They only stimulate and activate our immune system to work, telling it something harmful is coming in.The immune system will know what the "viruses" look like, and send B cells(lymphocytes)or antibodies to find and kill them.Meanwhile,B cells will remember them for the next kill.A vaccine may also give us passive immunity by providing B cells taken from an animal or a human to play the same role.
Scientists have developed more than 180 vaccines to fight against COVID49.The technical approaches of these vaccines can be a little different, but their aims are the same.
Take the inactivated vaccine as an example. In an inactivated vaccine, the coronaviruses are already killed or made into the ones unable to produce more new viruses. When the immune system "sees" them,it will try to kill them. The question is:without enough these viruses• how can B cells remember them? That's why we need to take the vaccine more than one time.Though this vaccine is safe,it might not be as effective as it is expected to be.
The live﹣attenuated vaccine is different. In this vaccine, the viruses are weakened, but they are alive. They can produce enough new viruses to train the immune system to kill and remember them,so people only need to take the vaccine once. The live﹣attenuated vaccine is considered the most effective, but there is a worry:what might happen once these viruses wake up?
Therefore, although vaccination is by now one of the best ways to protect us from COVID﹣19,it can be better.

Boyan Slat has been dreaming of cleaning up the world's oceans for a long time.
In 2010,he went on a diving (潜水)vacation in Greece and was shocked."I saw more plastic bags than fish in the water," he said.
From then on,Slat began to pay more attention to ocean pollution. He decided to give up higher education and set up the Ocean Cleanup,a non﹣government organization. Its purpose is to clean up ocean rubbish. He has set up the world's first ocean cleanup system ( 系统)with his team.
Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, and it can take up to 500 years to break down.In 2018,the World Economic Forum predicted that the weight of ocean plastic would match that of all the fish in our oceans by 2050.Sea animals easily get caught in plastic. They can't move. They can even die if they eat it.Smaller plastic pieces can also enter the food chain (链)and end up in our bodies.
Slat's plan was to create an environmentally﹣friendly, large system to clear out plastic rubbish from the ocean.
After seven years of tests,on October 2nd,2019,a machine called System 001/B came out.It successfully caught and collected a large amount of plastic rubbish floating in the ocean.

The Brightest Star in the Sky
Yuan Longping is one of the most famous scientists. He regards himself as a farmer because he does his research in the fields. In fact, his sunburnt face and arms and his slim, strong body are just like those of millions of farmers.Dr.Yuan Longping grows what is called super hybrid (杂交性的) rice.In 1974,he became the first agricultural (农业的) pioneer in the word to grow rice hat has a high output(产量).This special rice makes it possible to produce one﹣third more of the crop in the same fields. Now more than 60% of the rice produced in China each year is from the hybrid rice strain (品种,种类).He was born in Beijing in 1930.Since he graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953,finding ways to grow more rice has been his life goal.He searched for a way to increase rice harvests without expanding (扩大,增加) the area of the fields.
In a recent research, these increased harvests mean that 22% of the world's people are fed from just 7% of the farmland in China.India,Vietnam and many other less developed countries have planted super hybrid rice to increase their rice harvests.
Unluckily,he died on May 22,2021.Though he was ill in bed,he still cared about his rice in the fields. He always said,"A man is just like a seed. Please be a good seed." Yuan works for the people not only in China but also around the world. He has become a hero and is remembered in everyone's heart forever. He is called "the brightest star in the sky" by his students.

Say you're sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites."Oh,that game's easy.So not worth the time,"one of your friends says. The others agree.Although you enjoy the game quite a lot,not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the crowd.
You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure(同伴压力),also called peer
influence. You will adopt a certain type of behavior, dress,or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your"peers".As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the effect of peer pressure in a number of different areas.
We are all influenced by our peers at any age.For teens,as school and other activities take you away
from home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become more
independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life.
According to Dr.Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisions
on their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in the
heat of the momentor in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers. In a
recent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. The
researchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends were
watching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around,or in situations where they are extremely angry.
Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones.A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it,or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study,or try out for sports.
While we are always influenced by those around us,the decision to act or not is up to us.So when it
comes to decision making, the choice is up to you.
