初中英语

"Keep your eyes on your own paper" is one of the rules that Mrs. Archer has taught us. It is a simple rule, but it's not a rule everybody chooses to follow.

This morning, I had an experience with a "rule breaker" during an English exam. I felt somebody was watching me a little too closely. I turned my head quickly and saw James, who sat right behind me. My eyes caught his and he said in a low voice. "I hope you studied for this test!" I gave him a smile, not sure whether he was joking or not, and returned to my test. This time I leaned (倾身) a little more closely towards my paper, "I can't see!" James said.

"What am I going to do?" I thought to myself. Cheating (欺骗) went against my beliefs. I curled my arm around my answers.

"He's your friendand what are friends for"

    "You know it's wrong"

I tapped (轻敲,轻拍) the top of my desk, hoping for an easy way out of this matter. No easy answer came. I just knew I had to do what I felt was right, even if it made James mad. So I guarded my paper so that he couldn't see my answers.

When the exam ended, I stood there for a moment, searching for the right words to say to James. "Sorry, James, but you know me well enough to understand how I feel about cheating," I said slowly and softly. "But maybe I could help you study before the next test." "OK, Brian," he smiled. "It might not be easy, but I'll give it a try."

I felt happy that my friendship with James hadn't been destroyed (破坏). Mrs. Archer would be proud.

Group: Buffy, Debby, Jamie, Albert, Matt …(7)

Hey, guys! I have a lot of things I don't need, so I'm thinking about having a yard sale. What do you think?

Thank you!

Having a yard sale is not easy. You have to collect things, put prices on them, put them out on tables and then wait for people to come. And usually you have to sell things at VERY low prices. For all that time and work, you make very little money. Why not just sell your things online for higher prices?

Debby's right. But I think it'd be even better to just give your things to people who need them. I just sent out a lot of things last week.

Hey, I love yard sales! It's a great chance to make big money if you choose the right day. In my experience, Saturday is the best.

I agree with Albert. You can make money and meet interesting people. I made some good friends at my last yard sale.

(1)Why does Buffy start the chatting (聊天)?

A. To ask her friends for advice.

B. To sell things to the group members.

C. To invite her friends to go to a yard sale.

D. To explain how to deal with useless things.

(2)What is Debby's opinion?

A. A yard sale could make much more money.

B. You have to wait long for people to come.

C. A yard sale is not worth the time and work.

D. Online selling takes too much time and work.

(3)Which of the following best describes Jamie?

A. Honest.

B. Clever.

C. Hard﹣working.

D. Kind﹣hearted.

(4)Who support(s) Buffy's idea?

A. Debby and Jamie.

B. Only Albert.

C. Only Matt.

A tornado (龙卷风) is a kind of strong storm with air which moves in a circle quickly. They can move over 200 miles per hour and cause a lot of damage (损坏). As they move across the land, they can easily pick up cars, trucks, and even houses, and then throw them very far. It is important to find a safe place if a tornado gets close.

A safe place could be a basement (地下室) or the lowest floor. If you are in a home without a basement, try to find a first﹣floor bathroom or a small room without windows in the middle of your house. You should curl up (蜷缩) into a ball and cover your head and neck with your hands.

But there are some people who actually want to get close to tornadoes. They are scientists who want to learn more about tornadoes. One of the best ways to do this is to get as close as possible to the tornado. They use special tools to measure (测量) what is happening in and around a tornado.

One special tool is called a tornado probe (探测仪). Inside the tornado probe, there are sensors (传感器) to measure wind speed, temperature, pressure, and direction. Some probes even have cameras, so the scientists can see and understand what it's like to be in a tornado.

To be able to get these measurements, the scientists have to get a tornado probe near or into a tornado.Scientists will try to guess where a tornado will go next. Then they drive to that location and put down the probe. If they do not guess correctly, they pick up their probe and try another place. If they are right, the tornado will go near or even right over the probe. Then they take all of the measurements from the probe and use them to predict where future tornadoes may form (形成)and travel. And they can give people some warning to keep away from a dangerous tornado.

(1)If a tornado gets close, what should people do to keep safe?

A. Go to a basement.

B. Find a small room.

C. Stay in a bathroom.

D. Curl the legs up.

(2)What can the sensor in a probe NOT do?

A. Measure wind speed and temperature.

B. Take photos and videos.

C. Measure wind temperature and pressure.

(3)Which statement about the scientists is TRUE?

A. They risk their lives studying tornadoes.

B. They can easily put the probe in the right place.

C. They get close to a tormado to admire it.

D. With the help of the measurements, they can prevent the tornado forming.

(4)The passage mainly tells us

A. what a tornado is

Once upon a time there lived a great storyteller whose stories gave both children and adults a lot of pleasure and enjoyment. He told a story about an emperor who loved new clothes and about a tiny girl who was no taller than a person's thumb (拇指).

Animals are our friends. Sometimes they make trouble, but sometimes they can help us.And they hope to live a happy life, too. Here are two real stories from our readers.

The first story is from Ray."My cat, Tiger, hates it when I use my iPad because it takes my attention away from him. One year, I had a fall at home and was on the floor for 16 hours, During this time, I was unable to move and couldn't get to the phone to call for help. Tiger stayed by my side until he disappeared under my bed. 'What's he up to?' I wondered. To my surprise, he started to push something towards me. It was my iPad,which I didn't realize had fallen off the bed and onto the floor. He probably didn't know what it was, but he knew that it made me happy. Thanks to Tiger, I was able to communicate with my friend, Becky, who then told my doctor."

The second story is from Colin. "Years ago, my friend Julius saved a bird﹣a wild 'Mom' cockatoo(鹦鹉) from the side of the road and kept it as a pet in a big cage(笼子).It lost one of her wings, so she was unable to return to the wild. Soon, two wild cockatoos came visiting and one 'Dad' bird wanted to find his way into the cage. The 'Mom' cockatoo in the cage was soon expecting. Katie Steller has her own salon (美发院). She often wheels her red chair and scissors around the city to give free haircuts.

Edward was her first lucky customer. He looked to be in his 60s. He was balding and missing a few teeth. While she was cutting his greying hair, he told her about moving closer to his adult children.

Till now, Steller has offered about 30 such haircuts. These people are all living a hard time, and she is aware of the power of her cleanup job.

"Its more than a haircut," she says. "I want it to be a gateway, to show value and respect, but also to get to know people. I want to build relationships. "

Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. As a teen, she had a very serious disease and her hair thinned terribly. Her mother took Steller for her first professional haircut.

"To sit down and have somebody look at me and talk to me like a person and not just an illness, it helped me feel cared about and less alone," she says.

After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own salon so she could help people feel the way she’d felt that day. In 2019, she began her Red Chair Project.

She says, "I can’t fix their problems with free haircuts, but maybe I can help them feel less alone for a moment."

Early this year she started the Steller Kindness Project, in which people who do acts of kindness (volunteering for snowstorm relief, helping neighbors in need) are invited for a free haircut at Steller’s salon. In exchange, they tell their stories, which Steller shares on her website. Her hope is that by reading about kind acts, others will spread their own.

As a kid, I walked to the library several times a week and stayed up late reading. I checked out so many books and returned them so quickly the librarian once snapped, "Don’t take home so many books if you’re not going to read them all."

"But I did read them all," I said.

In college, when I created my online dating(约会) profile, in the " favorite books" section I put One Hundred Years of Solitude, A Moveable Feast, White Fang and so on. But I realized I hadn’t read most of those titles for two years.

David was my first online date. David read about a book or two a week. When we compared libraries, we had only four titles in common.

On our seventh date, David and I visited the library.

"I have a game," he said, taking out two pens and Postits(便利贴). Let’s find books we’ve read and leave reviews in them for the next person. "

We stayed there for an hour.

Before leaving, I said, "I will tell you something. I’ve only read one book this year. "

"But you like books, "he said. "You like bookstores. You like libraries. Read a book!"

Back home, David's charge to "read a book" echoed in my head. I bought books whenever I got the chance, but I hardly read them. They sat on every surface until my house appeared to wear books the way one wears clothes.

I picked up one. Whenever I wanted to give up on it, I thought of David.______________

    "How’s your day?" David texted.

"Good. A little tired, "I replied. "I stayed up late and finished my book. "The last time I'd pulled an allnighter to read, I was 12 and the book was Little Women.

David suggested we visit the library again. He pulled a book from the shelf, dropped to one knee, and opened it. Inside, his Postit read:"Karla, it has always been you. Will you marry me? "
