February 29th comes up on the calendar only every four years.A year with a February 29th might be good news if you are paid by the day or the week. But it might be bad news if you were born on a February 29th.You have to wait three years in between birthdays!

American English has an expression for the unusual situation. February 29th is called a leap day. And the year with a February 29th in it is called a leap year. This year, 2020, is such a year.

As a verb, the word "leap" means to jump, or to move quickly."Leap" can also be a noun, meaning a jump, or a sudden move.

In a leap year, the dates jump over one day of the week. Let me explain. In 2017,the last day of the year, December 31st , fell on a Sunday. In 2018, it fell on a Monday. In 2019, it fell on a Tuesday. But in 2020, December 31st will fall on a Thursday. It jumps right over Wednesday.

The reason for a leap day or a leap year is because our calendar does not follow the earth's orbit(轨道)around the sun exactly. Each year, we have a little time left over. So every four years,we put all that time together into an extra(额外的) day.

Some people choose to marry on February 29th because it is an unusual date. But some ancient peoples would likely tell couples not to do it. Leap years were believed to be difficult, and leap days were unlucky. To be honest, these have no scientific basis(依据).

Anger (愤怒) often makes us uncomfortable. Seeing your child's anger can be especially uncomfortable. In order to relieve (缓解) this feeling, parents often encourage children to "stop crying" and say things like "It's nothing to cry about." It's moments like those that plant the seeds of unhealthy anger. The "stop crying" parents are just doing what they were taught by their own parents, who were probably taught that by their parents on and on. However, we should learn how to create healthy anger in our kids.

If a child never sees his or her parents express anger, he or she should never express anger, either. But if parents always express their anger loudly, their child may start to think of anger as something that is always frightening.

The first thing you can do to create healthy anger in your children is to practice creating healthy anger in yourself. Once you're better at experiencing anger and expressing it in a healthy way, you'll be able to set a good example for your kids.

Stopping kids from expressing their feelings is wrong. You may feel bad when you believe you are wrong. When children express their feelings and are told that it's nothing to cry about, they come to know that they themselves are bad.

We need to raise them in an environment where it's safe to express feelings. Once you feel more comfortable with your own anger, you can teach your children why anger is a helpful feeling. When your kids express anger, help them examine what it is that has made them angry. Why did it make them angry? How did it do that? Then, you can teach them that those feelings are never wrong and our expressions of feelings are in our control.

Anger is natural and normal, and it can be experienced and expressed in a healthy way.

(1)Why do parents say "It's nothing to cry about" to their children?

A. To encourage them to stop crying.

B. To make them uncomfortable.

C. To relieve their anger.

D. To plant the seeds of unhealthy anger.

(2)From the second paragraph we can infer (推断)

A. parents have a great influence on their children

B. parents should get angry with their children

C. expressing anger loudly is right, not wrong

D. children should express their anger like their parents

(3)Parents should set a good example for children by

A. stopping them from expressing their anger

B. expressing their own anger in a healthy way

C. letting them know they are right or wrong

D. raising them in a safe environment

(4)The writer thinks that anger is a kind of feeling that is always

A. wrong

B. uncomfortable

C. harmful

D. helpful

(5)What's the main idea of the passage?

A. Anger often makes us and our children uncomfortable.

B. Parents should create healthy anger in themselves.

C. Parents should create healthy anger in their kids.

D. Parents should never express their anger.

For many tests and exams, you are tested on your abilities to communicate successfully. In order to speak English fluently, you need to think in English. If you don't, your speech will be slow and it won't sound natural. Here are some things you can do to practice thinking in English.

•Look at objects around your home and school, and think of what they are called in English. Try to make a direct connection between the object and the English word.

•When you have to say something in English, think first and ask yourself," What words and phrases do I know in English that I can use in this situation?" Try not to think in your first language and translate your ideas into English. If you do, you will get frustrated very quickly.

Where you sit and how you fit

    (1) For more than seventy years, researchers and teachers have studied the link between the place where students choose to sit in class and what they are like as people and learners.Where do you usually decide to sit? Have you ever really thought about the reasons for your decision?

    (2) But is this really true? Well, some researchers say it is not.In fact, shy students often choose the back row because it is far away from the teacher and they don′t want to answer questions,At the back, students probably won't speak much, but in big classrooms,it can be hard to see the board and hear what the teacher is saying. This could be the reason why students who sit here often get lower grades on tests and exams. For students with poor eyesight or hearing,a seat at the back of the classroom is not a good choice.

    (3) However, they like watching and listening rather than joining in.These students are usually also very good at taking notes.Next time you miss a class, borrow notes from someone who sits here.On the sides of the classroom you will generally find modest and thoughtful people. These people usually get good grades in school and are interested in learning.

    (4) Then the statistics(统计数据) say you probably like your teacher. You probably also have a good relationship with your classmates.Caring, outgoing, and cheerful people usually sit in the middle. They are normally serious about learning and feel disappointed with low grades on tests and exams.

    (5) Students who sit here usually want to discuss things with the teacher and are often very interested in the subject. They want to be in the best place to see and hear everything the teacher does and says. The only problem with sitting here is that it can be difficult to see and hear what other students do and say in class.

So, if you really want to hear what everyone says in class, choose a different place to sit.

A.You probably sit right at the front of the class if you're longing for knowledge.

B.Research suggests that the seat you choose in the classroom says a lot about you and your personality.

C.Do you sit in the middle of the classroom?

D.This means it's a good idea to sit in a different place every day.

E.People often think that students who sit at the back are lazy.

F.Students who sit at the side of the classroom are normally interested in class.

I am Canadian. I started learning French when I was 10 years old. But my whole experience with the language was in the classroom. All of that changed, however, during my last summer of high school. As a 17﹣year﹣old girl, I flew across the country by myself for the first time! I headed for Quebec to live in the province with a French﹣speaking host family, who didn't speak any English. And I would learn French at a local school.

On the first day of school, all of us students were given a test to determine(测定)our language level. We were required to speak only French all summer.

I made every effort to communicate in a second language by making new friends, seeing movies and even ordering food from restaurants in French. Though I couldn't understand most of it at the very beginning, the whole experience was exciting and refreshing.

On weekends, my classmates and I took trips to different places around the province. On one trip, we went whale watching on the St. Lawrence River. Even though it was raining, we could see huge whales swimming around our boat. The most memorable part of our trip was a visit to historic Quebec City. I walked along the stone streets, took pictures of the European﹣style(欧式的)buildings, and learned some stories there.

Finally my efforts paid off! At the end of the summer, I was able to communicate pretty well. I couldn't wait to go back to school and talk with my French teacher. Being fully immersed(沉浸)in a French﹣speaking environment was a valuable learning experience. And it could be the main reason for my improvement in French.
