Everybody has a brain, but not many people know how the brain works. Some people believe that the brain is like the hard disk of a computer. We use it to store files 一 pictures, language (words, texts, sounds) and so on.Others compare the brain to a huge cupboard with lots of shelves and boxes in it.We put information into these boxes and hope to find it again later.

The brain is not a computer disk, and it isn't a cupboard.Look at the picture here.It looks a hit like weeds(杂草)in a garden, doesn't it?The picture actually shows a child's neocortex— a part of the brain that controls sight and hearing. You can guess what happens 一 more "weeds" grow as the child gets older.Scientists call these neuronal(神经元的)networks. The networks grow around our neurons. What makes them grow?"Learning!Learning is brain change, "says Professor James Zull from Case Western University in Cleveland,Ohio,USA. "Without learning, nothing changes in the brain. For every new word you learn in your English lesson, every problem you solve in maths, every new song you learn to sing,a neuronal network grows in your brain and the brain changes."

The more neuronal networks we grow, the better we can think and the better we remember. You may wonder if there is anything you can do to make the networks in your brain grow better.Professor Zull says yes, there is.He says that brain change is strongest when a) you are interested in and like what you are learning,b) you are in control of what you learn and c) you get challenging tasks that make you think hard.Understanding a challenging task makes you feel good and develops your brain.

(1)What's the main idea of the first paragraph?

A.The brain — a fantastic computer.

B.What people believe about the brain.

C.How to make your brain stronger.

D.Our brain 一 a growing system.

(2)What can we learn from the passage?

A.Learning makes our neuronal networks grow.

B.Seeing a challenging task develops our brain.

C We remember better when things are easy.

D.There's nothing we can do to make us smarter.

Do you get lots of reading tasks as part of your homework? You might wish that you could read faster. There are some people who say that you can learn to read at super﹣high speeds. But experts disagree on this idea.

"Speed reading is not actually possible," said Elizabeth Schotter,a scientist at the University of South Florida, US. Schotter pointed out that people who say that they can teach others how to speed read are usually doing it to make money by selling courses and books.

In fact, speed reading has been made known to people since 1959, when US educator Evelyn Wood introduced a speed reading program. Several US presidents have even asked their officers to take speed reading courses. However, there is no real science behind speed reading.

Schotter explained that reading is a task difficult to finish. It includes four steps: seeing a word, getting back its meaning from your memory, connecting it to other words in the same sentence, and then moving on to the next word. This process uses many parts of the brain at one time. It can't be sped up.

Some people who say they are able to speed read are simply skimming. Skimming involves reading a passage quickly and only looking for certain words or sentences.

Skimmers can figure out the main idea of a passage﹣especially if it's a topic they're familiar with﹣﹣but they will not be able to remember all the pieces of information.

So is there a way to become a faster reader? Research suggests that you should try to improve the number of your words and simply read more.

(1)According to Schotter, which of the following is TRUE?

A. It's good for students to read at super high speeds.

B. Speed reading courses are supported by real science.

C. Reading includes four steps,it's not easy to finish.

D. Speed reading courses and books are useful for us.

(2)What can we know from Paragraph 5?

A. Skimmers will not forget all the pieces of information.

B. You must read the passage carefully when you are skimming it.

C. Skimming focuses on all the words or sentences of a passage.

D. By skimming, skimmers may find the main idea of a passage.

(3)According to this passage, how to read faster?

A. Learn more words and read more.

B. Taking speed reading courses can help.

C. Read more books about speed reading.

D. See the words at super﹣high speeds.

It is nearly impossible to answer the question when or where baseball started. Several cultures created games which involve(涉及) hitting a ball with a bat and running. But there were several rules that made them quite different from each other. The game of baseball itself has improved over time and has several changes from its early version(版本).

When did baseball start in the US? As the legend goes, the game we know as baseball today was invented or at least built with an accepted set of rules by Alexander Joy Cartwright. As there is little proof(证据) that baseball was played in the United States before Alexander Joy Cartwright wrote up the rules of baseball, it has been formally accepted that Cartwright is, if not the biological, the most suitable father of baseball.

The legend further goes that baseball, which has grown to become a hugely popular game in the United States today, was invented in a famous Manhattan based club called the Knickerbockers. So the name for the rules set by Alexander Joy Cartwright was then called "the Knickerbockers Rules". The first New York baseball team was called the New York Knickerbockers. Having created the rules, Cartwright was naturally the judge (裁判) for the first ever baseball game played in the United States base on the rules.

Who traveled to California during California Golf Rush, spread the knowledge of baseball pretty much at every stop on his way from New York to California.

Till about the late 1860 s, baseball was largely an amateur game until a Cincinnati club﹣the Cincinnati Red Stockings, which is known to almost all Americans﹣decided to recruit(招募) the best players for prize money. The first professional baseball league in the United States was the National Association of Professional Baseball Players, which was set up in 1871.

Justice and Nathaniel are in sixth grade. They go to a middle school named Northwest School of the Arts. They used to go to Winterfield Elementary School. Winterfield has a program with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (CSO). The CSO program teaches kids how to play musical instruments. Justice learned to play the violin. Would you like to improve yourself? Would you like to be a better person? Good news! Here we've got some tips for you.

    Tip 1Be Kind

Remember to be kind to yourself. You can do simple things to take care of yourself, like getting enough sleep to make yourself energetic. If you don't do like that, you will not bring anything good to anyone else. When you decide to show more kindness to yourself and to others, life changes quickly in a better way.

    Tip 2Be Encouraging

It's amazing what a kind word or touch can do. When I was a kid, I went to a lot of schools. It always made me scared, and I was very nervous and unsure of myself. One time, a teacher touched my head and said, smiling, "Don't worry﹣you'll have a good time with us in this classroom." I still remember my teacher's words.

All of us may come across some trouble in our life, and a bit of encouragement can be remembered for years.

    Tip 3

When my sister and I were kids, my mum didn't have a car and our school was a 30﹣minute walk. Our neighbor offered to drive us to school when she dropped her son off, and that saved my mother a lot of time. Giving help to others can bring you happiness.

When thinking about how to become a better person, remember that small changes are also important. But "be kind to yourself" comes first. As the old saying goes, "You can't pour from an empty cup." So in order to be a person who can give more love to this world, you have to fall in love with yourself first.

(2)What can be the best title for Tip 3?

A.Be Helpful

B.Be Polite

C.Be Outgoing

D.Be Honest

A.To encourage others, smile to them often

B.To become a better person, start with small changes

C.To give more love to the world, be kind to yourself first

D.To make friends with neighbors, drive their kids to school
