Learning a new language is hard. In recent research, scientists found that your
chances of reaching fluency(流利) in a new language drop off at the age of 10. Does that mean you should give up your French class if you are older than 10? No!
The research found that it's "nearly impossible" to reach fluency if you start learning a language after age 10. That's not because your language sills start to get worse. "You're still learning fast," says Joshua. "It's just because your ability to learn starts dropping at around 10 or 11 years old."
The researchers say people who try to learn a new language after 10 may still become quite good. But they will probably not become fluent. Kids may better than adults at learning new languages for many reasons. One is that children's brains are more adaptable(能适应的) than adults' brains. This means they are better able to change. In the past, I thought I was terrible at many things, such as math, French and science. Although I was good at drawing, I wasn't the best in my art class.I wanted to find out who I was, what I liked and how I could do it better. So, that winter,I took a notebook and kept my diary. When I filled that notebook,I started another one, and then another.
Keeping a diary helps a lot. Studies have shown that people who keep a diary sleep and feel better. It helps people remember what once happened such as dreams, friendships and happiness. Writing about bad feelings can also help brains get over themand move on. Personally, I learn better about myself and my relationships with others by keeping a diary. For example, when I am fighting with my dad, I'll try writing from his point and it works! If I want to compare myself with my classmates.I'll write something like,"I might not have clear skin, but I like my eyes."
Right about now, you might be thinking: it sounds great, but I'm not a good writer; or I'd love to keep a diary, but my handwriting is terrible. Don't worry! Keeping a diary is not like doing your homework ﹣there are no rules, so do whatever feels best.

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb believed that every failure was a step towards success. He once said, "If I find 10,000 ways something won't work,I haven't failed.I am not discouraged, because every wrong try is another step forward.
Sometimes, their success was a surprise, even to themselves. The famous scientist Alexander Fleming said, "When I woke up just after daybreak on 28th September,1928,I certainly didn't plan to revolutionize(变革) all medicine by discovering the world's' first antibiotic(抗生素).But I guess that was exactly what I did.
Some people only became successful after their deaths. Not like Pablo Picasso who became famous and very rich during his lifetime, the artist Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting all through his life and that was to a friend. But he kept painting and he painted more than 2,000 artworks in the following ten years. Now his paintings are very popular and they sell for millions of pounds.

Have you ever paid for educational podcasts (播客) or live videos? Ask some people and most of them will say yes. "Pay﹣for﹣knowledge" has been more and more fashionable these years. The contents of these "pay﹣for﹣ knowledge" products are from language learning to gardening or baby﹣caring. Everything you think of can be found online at this moment. "Pay﹣for﹣knowledge" is on the rise (兴起).
Why is "pay﹣for﹣knowledge" industry developing so rapidly? First, its development is based on the Internet. With a fast network and a smartphone, anyone who has passed the identity (身份)check can be an online teacher, and anyone with an online account can buy "pay﹣for knowledge" products that he or she wants at an affordable price. Second, people are afraid to miss any information. On one hand, people hope for more useful information. On the other hand, such information is usually at the hands of experts (专家) who serve well﹣known companies and universities. Moreover, the need to learn new skills in today's job market also pushes people to learn on such educational podcasts.
The industry of "pay﹣for﹣knowledge" has proved to be lucrative. It promises possibilities of turning information into money. It is good for the development of our country and it can help sellers make lots of money. Besides, buyers can enjoy self﹣growth from it.What's more, this is a reflection (反映) of respect for knowledge and talents.
However, the rapid development of "pay﹣for knowledge" has a few problems. For one thing, the market is full of eye﹣ catching words such as "How to be an Industry's Expert in 5 Hours" and "15 Classes to Be a Master of Appreciating (欣赏) Classical Music", which sound like if you pay for it, you are sure to succeed. For another, a large number of customers buy them just for showing off. In fact, those who have really had self﹣growth after buying online courses may be the kind of people who need them least. In other words, with or without these courses, they can make it anyway, because they are those who have the ability to learn by themselves.
In general, the best is the one that suits you most."Pay﹣ for﹣knowledge" may be used as a good start for self﹣ growth. Be careful! Otherwise, your dream of success may not come true.

For years, psychologists(心理学家) have been against giving children prizes or money for their performance in school."Outwards"prizes, they say,can undermine the joy of learning for its own good and can even lead to cheating.
But many economists(经济学家) and business people disagree, and their opinions often become popular in the educational market place.Prize programs that pay students are underway in many cities. In some places, students can bring home hundreds of dollars for, say, taking an Advanced Placement course and having high grades in the exams.
"Whether such efforts work continues to be a debate(争议),"said Barbara Marian,an assistant professor of education at Pennsylvania State. She is against using prizes as encouragement.Among parents,it often leads to very hot discussion. And in public education,a new focus on school reform(改革) pushes researchers on both sides of the debate to make more efforts to get data(数据) that may provide information on when and whether prizes work.
"We have to get beyond our biases(偏见),"said Roland Fryer, aneconomist at Harvard University who is planning and testing several prizeprograms."Luckily, the scientific method allows us to examine most ofthose biases and let the data do the talking."In the cash programs being studied,Roland Fryer and other economists compare the schoolperformance of groups of students who are paid and students who arenot. In the study, they find that the students who are prized get highergrades on the SAT and go to better colleges than those who are not.
However, many psychologists believe that early data can be one﹣sided.Research suggests that prizes may work in the short term but havebad influences in the long term.
"Are they highly interested in what they are doing?Or does it feel like hard work? The same prize program might have different influences ondifferent kinds of students,"said Kirabo Jackson,a famous psychologist at Cornell University."The higher the prize is,the more harmful the result might be."

Yang Yu, 14, of Jilin, hasn't adapted (适应) himself to the changes in his classroom since the first day of this term: teachers now hold classes with a computer and screen. "Instead of writing on the blackboard as before, they click the mouse and show us the Power Point (PPT) slides (幻灯片) on the screen. Sometimes, there is not even one word on the blackboard after a whole class," Yang said. "I'm not quite used to the multimedia (多媒体) class."
More and more middle schools in China now use multimedia in class. Teachers put their courses on a computer and show their lessons with a PPT. To make the lessons more interesting, they play animations (动画) and movies.
Hu Wei, an English teacher in Sichuan, thinks multimedia class seems to be more interesting than traditional classes. His students practice their oral English by following music and animations on a computer. "It helps them speak English bravely and actively," Hu says. "Besides, it's also a helpful tool for teachers because showing PPTs saves us more time than writing notes on the blackboard."
However, multimedia class makes things more difficult for students like Liu Yifang, a 15﹣year﹣old Beijinger. She can't take all her notes as before. "There are no words on the blackboard, but many on the screen," Liu says. "Besides, my teacher speaks so fast that I can't catch up."
Liu thinks it is not the best way to learn. "For me, I like the old way. I agree that the multimedia is helpful, but so is the blackboard," Liu says. "If teachers can use both tools properly in class, I think that will be really good for everyone."

If the United Kingdom wants to remain competitive in the world, we do need far more of our young people leaving school with a good commandof Mandarin Chinese," Miller added. Some parents are used to doing almost everything for their children. They see their older children as babies all the time! It can be a very common problem in China, because most parents only have one child in China. Some parents care so much about the safety of their children that they are afraid to let them go anywhere or do anything by themselves. So their children fail to learn social skills and become more dependent(依赖的)on them!
In fact, no children really enjoy being looked after by their parents all the time. No parents would be happy knowing that. Because of too much care, their children don't know anything about the world. Children need their own time to grow into adults and to learn how to deal with problems. Too much care damages their fun when they are growing up. And when suddenly they can't depend on their parents, these children will be in a big trouble!
It's nice that parents show their care to their children. It's nice that children know that their parents' care is out of love. And it will be nicer if the children let their parents know how much love they really need and how much love is too much.
