In the summer between my first year and second year in college,I was invited to be an instructor (辅导员)at a high school camp.On the first day, when we were dancing and playing games,I noticed a boy under the tree who was small and thin. His shyness made him appear weak.I walked towards him, introduced myself and invited him to join in the activities and meet some new people. He quietly replied,"No,I really don't want to do this."I could understand that he was in a new world but I knew it wouldn't be right to force him, either.Actually, the boy didn't need a close talk but a friend.

China was once known as the "Bicycle Kingdom". Now, a young US man, David Wang, living in Beijing is using pieces of bamboo to replace(代替)parts of bicycles.

Two years ago, David opened the Bamboo Bicycle Beijing workshop in Langjia hutong. They cut and shape bamboo into bicycle frames(构架). After connecting the pieces with special glue, they join wheels and other parts together.

After graduating from university, David came to China to continue his study. He has lived in China for more than 6 years and loves the city's ancient hutongs. Some people seem to have unusual memories. Zheng Aiqiang, a "memory athlete" on TV show Super Brain, can remember 2, 660 numbers in just one hour!

You would think people like him must have special brains. But according to a recent study by researchers from America and Holland, the brain structure (结构) of ordinary people and 23 of the world's lending memory athletes shows no difference.

Good memories can be trained. New research in the magazine Neuron suggests that a person will get a super memory with just six weeks of hard training.

Researchers found that a technique (技巧) called loci, invented by the ancient Greeks, can greatly help improve memory.

By using loci, you are using your imagination to improve the brain's memory networks. You can link (关联) something you need to remember with a place that you know very well. For example, to remember a list of numbers, imagine yourself walking through your house. Each thing is linked to a number. For example, zero could be the handle on the door and five could be the painting on the wall.

In one study, some ordinary people were given 20 minutes to remember 72 nouns. At the beginning, they could only remember 26 words, but when they were taught loci, they could remember 62 words.

"Not everyone can become a memory winner. But everyone using the technique can improve his memory greatly" said Boris Konrad, one of the researchers in the study.

"You are first﹣rate at skating, and flying a kite, and playing at ball and marbles, are you not?"

"And was it indeed you, father?" asked his son, eagerly looking up into the face of his kind parent.

"Yes,my child. That dull boy was your own father in his early years."

"Then I will try again." said George,in a decided tone;and, flinging aside his half﹣made kite,he turned and re﹣entered the house, and was soon bending in earnest attention over his lesson.

"Did you find it hard work?"

"Not so very hard, after I had once made up my mind that I would learn it.Indeed I never stopped to think,as I usually do,but went right on until I had mastered every sentence."
