C
To be able to motivate oneself, or self-motivate, occurs when a person has the willingness to do something and is internally(内在地) motivated to do it.
Sometimes it’s very difficult to get ourselves moving. The natural tendency is to postpone.Life just seems to get in the way! There is a job to go to, groceries to do, television to watch—whoops! I guess we get pretty good at finding excuses to escape getting started on goals like an exercise routine or reading a new book. The fact is that we are creatures of routine and habit. So what can we do to motivate ourselves to accomplish our goals?
Here are some tips on how to get moving:
Decide what you want. It’s hard to motivate an aimless mind.Set a goal and decide how you are going to go about it.Then break it down into smaller sections so it’s easier to handle and less overwhelming.(势不可挡)
Keep track of your progress.Keep a log or journal where you can measure how much you have accomplished.Looking at it can also motivate you to keep pushing ahead.
Post motivating pictures or slogans within your sight. It is always inspiring to see pictures of people who have accomplished what you’re going for.It makes it attainable and realistic.Likewise, little slogans like “go for it” or “just do it” can give you the little support you need.
Sometimes we forget what we set out to do and a little reminder is all we need to be revitalized (激活) and focus on the end result. If you remind yourself to go for the desired promotion, it will re-establish why you are doing what you’re doing.
Make it a habit.Once you have accomplished your objective, e.g.becoming an early riser, keep it up so that it’s second nature to you and you don’t have to think about it anymore.
64.According to the author, some people fail to achieve their goals because ________.
A.they don’t have enough desire
B.their life is filled with routine work
C.they benefit from the force of habit
D.they naturally put off forming new habits
65.It can be inferred from the underlined sentence that ________.
A.self-motivation needs repeated self-reminding of one’s goal
B.in modern society people tend to become forgetful
C.when we forget our goal, our life becomes meaningless
D.we can achieve our goal only by focusing on the end result
66.To get moving on your goal, you can do the following EXCEPT ________.
A.keep a diary to clearly judge your distance to your goal
B.make self-improvement your second nature
C.forget your aim and revitalize yourself with slogans
D.support yourself by hanging inspiring pictures in your house
67.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Set Goals in Your Life                         B.Get Yourself Motivated
C.Get into Good Habits                           D.Do Not Postpone

Spanish men will have to learn to change diapers and do dishwashing under the terms of a new law designed to strike a blow.
The law, due to be passed this month, is likely to cause a revolution in family affairs in a country where 40% of men reportedly don’t do housework at all. It will oblige men to “share domestic responsibilities and the care and attention” of children and elderly family members, according to the draft approved by the Spanish parliament’s justice commission.
“This will be a good way of reminding people what their duties are. It is something feminists (女权主义者) have been wanting for a long time,” said Margarita Uria, of the Basque Nationalist Party, who was behind what is an amendment to a new divorce law.
Failure to meet the obligations will be taken into consideration by judges when determining the terms of divorces. Men who refuse to do their part may be given less frequent contact with their children.
Spanish women spend five times longer on housework than husbands. Even when both have jobs outside the home, Spanish women still do three times as much work in the house.
“It is not just about housework, though,” said Ms. Uria.
A study five years ago by Spain’s Center for Sociological Investigation concluded that fathers spent an average of 13 minutes each day looking after their children.
Only 19 % of Spanish men thought it was right for mothers of school-age children to have a full-time job. More than a third thought mothers should not work outside the home at all.
The Change to the Spanish legal code will see domestic obligations added to a list of marital(婚姻的) duties that currently includes fidelity, living together and helping one another.
That should guarantee that, when the law—which will also make divorce proceedings faster and easier—is voted on in parliament in the next few weeks, the obligation to share domestic chores will be added to the statute books.
What is the percentage of Spanish men who don’t do any housework?

A.19% B.40% C.60% D.80%

About the new law, which of the following is NOT true?

A.Men are obliged to do housework.
B.Men will have to take care of children.
C.Women have to have full-time jobs.
D.Men will have to take care of the elderly.

According to the fourth paragraph, which of the following is TRUE?

A.If a man fails to fulfill the obligation, he will get a divorce.
B.If a man fails to fulfill the obligation, he will be thrown to the jail.
C.If a man fails to fulfill the obligation, he will be in an unfavorable condition in a divorce.
D.If a man fails to fulfill the obligation, he will not be allowed to see the child any more.

What is the general topic of the passage?

A.Spain will pass a new law to oblige men to share domestic responsibilities.
B.Men have to share more domestic responsibilities.
C.There will be a revolution by provoked (被激怒的) feminists.
D.Marital laws in Spain are not enough yet.

When you think of the tremendous technological progress we have made, it’s amazing how little we have developed in other respects. We may speak scornfully of the poor old Romans because they enjoyed the seemingly excited killing that went on in their arenas(竞技场). We may despise them because they mistook these goings on for entertainment. We may forgive them because they lived 2000 years ago and obviously knew no better. But are our feelings of superiority(优越)really justified? Are we any less blood-thirsty? Why do boxing matches, for instance, attract such universal interest? Don’t the audience who attend them hope they will see some violence? Human beings remain as bloodthirsty as ever they were. The only difference between ourselves and the Romans is that while they were honest enough to admit that they enjoyed watching hungry lions tearing people apart and eating them alive, we find all sorts of arguments to defend sports which should have been banned long ago.
It really is incredible that in this day and age we should still allow hunting or bull-fighting, that we should be prepared to sit back and watch two men punch each other in a boxing ring, that we should be relatively unmoved by the sight of one or a number of racing cars crashing and bursting into flames. Any talk of ‘the sporting spirit’ is merely hypocrisy(虚伪). People take part in violent sports because of the high rewards they bring. Audience are willing to pay vast sums of money to see violence. A world heavyweight championship match, for instance, is front page news. Millions of people are disappointed if a big fight is over in two rounds instead of fifteen. They feel disappointment because they haven’t experienced the exquisite pleasure of witnessing continuous violence.
Why should we ban violent sports if people enjoy them so much? You may well ask. The answer is simple: they are uncivilized. For centuries man has been trying to improve himself spiritually and emotionally—though with little success. But at least we no longer tolerate the sight madmen imprisoned in cages, or public punishment of any of the countless other barbarous (野蛮的) practices which were common in the past. Prisons are no longer the harsh forbidding places they used to be. Social welfare systems are in operation in many parts of the world. Big efforts are being made to distribute wealth fairly. These changes have come about not because human beings have suddenly improved, but because positive steps were taken to change the law. The law is the biggest instrument of social change that we have and it may exert great civilizing influence. If we banned dangerous and violent sports, we would be moving one step further to improving mankind. We would recognize that violence is unworthy of human beings.
It can be inferred from the passage that the author’s opinion of nowadays’ human beings is ________________

A.not very high. B.high. C.scornful. D.neutral

Why does the author mention the old Romans in this article?

A.To reveal that the old Romans first started violent sports.
B.To prove that the old Romans were not civilized.
C.To show human beings in the past knew nothing better.
D.To indicate human beings today are as bloodthirsty as the old Romans.

How many dangerous sports does the author mention in this passage?

A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six.

What does the author want to illustrate in this article?

A. By banning the violent sports, we human beings can improve ourselves.
B. By banning the dangerous sports, we can improve the law.
C. We must take positive steps to improve social welfare system.
D. Law is the main instrument of social change.

I found myself at a checkout counter behind an elderly woman seemingly in no hurry as she paid for her groceries. A. PhD. student with not a lot of money, I had hurried into the store to pick up some flowers. I was in a huge rush, thinking of my upcoming evening. I did not want to be late for this date.
We were in Boston, a place not always known for small conversation between strangers. The woman stopped unloading her basket and looked up at me. She smiled. It was a nice smile----warm and reassuring—and I retuned her gift by smiling back.
“Must be a special lady,” whoever it is that will be getting those beautiful flowers,” she said.
“Yes, she’s special,” I said, and then to my embarrassment, the words kept coming out. “It’s only our second date, but somehow I am just having the feeling she’s ‘the one.’ ”Jokingly, I added, “The only problem is that I can’t figure out why she’d want to date a guy like me.”
“Well, I think she’s very lucky to have a boyfriend who brings her such lovely flowers and who is obviously in love with her,” the woman said. “My husband used to bring me flowers every week-even when times were tough and we didn’t have much money. Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming lake behind his house.
In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out the back door, leaving behind his shoes, socks, and shirt as he went. He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swan toward the middle of the lake, an alligator(鳄鱼) was swimming toward the shore.
His mother in the house was looking out the window and saw the two as they got closer and closer. In extreme fear, she ran toward the water, yelling(大叫) to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him.
From the dock(码头),the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched(夺取) his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-water(拔河). What time is it? Most people are pretty accurate in their answer. And if you don’t know for sure, it’s very likely that you can find out. There may be a watch on your wrist; there may be a clock on the wall, desk, or computer screen; or maybe you’re riding in a car that has a clock in the dash hoard (仪表板) .
Even if you don’t have a timepiece of some sort nearby, your body keeps its own beat. Humans have an internal clock that regulates (调节) the beating of our heart, the peace of our breathing, the discharge (排出) of chemicals within our bloodstream, and many other bodily functions.
Time is something from which we can’t escape. Even if we ignore it, it’s still going by, ticking away, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour. So the main issue in using your time well is, “who’s in charge?” We can allow time to slip by and let it be our enemy. Or we can take control of it and make it our ally.
By taking control of how you spend your time, you’ll increase your chances of becoming a more successful student. Perhaps more importantly, the better you are at managing the time you devote to your studies, the more time you will have to spend on your outside interests.
The aim of time management is not to schedule every moment so we become slaves of a timetable that governs every waking moment of the day. Instead, the aim is to permit us to make informed choices as to how we use our time. Rather than letting the day go by, largely without our awareness, what we are going to discuss next can make us better able to control time for our own purposes.
The underlined word “ally” in Para.3 most likely means someboby or something that is____________.

A.your slave and serves you
B.your supporter an helps you
C.under your control and obeys you
D.under your influence and follows you

The author intends to tell us that time __________.

A.could be regulated by a timepiece such as a clock or a watch
B.could be managed by the internal clock by human bodies
C.should be well managed for our own interest
D.should be saved for outside interests

In the next part, the author would most probably discuss with you ________.

A.how to keep up with the times
B.how to make up for lost time
C.how to have a good time
D.how to make good use of time

My father was 44 and knew he wasn’t going to make it to 45. He wrote me a letter and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life.
Since the day I was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. Only part always times out. “Right now, you are pretending to be a time-killer. But I know that one day, you will do something great that will set you among the very best.” Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me permission to believe in myself. “You will do something great.” He didn’t know what that would be, and neither did I, but at times in my life when I’ve felt proud of myself, I remember his words and wish he were here so I could ask. “Is this what you were talking about, Dad? Should I keep going?”
A long way from 12 now, I realize he would have been proud when I made any progress. Lately, though , I’ve come to believe he’d want me to move on to what comes next: to be proud of, and believe in, somebody else. It’s time to start writing my own letters to my children. Our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had. Our kids don’t hold back because they’re afraid to fail. They’re only afraid of failing us. They don’t worry about being disappointed. Their fear-as mine was until my father’s letter-is of being a disappointment.
Give your children permission to succeed. They’re writing for you to believe in them. I always knew my parents loved me. But trust me. That belief will be more complete, that love will be more real, and their belief in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts; “Don’t worry; you’ll do something great.” Not having that blessing from their parents may be the only thing holding them back.
We learn from the text that the author _________

A.lost his father when he was young
B.Worked hard before he read his father's letter
C.Asked his father's permission to believe in himself
D.Knew exactly what great thing his father wanted him to do

What does the author tell us in the 3rd paragraph?

A.Children need their parents’ letters.
B.Children are afraid to be disappointed.
C.His children’s fear of failure held them back.
D.His father’s letter removed his fear of failing his parents.

Which of the following is true of the author?

A.He got no access to success. B.He wrote back to his father at 12.
C.He was sure his parents loved him. D.He once asked his father about the letter.

The main purpose of the text is to _______.

A.describe children’s thinking B.answer some questions children have
C.stress the importance of communication D.advise parents to encourage their children

This is the age of being busy. Many of us live in busy places and have busy lives. Even the roads are busy as we try to get from here to there. Adults are busy going to jobs and taking care of their families. Kids are busy, too, going to school and doing a lot of homework after school and on weekends.
Busy isn’t bad, necessarily. If you are not busy enough you might be bored. But if you are too busy, you might break down. For example, if you have a soccer game that runs late on a school night and you haven’t eaten dinner or done your homework, that’s a not-so-fun kind of busy. We wanted to know what kids thought, so we did a kidsPoll about being busy with 882girls and boys aged 9 to 13.
Almost all of them said they felt stressed because they were too busy. About half said they felt this way once in a while or some of the time. But 17% said they felt this way most of the time and 24% said they felt this all the time! Oh dear, that’s no fun.
Only 4% of kids said they wanted less free time and 18% said they already had just the right amount. But, no big surprise, 61% of kids wish they had a lot more free time. If they had more time, most would spend it hanging out or playing with friends.
Often, adults plan large parts of a kid ’s day, especially during the school year. kids can’t tell their parents they’ll be skipping school(逃学) today to get more free time! But they can tell their parents they’d like to play a game or read a book during their free time instead of watching TV.
The purpose of the first paragraph is to _____.

A.Introduce the topic
B.Support the main idea
C.Raise the topic sentence
D.Attract the readers’ attention

By giving the example of a late soccer game, the writer intends to tell us______.

A.Being too busy is bad for the kids
B.It is no fun to be busy for the kids
C.Homework should go before gam.
D.Being busy may cause the kids to feel bored

According to the passage, the KidsPoll is done to carry out research on _____.

A.How kids arrange their free time
B.What kids think of being busy
C.How many kids felt stressed
D.What kids do with their study

From the passage, we can infer that the writer agrees kids can_____.

A.Spend their free time hanging or playing out
B.Get a lot more free time from their parents
C.Have a right amount of free time with permission
D.Get more free time from school work sometimes

When you put down your pens at the end of the college entrance exam, 12 hard years of study will have come to an end. Forget your studies for a while. It's time to enjoy yourselves!
There are many ways to celebrate this special month of graduation. You can have photos taken with your classmates and teachers, or dine out together and exchange gifts.
High school students in Western countries such as the United States and Canada usually have a prom to mark their graduation. It's to mark the time kids turn into young men and women. After the prom, teenagers either go to college or find a job. It means they are no longer as dependent on their parents as they were before.
At the prom, boys usually dress in dinner jackets and bow ties, though many different types of formal clothes are worn. Traditionally, girls give boys matching boutonnieres (a small collection of flowers they pin to their jackets). Girls traditionally wear formal dresses, or dress to shock or be noticed, in shiny or brightly colored materials.
Common prom activities include dining, dancing, the crowning (加冠) of a prom king and queen, and just talking to friends. In some cases, high school students collect funds for their class prom through the four years of their high school.
High schools in or near large cities may rent ballrooms at expensive hotels or, to be unusual, on a pleasure cruise boat.
But often costs are cut by simply using the school gym. Students make a lot of effort to decorate the gym to make the event special. The music played at the prom will be the most popular kinds, like rock and hip-hop.
The students elect the Prom Queen. She is partnered with a Prom King who is elected similarly. These are great honors that the pair takes very seriously. The two dance with each other to celebrate their election.
Sometimes teachers and parents also go to the prom. But others like to go with friends, to whom they are soon going to be saying goodbye.

Will it matter if you don't have your breakfast? A short time ago, a test was given in the United States. People of different ages, from 12 to 83, were asked to have a test. During the test, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Scientists wanted to see how well their bodies worked when they had different kinds of breakfasts.
The rules show that if a person eats a right breakfast, he or she will work better than if he or she has no breakfast. If a student has fruit , eggs, bread and milk before going to school ,he or she will learn more quickly and listen more carefully in class.
The result is opposite to what some people think. Having no breakfast will not help them lose weight. This is because they are so hungry at noon that eat too much for lunch. They will gain weight instead of losing it. You will lose weight if you reduce your other meals.
