At his bedside, I joked with him, saying        , "Today is Valentine's Day, don’t you want to send Mother a present?" He became more         when I handed him the old        . He carefully opened it and took out the card, and when he         it, his eyes were filled with tears.

One night, when I was eight, my mother gently asked me a question I would never forget. “Sweetie, my company wants to        me but needs me to work in Brazil. This is like your teacher telling that you’ve done             and allowing you to skip a grade(跳级), but you’ll have to          your friends. Would you say yes to your teacher?” She gave me a hug and asked me to think about it. I was puzzled. The question kept me         for the rest of the night. I had said “yes” but for the first time, I realized the          decisions adults had to make.
For almost four years, my mother would call us from Brazil every day. Every evening I’d         wait for the phone to ring and then tell her every detail of my day. A phone call, however, could never replace her           and it was difficult not to feel lonely at times.
During my fourth-grade Christmas break, we flew to Rio to visit her. Looking at her large          apartment, I became        how lonely my mother must have been in Brazil herself. It was then          I started to appreciate the tough choices she had to make on         family and work.              difficult decisions, she used to tell me, you wouldn’t know whether you make the right choice, but you could always make the best out of the situation, with passion and a           attitude.
Back home, I           myself that what my mother could do, I could, too. If she           to live in Rio all by herself, I, too, could learn to be           . I learn how to take care of myself and set high but achievable         .
My mother is now back with us. But I will never forget what the        has really taught me. Sacrifices        in the end. The separation between us has proved to be        for me.

Tears clouded my eyes as I stood in our washing room, holding Brett's jeans and shirt full of burn holes. Tired and defeated, I         to the floor. The clothes were just one more thing Brett had         . He often got almost everything in the house out of        . Many windows in our house needed repair due to his breaking           to steal money when he chose to live on the street. Yet none of this could compare to the emotional          Brett had done to our once quiet home.
Brett came to live with us when he was 12 years old. During the next few years I had dealt with Brett as          as possible, but inside I was shouting,"I don't want him in my house another day, Lord! I just can't          him!" Having wiped my tears, I continued        him as before.
When Brett was nearly 18, he landed again in Juvenile Hall(少管所). After that, my husband and I had to send Brett to a boarding school for helping          teens.
At the         ceremony, each graduate held a white rose to give to the person who had         the most to him or her.
Brett spoke           to his parents and then spoke to me, "You did so much. You were always there, no matter           happened. My mom and dad, I was their kid. But you,           troubled enough by me, always           me such love. And I want you to k      I love you for it."
, I stood as Brett placed the white rose in my hand and hugged me          .

Love is action. We may not always have positive feelings about certain people in our lives, but we can love them.

This is my third story. When I was seventeen, I   36   a quote (引文) that went something like, " If you live each day  37   it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." Since then, for the past thirty-three years, I've looked  38   the mirror every morning and asked myself, "If today were the last day of my life, what would I do ?" And when there was no answer for too many days in a   39  , I know I need to change something.

This was the closest I've been to facing  47   , and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades.Death is the destination we all   48   .No one has ever escaped it.And that is   49   it should be, because death is very likely the single   50   invention of life.It clears out the old to make   51   for the new.Your time is limited, so don't waste it living   52   life.Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out ( 盖过) your own inner   53   .And most importantly, have the courage to 54 your heart and intuition (直觉).They 55 already know what you truly want to become.Everything else is secondary.

I could have easily gone through life without getting to know one of the most romantic feelings---love for a dog. For at least ten years my 1   had been suggesting that we get a dog. There were several reasons why the 2   came up. We had noticed that, on our block, couples with no children as a rule 3   one large or two small dogs. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always known that my brother was different. At first I thought this was a  31   thing. But when I got older I learned the truth. My brother had autism (孤独症) and Attention Deficit Disorder (儿童多动症) — serious  32   conditions. At 15, he  33   like a 7-year-old child. When he was little, I didn’t  34   it as much. But as he got older, it became more obvious. When something didn’t go his  35  , he got angry and it took hours to  36   him down. He would talk to himself and play with string. We could never  37   to give him his medicine, otherwise he’d go wild. I was always  38   when we took him anywhere, and I never wanted to bring any of my friends  39   with me.
When I was 10,  I felt like I couldn’t  40   it any more. I’d shout at him for being different and would ask  41   he couldn’t be normal. Of course, he had no  42   what I was talking about. It became very hard,  43   when a friend of mine didn’t want to come over  44   her mom had said my brother was dangerous. Our fights  45   up until one day he came up to me. He gave me a big  46  ,  like he was saying, “I don’t know what I did  47  , but I hope you still love me.” At that moment I realized that I’d better learn to  48   him.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned how  49   I really am. Having him as a brother has made me kinder and more patient. No matter how busy my  50   is, he’ll always listen to my problems. I worry about his future, but I know he’ll always be loved.
